Smannesman: I'm 99% sure that's a hoax.
I agree, probably a hoax.
However; If you are hungry enough you'll eat cats and dogs. Even raw chicken.
I know Korea has a dog market where they raise dogs for their meat, but that's not quite the same.
CARRiON.FLOWERS: Why is it taboo to eat a cat or a dog or even a horse exactly?
tinyE: Simple, because they're cute.
Not quite. Has more to do with medicine we give our pets and animals. If I recall right in Germany you can write off your horse under tax exemptions for the purpose of slaughter/consumption later, but then you can't use certain medicines, drugs or anti-biotics. I remember this was covered in an episode of
MASH.
Seems
Bute is one of the drugs not intended for human consumption that goes into horses.
tinyE: Simple, because they're cute.
CARRiON.FLOWERS: Rabbits are cute too and those are less taboo to eat then a cat or dog.
Hmm I remember my mom considered raising rabbits, she was doing calculations on cost vs work vs slaughter, and then the cost in raw meat. I think it was calculated at 35¢ a pound in raw rabbit meat if we raised them ourselves. Of course I don't know if I could slaughter rabbits. Also Rabbits were never on the list of dairy/stock animals and thus could be had in-town vs out of town.
But we never did it, just explored the idea.
