Geralt_of_Rivia: No, then they would just say: "See, online DRM is working...".

dewtech: DRM never works, have you heard of Denuvo, it took time, but people got around it either way.

Did DA:I sales go up because it wasn't cracked until this week? They didn't, that's because there are actually only a few different types of people who pirate. Pirated games aren't lost sales, becuase most pirates wouldn't buy the game.
1) Poor people - they don't have the money for luxury items and need the money they have to live
2) People who hold grudge against a company - I'M LOOKING AT YOU EA!!! F**K YOU FOR WESTWOOD AND OTHERS
3) People who try out the game before buying it. - Most people I know are like that (that's what you get for losing demo variants and shareware)
4) Stupid people who think they are part of a counter-culture or whatever.

Was about to point this one out as well.....
Its a very poor attitude by Croteam .
A game is about the gameplay not stupid achievements and leaderboards (im sure many cheat to get high scores anyway).
Also tells me the devs are lazy pricks as well imho
Is it bad I had to Google The Talos Principles? Looks interesting but the developers stance seems really silly to me. Oh well guess my money isn't good enough for them.

It's just a typo. :p

No, but it's a cool puzzle game. We're just not important enough. ;_;

Piranjade: Strangely enough you don't even need Steam for that.
Race The Sun, Long Live The Queen and many other games have in-game achievements and some even have online Leaderboards.
Risen 2 as well (can't check right now if Risen has those but I suspect it does), S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat has "achievement perks" that actually affect the game (you find more valuable artefacts, stalkers are more likely to help you etc.), Mass Effect games and others.
So yes, "achievements"!="Steam".

Problem is, Valve provides devs with tools (so they don't need to spend time on some minor things) and a large audience (potential byuers). Achievements are likely just an excuse.

Fenixp: Worked for Blizzard, pirated version of Diablo 3 still doesn't work properly.
As far as I'm concerned it didn't worked because I didn't bought that game. Had a look arround and discovered Path of Exile, a free game for which many many people swear is better than blizzard's.
I know what game I'll buy at -80% or in a bundle :)
If they claim I'm a second class citizen, they can only get second class citizen's money :)

I believe a direct link of the post quoted in the article that you linked is much better:

SCPM: Sadly that attitude is too common. The devs behind Zeno Clash and Broforce said the exact same thing. And the worst part is, a DRM-free version would have been vendor agnostic, but so many devs and publishers seems to think all PC games need achievements and leaderboards. :(

realkman666: Valve have found a clever way of getting exclusivity. Convince enough dumb kids that trophies, cards and bullshit are more important than the games themselves and no indie will want to be without these things.
How come nobody bags on Microsoft since they kind of started the whole thing with Xbox Live (which last I checked was pretty popular). All Valve did is join the bandwagon.

synfresh:
There's no point in beating a (literally) dead horse.
Between this and the reviews I've read of it, I can safely say that I won't actively try to get the game. Perhaps if it shows up in a Humble Bundle or something, but not before then.

Well I never said it'll force people to buy the game, I said it's quite effective at preventing piracy :D And yes, Path of Exile is excellent.

A console has always been closed down. Valve has turned the "open" PC market into a similar state, which is really fucking sad. And now that big publishers have their own game prisons, there are less and less "open" avenues.

Yet PC consumers still continue to buy PC games, more than they ever have before. More PC games are being developed than ever before. Maybe PC gamers are just evolving in how they buy and consume the content they buy.

I' would hardly label supporting a primarily American hegemony "evolving".

Yes indeed. This year has been a great year too.
