Travel to Los Angeles A.D. 2019 and witness its revamped looks in a new, enhanced edition of the cult point & click classic.
Genre: Adventure
Discount: 50% off for the owners of the previous GOG version of the Blade Runner game. The latter will be added to every Blade Runner - Enhanced Edition purchase.
I was thinking of buying this enhanced version at the price, just needed to make sure the enhancements were worth it.

So first port of call was reviews, and boy oh boy have they been mostly negative. So I guess I will just stick to the original GOG version.

windows984ever: So, Night Dive is also apparently working on System Shock II EE.

I don't know you all, but I'm feeling pretty iffy on that System Shock remake. I dunno...

StingingVelvet: Their work before this has been pretty great, so I wouldn't worry too much. This is a special case with the pre-rendered backgrounds and no source code. They should have left it as is, but they're far from the first company to think people would prefer blur to old aliased backgrounds.
Agreed, especially what I bolded. Naturally not everyone will agree but I think they overall have a solid track record so far.

It would be in Nightdive's interest to convince Alcon to bundle the ScummVM original with the remaster on Steam, but obviously GOG would like to keep it exclusive.

-----------

also what is the line at the bottom of the system requirements: "The original Blade Runner game was developed in 1997 and the depictions of violence that are present reflect that." Some un- politically correct violence or something? Or about the 90s panic about violent video games?

edit: the Steam page mentions more: "There are also some suggestions or insinuations that minors are engaged in sexual activity."

Wow those STEAM reviews... What happened with this remaster?
The pricing is very fair and most of the tweaks seem justified.

Grargar: I guess they weren't able to find the source code after all, and this was the result.
Yes, they weren't able to find it.
Reviews on steam are terrible! I am glad to buy the scummvm version here before. I was thinking to buy the ee version here too but looking that it doesn't worth it.

StingingVelvet: I personally agree with you for the most part, but it is pretty stupid for a game which has achievements on other platforms not to port them here. Shows a disregard for the customers who want them on this store. I'd guess it's because GOG is mostly seen as an "offline" platform, but still.
Or its just a sign that sales figures on gog do not justify the extra investment in dev time that needs to made in order to include Galaxy Achievements. So I am rather thankfull that titles show up here even if there is some (for me insignifikant ) part missing.

I don't know but I can't wait to see System Shock Remaster's similar : "WARNING : This First Person Shooter might involve shooting in First Person, because people were backward like that in 1997 unlike our enlightened post-modern selves" trigger warning... :-)

True.

Sadly, the remaster has always seemed to stepped on toes as well as be 'worse' than the OG -

I hope something can be done to fix the situation. Preservation should be build alongside, not on top, of people doing it through passion over pay

The reviews I woke up to today reflect the reality of this EE release and its quality. On top of it a sneaky delisting, original store page gone, original reviews gone. To me it's bitter-sweet... terrible to see such name as Blade runner getting so much negativity, sweet to see pc userbase not really buying into such careless hackjob "enhancement" and calling it out, lest it becomes a norm in the future. It was rather obvious from pre-release footage and screenshots, but here we are anyway. I guess every company has to have a release like this in their portfolio - one that resembles a desperate flushing of a very stubborn turd, no matter what they throw at it in panic...

In general I applaud and respect NDS for their efforts to bring in rare versions to pc and the good quality of their portings and attempt to releases the best possible version, but man ... they should stick to the shooter genre or familiar waters at least. Or hire someone who has experience with different genres and/or even cinema at technical level in this case.
I'm disappointed and at great disbelief that anyone gave a greenlight to this EE release and thought this was a good idea, that this is what fans new and old really want.

From Tweet - "They even forgot to credit me for the subtitles we let them use."

^ This alone p*sses me off enough to never buy this version. If you're going to get paid for reusing someone else's free work, the least you can do is thank them and not paywall their original behind your inferior product then white-wash them from history...

10000% agree.

FrodoBaggins: Have you ever thought of enjoying the game just because it's a good game, rather than following some list that says you're not allowed to enjoy the game unless you talk to a character 5 times, walk 100 steps, and carry 10 items in your Inventory?
avatar
ZubatyZub: But he does have a point; there's no reason to omit the achievements from the GOG release, especially considering how easy it is to add them, you can even import them from Steamworks or whatever it's called.

If you have a problem with achievements then just use the offline installer or turn them off; some people just like them.
Completely agree, also because the achievements could have been the only addition to play this ugly and useless remaster.

I never bother about completing achievements either, finishing said game is enough for me (post-game content and/or new game plus modes are just an added bonus), *however* many people like completing game achievements.
So is the Mac version of the original completely unavailable for purchase now since it's no longer possible to buy that separately and only in a bundle with the Enhanced Edition which is Windows only?

Yes, and I have no problem with the user Ancient-Red-Dragon stating his consumer decision as he is neither rude nor annoying while doing so. And I do not understand why he gets a low rating for it.
I made that comment because I have the impression that some people think that including achievements on gog is just as simple as checking a box somewhere and they magically work. Implementing them costs money and I can undertand devs/publisher that fear that they may not get enough sales on gog to justifiy that.
