Sarisio: Looks like [SMT] Nocturne wins here for me. I heard that PS2 version of Persona 3 doesn't allow to control party members and PSP version allows, but I prefer to play games how they were initially made, so when I will play Persona 3, it will be PS2 version first.
Of note:

The version of Nocturne released in the US is not the original. The original had different difficulty settings, lacked a certain huge optional area (along with the ending acquired by clearing that area), and didn't have Dante in it. It also lacked certain bosses, notably Matador (who is rather difficult for the point in the game at which he appears, especially if playing on Hard mode).

My personal recommendation would be to play on Normal on your first playthrough. I started on Hard and stopped playing in part because I was worried about the game getting too frustrating, and in part because I disliked the music. (I also don't like the fact that the main character, who has no default name and is presumably intended to represent the player, must be male.)

rtcvb32: I have to wonder the size of the games. Having PC versions of X and X-2 sound fine, but they were both likely 3Gigs per, which is a fine size for a game. But I'd expect them to bet 15Gigs or larger, and that's not really worth it.

As for FF X and X-2... Mechanically I enjoyed them, the plot/story however felt too short and a wash for X, while X-2 was a little too girly and busy in some places, and the mini games didn't necessarily make sense.

edit: Found a size suggesting 37Gigs. I'd play on PS3 but not on PC with that size.
Personally, I consider any game that does not fit on a CD-ROM to be larger than I would like. Remember, back in the day, they distributed games on floppy disks.

Of note, it appears that you could fit FF6, compressed, on 2 floppies, and that was not a small game. Contrast that with the number of floppies that would be needed to fit FFX at that size.

LiefLayer: I don't like FFX.
the main problem is that it use really small maps. you cannot explore anything in this final fantasy, there are a lot of cutscenes and there is an arrow to the next one every times.
I'm not a nostalgic of any final fantasy games... I never had a PS1 or PS2, my only console were Gameboy, Nintendo DS and 3DS.
My first final fantasy was final fantasy 3 on Nintendo DS.
After that few years ago I played both Final Fantasy 7 and 10 on a PS1 and PS2 emulator.
The first impact was "Wow FF7 suck... FF10 looks great".
But after a while I was bored of FF10, while I liked FF7 so much that I completed it.
After a while I bought FF7 for iOS and a lots of FF for mobile, still my favourite are ff7 and ff3 (FF7 for the story, FF3 for the great gameplay).... and I still don't understand why anyone would like a cutscenes small game like FF10.
Actually, the problem with cutscenes you mention with FF10 is one of the many reasons I loathe FF7.

Gameplay-wise, FF5 > FF3 (and every other FF game, and most non-FF games, for that matter).

NuffCatnip: Bought it for 20 bucks, can't wait for the download to finish. :D

Finally I don't have to get my PS2 out to play it.
avatar
snowkatt: well at least they dont sell you both games seperate for 20 each
but im still gonna skip this
Yeah, I first thought they'd sell it for 40 bucks, wouldn't have bought it for that price.
20 is a great price imo, now I don't have to get my old Playstation 2 out. :)

eh id rather play those type of games on my ps2
but i loath ff 10 and 10-2 even more
so i will skip these
This is bound to be an unpopular opinion here but it kinda bothers me that many former console exclusives are gradually being ported to PC. It's that whole "don't half-ass exclusivity" thing as some game critic beautifully said a while ago. Guess I'm just desperately clinging to the holy trinity of consoles and worried by anything that threatens their reason to be.

That said, got FF X/X-2 HD for PS3 more than a year ago and was hugely disappointed. I had already been hugely let down by FF VIII back n the day, was expecting more from FF X. Not a big fan of the setting or story and well, guess I'll just never get into JRPG gameplay.

Your PS 2 still working fine?

Mine scratched so many CD's so bad it won't recognize them anymore. :/
GTA:SA, God of War 1+2, Tekken and many more. At least my favourite games are still working, but I'm not going to feed them to my PS 2 anymore, have to get a second-hand Playstation at this point.

