shane-o: EDIT: I'm not saying people shouldn't ask for refunds, just see what Frontier says/does first
The problem with waiting is that the wording in their 'contract' with us is not that clear, and if you wait you may well find that on the 16/12/2014 (when the game is released) you might find you can no longer ask for a refund:
Cancellation of an order for a permanent download of a Digital Product

Once a permanent download of a Digital Product has been made available for download by you, the order cannot be cancelled and no refund will be offered.

Each purchase of a permanent download shall be deemed a final, non-exchangeable, non-refundable sale.

You may cancel a pre-order for a Digital Product up to and including the day before the release date of the relevant Digital Product by contacting Customer Services clearly stating your order number and item(s) to be cancelled.

Once you have notified us that you are cancelling your order, any sum debited to us from your credit or debit card or PayPal account will be re-credited to your account as soon as possible and in any event within 30 days of your cancellation.

I don't play MMO's or any games that require online connection during play (i can manage a one time activation connection, but that is about it), my bandwidth limit and being on the end of the local line connection means i'm stuck with very basic internet options. I certainly would not have backed Elite: Dangerous if i had known it was online only.

getlogan: Wow couldn't they have informed us sooner they had no intentions of an offline mode. I guess in their eyes that may be a stupid tactic and they wouldn't have be able to use the funding from backers that wanted offline mode.

This may just be an innocent oversight, but the timing of this news just a few weeks before release makes me skeptical.
...
Yes, smells like a classical bait-and-switch. Buying an onlne game from a publisher that just proved he's untrustworthy (and thus can close its server as soon as the income start dropping) is definitely not something I'll do in the near future.

A shame, though. The prospect of a new Elite had me excited. :(
Looks like the storm is coming^^

"The problem is that the galaxy mechanics all sit on the online servers. The data set and processes are huge and not something that would translate offline without considerable compromise to the vision. Trust me we didn't sit down and think what would annoy people the most! It's a choice we've had to make and so we've taken it"
Are they really using the same excuse as what Maxis used to explain SimCity's always online DRM?

Sorry, I should have explained better. I meant waiting till they can give an official answer/explanation (it's the weekend there)

Actually one guy in the official forum just explained to me that always online is not DRM. It's just online connectivity requirement LOL

Just like EA said with Tiberian Twilight.

There's nothing to wait for though, they've been responding to it from the start of that thread on the official forums.

Basically they said it's not going to happen, because the game they made, the game they intended to make from the start, which basically amounts to an MMO 'directed' from their servers, and thus is incapable of having an offline mode.

They've clearly been set on this path for a long time already given they're this close to release, so the biggest questions here are A) Why have they stated clearly and without doubts in the past that they would have an offline mode when realistically their design clearly wasn't based around it being optional and B) Why did you wait till this point of development to come out and make it clear offline mode wasn't going to be an option? This will have been known for months at the very least.

Lying at PR should generally become a crime. This would fix MANY of this worlds problems!

Sometimes official responses really help to calm the masses (I'm talking from David Braben OBE himself), hence why I hope people would wait (plus I always try to be an optimist). Even Michael Brookes' answers have helped calm some people in the main thread

A) Because they apparently believed the could achieve the offline mode. Somewhere between now and maybe July this year (can't remember properly, someone was trying to put together a timeline) something went wrong (?) and they tried to make offline mode available but couldn't for the reasons I gave in the previous quotes I listed

B) Apparently they didn't know 100% till now as they made/were making completely sure offline mode wasn't achievable anymore
I'm inclined to apply for a refund since I'm not at all interested in a Call of Duty in space experience.

Hmm.... should I stay or should I go?

Go for it - the more people who apply for a refund the better. Maybe chances that Frontier will cave in and change their decision will increase (although I'm not holding my breath).

Huinehtar: Reminds me Planetary Annihilation.

Solei: The difference is that Uber did it the right way with Planetary Annihilation. After the game reached 1.0 and had been online only during the entire development, Uber released the game server as a local component for offline play - and that works like a charm both on windows and on Linux. (i know, because i backed PA too).
Right way? PA *still* doesn't have a DRM-free download. It's "DRM at installation", even if they supposedly added offline play, you can't GET to it.

Anyway, I requested a refund via KS message, and the response was:
"To request a refund contact store support - support@zaonce.net."
