zeogold: I just don't get it, no matter how many times I see it: How are you supposed to figure out what somebody is just by going off of what they say? It just seems to drag on and get unbelievably boring to me. [...]
zeogold: That's kind of my point. All the random finger-pointing and "scum reading" off of no hard evidence whatsoever seems to me to be the equivalent of a crapshoot unless there's actually something concrete to go off of. [...]
zeogold: [...] more just blind guessing based off of how people talk. [...]
I must say I find this a bit surprising coming from someone who, IIRC, has an interest in psychology.
It's not all blind guessing, and random finger-pointing if one pays attention, has the patience and devotes some time to do rereads of players as the game progresses. I've been told I'm nit-picking, but I keep "the devil is in the details" in mind. Often it's little, or seemingly casually said, things that get overlooked initially, but the reaction of the player can be pretty telling when brought to attention. Like that post of flubbucket in D1 in CSPVG's Game #27 - when brought to attention on D2, his reaction got him lynched that Day; he was Mafia.
My impression is that you don't have the patience for this aspect of the game, hence prefer and rely (a lot) on what night-actions can tell you.
zeogold: The day/night setup you mention is something that would sound reasonable to me. Aren't most players expected to make at least 1 post per 24 hours anyways? [...]
It's not that simple, as either alignment. To add to what flubbucket's already said.
Imagine dedoporno, yogsloth and someone from Australia being a Mafia team Now add that these people have lives, commitments and priorities in the physical world. If the Night lasts only 24hrs, what is the actual window these three people have to discuss, plan and decide on how to proceed?
That was exactly the problem we had with the very tight Night deadlines in yogsloth's Game #37 which contributed to a number of mistakes we made.
And even as Town. Imagine Nights lasting 24hrs, and the deadline starting during one's night-time. First you have to subtract about 6-8hrs for sleep, then at least another 8-10hrs for work related things, if one has small children or other non-flexible family obligations, you can simply forget it altogether. So, one may not get a chance to even submit their night-action if they're a Power-Role if the deadline's that short, or make a hasty decision just to not miss the deadline.
That more or less applies to 72hr Days. How much actual time is there to read what's being posted, evaluate it, and make your own game-related posts? Don't forget that the 1 post/ 24hrs (or 36hrs) rule doesn't require one to post their thoughts or analysis or whatever may have some importance or impact. If the deadline is too short, someone may not ever come around to posting something that may change the course of the game.
Or get lynched without a chance to defend themselves or claim because they're pushed to L-1 during their night-time, and by the time they're realistically able to post it's past the deadline and the hammer has long fallen.
This quick-quick-quick approach can't really work when players have commitments of various degrees and are all over the different timezones.
@Sage103082 - all the best with the new start; wishing you it's all sunshine and rainbows from now on!
@flubbucket - have fun with the new job!
