I'm thinking there's a good chance all Tomb Raider games go on sale this week on steam however I'm wondering whether to go with Tomb Raider Anniversary or purchase an old used copy copy of the original version.

For the record I've never played the original and have briefly played the anniversary demo. Anyone played both and have an opinion on which is better (strictly gameplay wise feedback please)?

Without nostalgia goggles, Tomb Raider Anniversary is way better than the original; no clunky control/grab mechanics, and the camera doesn't actively want to kill you. Definitely a rare example of how a remake significantly improves the original formula.

If you like the anniversary demo, then just stick with it. Or if you insist on playing an old school Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider Chronicles is one of the easier to get (currently on sale for $4.99 on Direct2Drive).

It flatout says chronicles won't work on a 64 bit os (Known issues : Does not work with 64-bit systems). I suppose I have my xp laptop but it doesn't say what kind of drm is associated with it. Heck it doesn't even say it's xp compatible. The requirments are taken straight from the original game box (95/98/me).

Steam also has AI Wars on sale for $9.99 in lue of it's release of the new expansion which is also on sale for a couple of bucks off.

Ah....well, knowing Steam, it will be on sale soon so I can wait.

GMG has their own and - undoubtedly - the worst DRM what you can imagine. You have to reactivate your games every few days.

For what it's worth, they actually 'only' use generic SecuROM on all their games, and quite transparent about it. And so far (I have 17 games on GMG, all free from my first trade-in bonus) I don't see any limited machine/installation activation, so probably you can backup and reinstall as many times as you want (haven't tried to activate the same game on two computers, though). That, and you also don't need the client to play or reactivate your games, so you can get 3 or 4 days of playtime offline, so to speak.

Did you ever figure out which directory they were downloading too so that you could back up?

I only bought Painkiller from them and it never downloaded properly or, if it did, I didn't know where to find it.

Dude, did you try the search function on windows?

Find: Painkiller

If no result, then simply delete the word, go into advanced features and put the date and time you downloaded it (leave a bit of time lee way just in case) and you'll get a big list of ALL files used in that time, and you should find it.

Hmm.....i did do this very thing afterwards and it was nowhere to be found. Thought it was some uber-tastic piracy prevention on Greenman's part to hide the game really really well.
