bler144: I'll leave most of it to Wyrm, but I think I can safely say:
Theme/setting is Renaissance Europe, and most of the trappings you'll see in your own role (and others) will make sense. The giant squid was a joke - topical humor given squids in the news last week.
Oops...interrupted to go deal with a child who won't poop. Will add a bit more after thatproblem is solved if Wyrm hasn't jumped in first.
That's what you think.. Bookwyrm just decided to drop it from the original version due to balance issues :PTheme/setting is Renaissance Europe, and most of the trappings you'll see in your own role (and others) will make sense. Well I'll cut it lest it's confusing. In any case, it still looks like mafia to me on the whole. PMs (and any clarifying questions) should make it clear to each player what they should be trying to do.

Wait.. what? That was a joke, there was never a giant squid.... XD
I'd leave it to Bookwyrm to say what he wants about what type of game it is as it's his game.

Just to throw a couple cents into the conversation...
You probably shouldn't answer, either...
Issues to consider with an "additional goals" type of game...
1) Typically mafia is a "team" game where a good townie will take one for the team by revealing discovered information often resulting in one's early demise. Hopefully your "objectives" still allow a dead person to complete them. Else it turns the game into a big "not me" game where people are individually more worried about not dying than winning for town. It would really kinda suck to pick the right person to investigate, reveal it to town, get gacked at night and then lose on the leaderboard because of one's early death despite making the most important town move of the game. It would also suck to be rated low on a leaderboard just because you were an early night kill. "Not me" games tend to become a lot of people not saying anything. Survival should not necessarily be rewarded over good insight.

HypersomniacLive: Giant Squid? What is the theme of the game? Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea?
I plead the fifth. Actually, I totally stole that joke from Bler. There is no Giant Squid. This time. -----
Regarding the setup:
The general setting is a medieval town, and a civil war has broken out in the assassin's guild. Following a riot, the Foreigner's Quarter is sealed until the chaos dies down. You will each be playing one person that is stuck in the Foreigner's Quarter; each of you will be attempting to complete your own objectives (which may or may not have anything to do with the mafia war which is going on).
I'll try to post some more details later, when the child has had dinner and gone to bed. It is hard to share without spilling too much while I'm busy babysitting.

Additional Setup Elaboration:
Normally everyone is on a team, whether they know who their teammates are or not (ex. Town vs Mafia). Everyone either wins or loses, depending on whether their team achieves their win condition (for example, all of town wins if they eliminate the anti-town). Survivors win if they survive to the end, etc. This is the binary win/loss I was referring to: either you win or you lose.
In this particular game, everyone will have one or more objectives. Most players will have personal objectives that are not shared by any other player, and the player will score points by completing their objectives over the course of the game. At the end, everyone will be ranked according to their score (like one of those "High Score" lists that some flash games have). While I will not be providing a running tally during the game, I will provide all the information necessary for you to track your score during the game (with one necessary exception, which will be clear to the person/people that are affected). I will only roll dice once, to determine who gets which role. Once roles are handed out, my job will be to facilitate game play and hope I've accounted for everything. Any teams of players will act as one slot for scoring purposes (with the exception of any edit punishments, which will only be applied to the offender).
Made-up Game Objective Example:
-Bookwyrm (the Spy) gets points for eliminating the Cop and the Robber, though Wyrm will not know who is the Cop and who is the Robber (at the start, anyway).
-Adalia (The Cop) gets points for targeting the Spy and the Robber with his night action. He only gets the points once for each player (he can't spam his action on one of his targets to rack up score).
-Bler (The Robber) gets points for successfully stealing items from other players (regardless of who the target is, though he can only score points for robbing a particular player once during the game).
-The Day/Night cycle will be in effect, and everyone will be voting to lynch as usual.
-If Adalia and Bler realize Wyrm needs to kill them to gain points, then Adalia and Bler might work together to lynch (or otherwise kill) Wyrm (even though it doesn't score them points).
-Adalia might try to hold off lynching Wyrm until Adalia successfully gains the points for identifying Wyrm.
-If Bler gets lynched/killed in a fashion that doesn't meet Wyrm's criteria, then Wyrm doesn't get the points for Bler even though Bler is dead.
-Wyrm might have a NK or a Vig shot, or he might have to convince other players to help him achieve his goal of killing Adalia and Bler (after he figures out that those are the two he needs to kill).
-Once he's stolen from everyone, Bler might decide the best way to rank higher on the end game scoreboard is to try and kill Adalia to stop Adalia from gaining more points.
At the end of the game, each player's score will be totaled, and the players will be ranked according to their score. The score mechanism was actually introduced as a way to help balance some of the roles. It also provides my "Accidental Edit Punishment" mechanism (subtract increasing numbers of points as repeat offenses occur).
-----
I had several things I wanted to try and do with this setup:
-You are allowed to quote your PM to your heart's content. Just be aware that there is very likely someone out there specifically gunning for YOUR head, and dropping flavor clues may give them what they need to identify you.
-For most players, there are roles that will tend to align with the player, and roles that tend to align against the player. Work out who your natural allies are, who your enemies are, and consider whether you need to leave your enemies alive for a period of time.
-I've tried to make everything make logical sense, and to be able to fit into a medieval style setting (though it isn't strictly realistic).
-I've tried to make sure that no one can just hide in a corner and win, and I've tried to make sure that no one can just spam their ability(ies) and win. Everyone, including the NK factions, are going to need to think about what they are doing.
-The "town", as such, aren't allied with each other in the normal sense. They are entirely free to leave mafia members alive, if they feel comfortable with the idea of killers being loose in the streets.

Krypsyn: Call a normal game (25% Mafia ,all goons in a single team, and 75% Town, all vanilla or only a single Cop) a 1 and a Role-Madness game with multiple scum factions and/or other more complex mechanics a 10. Where on that 10 point scale would this game fit in, ballpark?
Somewhere around a 10, give or take 2 or 3 points, primarily because every player is working toward their personal objectives. The abilities and objectives of any given player are thematically linked, and each single moving part is pretty simple. The complexity comes from the interlock of everything, since each role is designed to interact with other players in some fashion. I had several things I wanted to try and do with this setup:
-You are allowed to quote your PM to your heart's content. Just be aware that there is very likely someone out there specifically gunning for YOUR head, and dropping flavor clues may give them what they need to identify you.
