dedoporno: Woot! Good for you, JKitty! I hope you're back and on track real soon :) Good luck with everything!

avatar
flubbucket: Starting new job June 13th.
avatar
dedoporno: Good luck to you, as well.
A big plus is I've reduced my drive time by 250 miles a week.....I'm gonna save a fortune in ammo!

HijacK: Speaking of jobs and resumes, I'm applying around, and it's incredibly baffling how retail "put this on shelf X" and food "make me a burger!" jobs don't call me in, but computer companies give me phone interviews.

Maybe it's something from my resume...
Or your musk....

Ahem... American Rugby. That's what it should be called :P

Musk...
Hmmmm...
I see what you mean.
avatar
Vitek: B-b-b-but... how can one find mafia without investigations and similar night actions results?
Don't ask me. I'm not playing :P

I will make an exception and give you a role if you play, you will become the nexus of all that is happening!

cristigale: ...I hope we get enough interest to run the game.
Me too XD

flubbucket: So will you root for the Penguins now??
If she's only 90 minutes from her old place in NJ, that sounds more like Flyers turf.

Sage103082: And thank you Flub. It has been a long long time of unhappiness and sadness, that i tried to hide to finally being happy and doing me.
After the storm, the clouds part to let the sunshine in. Hugs, and good luck with the move!

Hi guys

You may already be up to date on this, but I thought I'd pop in with new information about your representative.

They have been been scheduled for the game below.

Game 7 - June 6 (72/24 phases, American deadlines)
Azrael (MTG Salvation)
Cobalt (Gay Teen Forum)
Colby11 (The Giraffe Boards)
fdas (Art of Problem Solving)
GGG (Calgarypuck Forums)
Gorf (Smashboards)
heuristically_alone (xkcd)
Kennigit (CivFanatics)
Khris Kruel (Something Awful)
Leelou (JetNation)
Legato Endless (Giant in the Playground)
MightySpeck (Warlight)
Newcomb (Dark Lord Potter)
SilverKeith (MafiaLandia)
Stanari (Flight Rising)
tmofer.mashiro (Kaskus)
yogsloth (GOG)

The game is taking place on Mafia Universe. You can find the specific subforum dedicated to the championship here: http://www.mafiauniverse.com/forums/forums/36-The-Mafia-Championship-2016

I want to talk about and spectate the game - what do I do?

If you wish to actively spectate and show support for your representative, then there are two ways of doing this.

1) There will be a private spectator thread on the site for each game that you may request access to. Simply register on the site and PM the user "Thingyman", and I will add you. Feel free to spectate games that your representative isn't in as well. These threads are published after the game completes.

2) We have a spectator chat on Skype, with currently more than 200 people in it. It's very active and fun, I highly suggest you join it if you have Skype. It's way more active than the on-site ones. Just add me: thingyman.

None of these two chats/threads will be spoiled!

Finally, we kindly ask that you refrain from commenting too much on the games in public on this forum, as the other representatives will easily be able to find and read through this (as has happened in the past). I can't control what you do here, but out of respect for the integrity of this Championship, it's best if you don't discuss your reads on your representative or the other players or make comments that could potentially indicate your reads. I.e. even something like "oh man, our representative is totally being his usual self right now" is not good. Speaking very generally about what has happened so far in the game (so as to update your fellow community members) without commenting on it is fine though.

I hope this doesn't seem too strict to you guys, but the game can become very uncomfortable (and unfair) if there is discussion about it outside of the game thread. If you want to have your own private spectator chat, that is of course also totally fine and I even encourage it (I'd love to be added if you make one of these) :)

I wish your representative and your community all the best of luck for this season! :)

zeogold: I just don't get it, no matter how many times I see it: How are you supposed to figure out what somebody is just by going off of what they say? It just seems to drag on and get unbelievably boring to me. [...]
avatar
zeogold: That's kind of my point. All the random finger-pointing and "scum reading" off of no hard evidence whatsoever seems to me to be the equivalent of a crapshoot unless there's actually something concrete to go off of. [...]
avatar
zeogold: [...] more just blind guessing based off of how people talk. [...]
I must say I find this a bit surprising coming from someone who, IIRC, has an interest in psychology.
It's not all blind guessing, and random finger-pointing if one pays attention, has the patience and devotes some time to do rereads of players as the game progresses. I've been told I'm nit-picking, but I keep "the devil is in the details" in mind. Often it's little, or seemingly casually said, things that get overlooked initially, but the reaction of the player can be pretty telling when brought to attention. Like that post of flubbucket in D1 in CSPVG's Game #27 - when brought to attention on D2, his reaction got him lynched that Day; he was Mafia.

