Gonen32: *snip*
Well, I guess this gives another good reason against DRM.
avatar
Ricky_Bobby: What I think is absurd is that the OP on Reddit said Steam and GOG both worked .... so why doesn't he play games from Steam and GOG then ?! If gaming is so important to him.

It feels like such a childish and spoiled thing to complain about for someone living in a dictatorship that had serious human rights violations, not to mention the risk to personal safety by being a foreigner (probably Westerner) living in such a country.
avatar
Cadaver747: OP stated in Reddit the following: "I've bought the full editions of all of the Battlefield games up to this point, with their season passes". Childish or not, I don't know many places where one can buy and play online Battlefield series.
Steam sells Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (+ Vietnam), I might suggest that the OP is a fan of fast paced multiplayer FPS and he loves to play Battlefield 4 a lot, like many others prefer Call of Duty or Halo, or Overwatch or something else.
Personally I don't like those games, but I can easily understand his dissapointment. I would feel the same if US puts Russia in some black list for media content (incl. video games) and Origin forbids me to play Dragon Age 2 or Command & Conquer games.
Don't you really see a point here? It's all about exlusives bought for real money and restricted because of some political bull shit interpretation by EA.
We're talking about Burma/Myanmar here, a country where up to very recently (2012) systematic state-sanctioned rape by soldiers was common practice. Not to mention human trafficking, child labour and attempts of genocide against minorities.

This is not some "naughty country" doing "naughty things", this is about evil leaders doing some really evil shit.

That should put things in perspective here. This moron on Reddit is whining about a truly insignificant matter considering where he happens to live. He is worried about games ? he should be worried about his freakin' life and freedom.

If he was living in Hungary, Norway or Brazil I would be more sympathetic towards his cause, but this is bullshit whining and people are devouring the story simply because it's about EA.

If this was Valve and not EA people would not be discussing this matter at all; 'it's Valve, they'll sort it, no worries'.
Download your Origin games and crack them if you don't want to be a potential victim of this in the future. The fact that denying you access to the games you bought is within the power of DRM clients is just another reason why I always download my games and crack them if they are DRM'd. Blocking me access from buying general goods is one thing, denying me access from games I already bought because of a sanction is another.

But of course nobody will care about just another country they've never heard of before in their lives getting access to their games blocked. People will continue happily dealing with DRM services without knowing in advance just what they're getting themselves into.

That's cute.

So you're saying that just because his country is 'fucked,' so to say, he shouldn't complain about losing access to his purchases, EA or not? If he's okay with his habitat as of now due to whatever reasons there are, it's his choice and not ours. He might even have already worried about his life and freedom, but no matter what he does, the country is still 'fucked,' I say. And even if he isn't worried whatsoever, just because there is a bigger issue where he lives doesn't invalidate that the smaller issue exists and must be brought up to light.

Plus aren't games seen as an escape from reality? He could be even relying on those games and paying big bucks for it just to escape from this reality you describe.

EA or not, Myanmar or not, he lost a lot of money on games that EA just made unplayable. He has every right to talk about it, and he's not a 'moron' for using that right.

But he is a moron. An intelligent person would realize that this delay is just that, a delay, it is temporary. This idiot is making a big fuss over having to wait a few weeks, it's incredibly silly and childish.

I agree he has every right to complain. The issues is that we, on GOG, Kotaku and elsewhere else are inflating his complaints way out of proportion and looking at it from a childish perspective: 'oh no, this guy can't play his games, his luxury hobby is ruined'.

This is after you have bought them already I assume?

Do you have any proof it is a temporary situation?
But okay, let's suppose it is a temporary situation then. He still has every right to complain about losing access to his games, temporarily or permanently. Its his games that he bought with cash, any intelligent person would expect to be able to play them today, tomorrow, in the future and not be 'denied access' to them via means of a sanction that prohibits future dealings not past dealings.

You really think EA Origin would ignore a market where Steam operates ? does that sound plausible to you ?

EA has already stated they are working to fix it.

It sounds plausible. Just because Steam operates in it doesn't mean it would be a high priority on EA's list, and they may pretty well forget about it.

Where do they say that then? I've been looking for this statement ever since I came here this moment.

No one here is denying the horrible acts being done by SOME, and you're entitled to your opinions, but tell me:

1. Should you be held accounted for when your King does something bad? Or when the government accepts for example death as a penalty? Should you then be treated like a terrorist/hacker/murderer just because you live in that country?

2. Is it reasonable that a gaming company should dictate what is or not the right moral, ideology, or political way with another people? Tell me, was Norways primeminister wrong when she urged Facey to not act a "thought police" or a moral guide?

3: Do you honestly think that this type of reaction would ever hurt a government/dictator that has already thrown common human rights in the toilet? For all we know - this is exactly what he needs to escape the reality.

Have you never read history?

You should expect no such guarantee when you accept to use Steam, Uplay or Origin, they are the very medium whereby you access "your" games. They have the control and the final say, not the users.

A sanction is not some naughty slap on the wrist, it's a comprehensive economic blockade.

Do you really think that corrupted government equals country population being corrupted as well?

What do you know about a person to call him a "moron"? Is it okay in Sweden to accuse whole population and decide what they can or can't whine about?

I could accuse you of the very same thing. So your counter-argument is meaningless.

I expect that if a sanction were to be placed on me, that I am prohibited from the act of buying future games. Sanctions do not demand that I give back everything I own from countries who follow this sanction, sanctions demand countries who follow it to cease economic trades with the sanctioned country. Cease is a term in the present, meaning sanctions cease economic trades from here to an indefinite future. They do not cover trades in the past, AFAIK.

As games I've got from such services fall under the term 'trades in the past', I'm expected to be able to play them during the sanction's period without the ability to buy any future content. That is why he can complain about it: the items he bought in the past were revoked due to a sanction in the present.

Please show me proof of when EA said they'd fix it.

WildHobgoblin: Not only Myanmar, it seems.
"In compliance with US embargoes and sanctions laws, Origin is not available in Cuba, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine (Crimea region)."
At least it works in USSR (Eastern Berlin and surroundings). ;P
