Oh, I'm sure in some areas one can land in jail for such things. Same as in some areas one can land in jail for defending themselves in their own home against a perp.

StingingVelvet: Doesn't really matter how real the threats are, they're still heinous and way out of bounds. The devs being jerks does not justify such a reaction in ANY way, and threats like that are indeed illegal and should be.

When they started patronize and disparage (though vaguely) gamers, who were already upset about their deal (and Epic Store policies in general), they essentially issued a provocation. Obviously, I don't approve harrassment period, but I also don't approve people who poke into hornets nest, then start to stir it even more and then complain that they were bitten.

UPD. Though some folks already explained that. Basically, the lesson here - you don't take out fire by pouring gasoline in it, you don't calm outraged mob by patronizing and belittleing them.

I agree people should not be easily offended(I rant about it a lot here and elsewhere), but I don't think one should advocate or brush aside those essentially breaking the law for sh*ts and giggles as some do.

The fact is some take some comments more seriously and constant threats/similar can make a person feel extremely poorly, and to me it's akin to harassment...as such I wouldn't mind if we were allowed to give such people a smack upside the head for making such comments if nothing else.

Also are you now equating self defense against criminals with making threats against other people? One is morally good and justified in most cases(imo) and the other is not.

ariaspi: Probably you misunderstood what I was trying to say and maybe my wording should have been more clear. When I said "These devs deserve the backlash", I was referring to the overall negative reaction, not to the death threats. Of course death threats are not okay, but that is to be expected in today's world - no matter what someone will say, there will be someone else to be offended by it. So I'm indifferent to such threats, and usually the ones that make a fuss about them want to play the victim card (and to be clear, I'm referring to those that start/say something bad/stupid and then cry when it bites them in the ass).

I don't know anything more about this subject than what was said in this thread and the posted conversation. Didn't read OP's article. So, I assume there were a few threats made by some lunatics, or even worse, were made by some people who like to stir up shit to create some internet drama and get some clicks on their articles. Were the threats by the hundreds? I doubt it, but I also don't care because I would not say such stupid things as those devs. I guess some are more chilled, or deal with bigger issues, in some parts of the world and don't take seriously what a nobody says on the internet.

LootHunter: Yes, people shouldn't. That's why as long as this kind of behavior condoned (and even encouraged) towards one group of people, there is no way you can convince that such behavior towards some other group of people is NOT OK.

Did you read the discord? None of this would've happened if these lice tried to imitate humans and said, "sorry, but we need the money", better yet negotiated offmarket DRM-free copies for donors.

It's one of the basic rules of society that cuts across cultures that when someone scams charitable people, you are allowed to be offended on their behalf. In fact, I'd argue scammers' fear of social disapproval is the one thing that allows small charitable initiatives which can't afford the legal overhead to exist.

(One thing I definitely agree on, death threats are bad. Those two should pick a scenic bridge and do a double flip out of their own volition, no one needs to go to jail on their account.)
