I think the article via the link in OP just abt says it all. As mentioned by timppu & GothikOrk, we learn diff things in diff genres of games so we need play a variety of games fr diff genres 2 improve diff aspects of our cognitive skills.
However, I also wld like 2 emphasise that not all games r created equal. As in we do not learn the same amt compared 2 another game of the same or diff genre. Certain games which I personally feel do not contribute as much 2 increasing our cognitive abilities r those which that do not require us 2 strategize in order 2 complete a game & only need us 2 do either endless repetitive actions. Some examples include those that rely simply on fighting/killing our way thru the game w/o hving 2 worry abt dying or hv quick respawn & those that hv little or no education value other than purely 4 fun sake.
I must also warn early teens of games that promote the wrong values such as brutal acts of killing or doing things against the law & getting away with it. Such mindless killings & perversion 2 justice left unguided by parents of these young kids playing these games will numb their senses & make them think that violence is a way 2 solve problems & robbing/killing is 'OK', thus causing a few regrettable incidents 2 happen in real life. I hv also heard of cases where teens even some adults overplayed games in lan shops due 2 addiction 2 the game & died as a result.
In conclusion, games can hv both gd benefits as well as bad influences 4 the young if left unchecked. I believe such games can still be played but only in moderation & with proper guidance or supervision by adults.

It's possible to be sexist and good at solving puzzles at the same time.

Civilization taught me how to rule the world. Now I just need to put it in practice... and go back to 4000BC to settle a city.

Saying kids are the only audience susceptible to fault is misguided.

edit: to your post below this, yes it clarifies. I'm quite tired at the moment, as I just contracted a slight case of the flu. However, thanks to my apparent breast-feeding when I was a bub, it has just about left me after a day. I've also got to wake up in 10 hours to hit the uni library and source information for a 1500 word essay that I haven't started, but is due in 3 days. I know I'm spouting shit but yea, the point is I appreciate you being constructive with me.

Grim Fandango taught me to place my scythe where my heart used to be(next to Ricky), and remakes usually suck.

Thanks for the link.
Gnostic: In the past I am told video games are bad because of studies, social life, health reason.
Now I am told video games are bad because of sexist, bigotry, discrimination, patriarch reason.
When did we come to the conclusion that video games are good? We've always known that. Everything has bad aspects and good aspects, the difficult trick is judging them realistically and taking the road that's best all around.
This kind of "look, somebody else did a stupid thing so I'm allowed to too" argument is the mainstay of kid culture. And some adults as well. :)