My impression is that you don't have the patience for this aspect of the game, hence prefer and rely (a lot) on what night-actions can tell you.

avatar
zeogold: The day/night setup you mention is something that would sound reasonable to me. Aren't most players expected to make at least 1 post per 24 hours anyways? [...]
It's not that simple, as either alignment. To add to what flubbucket's already said.

Imagine dedoporno, yogsloth and someone from Australia being a Mafia team Now add that these people have lives, commitments and priorities in the physical world. If the Night lasts only 24hrs, what is the actual window these three people have to discuss, plan and decide on how to proceed?
That was exactly the problem we had with the very tight Night deadlines in yogsloth's Game #37 which contributed to a number of mistakes we made.

And even as Town. Imagine Nights lasting 24hrs, and the deadline starting during one's night-time. First you have to subtract about 6-8hrs for sleep, then at least another 8-10hrs for work related things, if one has small children or other non-flexible family obligations, you can simply forget it altogether. So, one may not get a chance to even submit their night-action if they're a Power-Role if the deadline's that short, or make a hasty decision just to not miss the deadline.

That more or less applies to 72hr Days. How much actual time is there to read what's being posted, evaluate it, and make your own game-related posts? Don't forget that the 1 post/ 24hrs (or 36hrs) rule doesn't require one to post their thoughts or analysis or whatever may have some importance or impact. If the deadline is too short, someone may not ever come around to posting something that may change the course of the game.
Or get lynched without a chance to defend themselves or claim because they're pushed to L-1 during their night-time, and by the time they're realistically able to post it's past the deadline and the hammer has long fallen.

This quick-quick-quick approach can't really work when players have commitments of various degrees and are all over the different timezones.

@Sage103082 - all the best with the new start; wishing you it's all sunshine and rainbows from now on!

@flubbucket - have fun with the new job!

Sage103082: <snip>
Congrats, Sage!

I'm not sure about cheap internet options. That will probably depend on your particular location. I will say that I don't trust AT&T any farther than I can throw them (bad experience). I use Time Warner Cable, but apparently they've been bought by another company; I'm waiting to see how things change.

avatar
zeogold: Maybe I'll do this, although I'm not sure who'd be willing to discuss it with me.
When you've got a few ideas, just ask for an assistant. I'm certain someone(s) will volunteer.

We'll probably do another private chat. If it happens, I'll try to remember to send you a link.

And we'll rag heartlessly on Yog, for him to see post game! :D

Perhaps I'm in the minority here due to the type of Mafia games I'm used to playing, but I'm of the opinion that the essence of the game lies in the night actions, while the day is for theorizing, plan-making, and lying.

I suppose that's true, the nature of the setup makes it rather difficult.

I think that might be partly your Town of Salem background.

I think it's perfectly legitimate to play a game without any roles, makes it that much harder for Town.

This is true. In Town of Salem, there are no "vanilla" roles. A lot of the real-life Mafia games I've played tend to have a fairly large amount of power roles as well (at least, in comparison to the forum Mafia games I've seen).

As a result, the concept of a game without any roles seems utterly ridiculous to me.

Makes sense. I personally enjoy a few roles in the game, and I always put in 3 or 4 when hosting IRL. But I don't much enjoy role-madness, and I'm open to the idea of a role-less game.

EDIT: Yes, I consider Town of Salem to be role-madness, but it's not a bad thing if done well.

I've always loved role-madness because you know that nearly every single person has done something and knows something you don't, and is hiding/revealing/lying about it every day.
I suppose most of my qualms are more personal issues, then. If everybody's enjoying themselves, I have no problem with it, I just thought that more and more arguments and disagreements on how the game should be played have been cropping up recently.
Well, at least I've introduced a mechanic idea.
