nmillar: Today's Games for Windows Deal of the Day is apparently going to be S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl for £0.75 / $0.99.
Ah that would be absolutely awesome. Been wanting to give those games a try. I'll nab the one from GG and then get the one from GFWL

metalkidz: Velvet Assassin or Stalker CS, mmmm, maybe i will go for VA, main char looks quite hot lol
Also note that GamersGate's version of Velvet Assassin is DRM free (excluding the need to log in when downloading/installing) and cannot be registered to Steam.

Is that a bad thing?

In my opinion, it's a feature. Of all the games I'd purchased from GG, only one of them recrypts the exe immediately upon the setup.exe starting. However, copy is faster than delete. One other caveat, EA games (specifically The Sims 2/3) use a .hidden directive which hides the files from Gnome/KDE users in Linux (unless they turn on 'view hidden files'. I suspect that's what comes on the EA DVD and GG just dumps it into a directory. Must be that only evil hacker types use Linux, eh?

Just purely out of curiosity, which game is that?

Euhh... It was the STEAM part I was getting at. I'm aware of that neat trick ;) Still good to know what to expect from EA games (since I haven't purchased an EA game from GG). Do you mean the installer does that when you run it through wine? I'm not sure I fully understand...
And those who use Linux are really those who know what's good for them or just those who want to have teh fun back into computing! I'm a total Gentoo nuts... have lost sleepless night just debugging stuff or making a perfect Linux all arounder system. And you never run out of things to do :P

Not for me. But there are people out there who only want their games on Steam.

Thus, it's best that such people know that this version cannot be added to Steam, unlike the retail version.

Aha, the retail version needs to be activated on STEAM? Didn't know that. That makes GG's version all the more special and unique :)

I wouldn't call it a bad thing but for me being able to activate it on steam is an added bonus and that makes it good to know :)

If that's the case, it also likely means there is a feature 'missing' from the GG version that used Steamworks to function. Might be a lack of available DLC, a missing MP mode, etc.

I couldn't find anything about DLCs, MP mode or such things (well, there was a graphic novel it seems if your pre-ordered from GameStop). The STEAM version does not use Steamworks, no achievements, no fancy stuff at all... yeah, I don't know what this is all about. It's weird for sure.

Well, if the retail game required Steam then it used Steamworks for something. What, I have no idea.

No, Steam activation and Steamworks support are two completely different things. For instance the single-player portion of Dark Messiah of Might Magic could either be activated on Steam or installed as is while the Multi-Player portion had to be activated on Steam. But it didn't use Steamworks, I think it didn't even exist yet back then.
If you use the Steamworks API then you're expected to tie in Achievements, Leaderboards, etc... otherwise it wouldn't make any sense.