I agree for the most part. There's a lot of data in 650Mb, often a huge portion that was used (and still takes up so much space) is video.

FF6 being entirely sprite based and having cartridge limits of about 8Mb can determine what you can put in the games. But there's so many good large games that don't take up that much space. One of my original exposures to RPG games was Phatasy Star 4. It only takes up a handful of megabytes in actual rom size, and dozens of hours of adventuring (although if you cut out the fighting then it could probably be experienced in a few hours).

Game development I think needs to change. They need to target PS2 level of hardware limitations, memory and disc size and the like, and build for that. If there's extra time/money afterwards they can raise the bar for graphical look/feel. Pushing for huge games that are all flash and no content just isn't how games are suppose to be.

yeah its fine but its relatively new
i bought it new in 2011

if your ps2 actually damages your games you may want to replace the machine all together

games want to be movies
they have been aspiring to be like movies ever since ninja gaiden's cutscenes
and now they finally have the raw power to be just that

before you know it games will be nothing more then barely interactive stories
hell we are allready there with telltale's "games"

Ah, okay.

Yeah, I thought about that for quite a while now, too bad the PS3 doesn't support PS2 titles, only the old ones did that, and they are pretty pricey. :/

Maybe I'll just get a PS4. Hmm...

snowkatt: I loved FF X. X-2 was... okay. I absolutely despised 12. First time I put my controller down, shut down the console and said to myself: I'm bored.

avatar
dtgreene: Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about ff 10?
avatar
snowkatt: a lot
i hated the story
the characters
the ridicilous character design
the voice acting was diabolical
blitzball was awful
the upgrade system was bullshit

but the worth thing of all it was a full year late in europe
it was released in late 2002
square had a year to optimize the game and it WAS still letterboxed and still ran slower
and it retailed for 75 euro

and that was just the final insult for how fucking awfull the game was
the moment i heard wakka talk i took the dvd out of my ps2 and made it fly
I loved FF X.

- Hmm did you hate the story because it was Tidus' story and not YOUR story? :P.
I liked the story quite a bit.
- I found the characters interesing and believable.
- The voice acting wasn't that great in retrospect. It was the first game I played with voice acting I believe.
- Blitzball was great! I loved it. I could shoot from my own goal post with Tidus and manage to score.
- The upgrade system was fine. I managed to get all stats to 255 except for luck with Tidus, Yuna & Riku.
- I did not even realise it was a year late in europe. But our european version got the dark aeons and other cool stuff the folks at the USA never got back then. So we got better content. I still use my big boxy TV so the aspect ratio has never been a problem to me.
- You paid 75 euro? I recall paying 60. You must've been ripped off.
- What's wrong with jamaican accents? I liked it xD

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And we just have a big opposite opinion on FF X.
Can we at least agree that 12 was horrible and 2 unplayable?

Hmm, I guess I will stick with my Nocturne's version, just like I sticked with FF X International because it had more content. That was some small exceptions to my rule.

Of course I am going to play them on normal mode. I don't like playing games on easy, and I only play on Hard if it has some additional content. I usually see Normal as the way developers intended the game to be played.

Not going to judge 12, but I actually enjoyed 2 very much. I recommend getting the GBA version or later, as spells actually level up at a good rate. On the other hand, the PSX version (Origins) should be avoided, as spells level up more slowly than in the original Famicom version. (The WonderSwan Color version I haven't tried, but I am guessing it is like the PSX version and should be avoided for the same reason.)

Also, when playing FF2, avoid armor unless you know what you're doing, make sure your Evade% is as high as you can get it, and remember to carry a shield.

I think Senteria meant FF X-2. A lot of people deny the existence of that game altogether.

Sounds good!
Guess I'll just get a new PS2/ a PS3 that can play PS2 games in the next couple days and wait for Persona 5 and get a PS4.

Thanks! :)

I have to say I liked it a great deal, yeah the story is pretty bad (okay, okay, it's more than bad), but the gameplay is decent. :)
