It's not a case of refusing, it's a case of not seeing the wood for the trees.

Yeah, I figured as much. You may or may not be aware, but for a fair number of people here making a thread sticky makes it very easy to miss.

This has been much debated in previous delisting threads so I know I'm not alone in this.

I still don't understand why they refuse to make two threads about delistings. One sticky with just the announcement and another unsticky one that can also be used for discussion. No one would miss the announcements this way.

My proposal in the discussion thread was even simpler. Have a "master" delisting sticky that people can bookmark: Bookmarked stickies appear at the top with other bookmarked threads so it would shoot to the top when there's a new post. If it was locked and the staff just made one new post per delisting it would be very effective.

This way it's visible for the "please sticky the delisting threads" crowd and also the people who won't see it in the stickies (because they can bookmark it).

Did you make that by actually replying to sysia or just pasting a quote in? The forum only generates a notification if you make a new post using the reply button on someone's post. Simply having a quote in your post isn't enough (as years of playing mafia here have taught me).

Hey, I'll have you know that those mushrooms in my beard are carefully cultivated!
I leave this publicly released statement from the only developer left working on the game for posterity, make of that what you will:

Q: Hi, I saw that you decided to remove the game from GOG, may I ask why?

Danny-Hayes: Hey there, sorry for not doing a proper announcement.
It's a decision I've taken because Delve is just me for now, and unfortunately it's just a clear pattern that everytime I interact with or update the game on g og, we see a big increase in piracy activity. The game also just doesn't sell anything on there, maybe 1 or two copies in a month usually. I don't mean any disrespect at all to our true players, I just don't have time to keep up with it all by myself. I do still believe in DRM free, and piracy for those who truly can't afford the game, but it makes things tough for me when free download links keep shooting up the search results on google to the first page just from searching for the game itself. I'm living month to month, so I just gotta keep my focus on as few problems as possible right now. DRM free downloads will still be available via our Itch page though.

[...] Since I have done wrong by the gog community, and because updating the game on gog at the last minute could possibly cause more piracy links to pop up, ironically, I would advise that gog players simply go ahead and pirate the latest version (it's pretty easy to find). I could provide steam keys or something, but I also won't do wrong by gog by taking players to another platform. [...]

The funny thing is that the very first three search results on Google for "CHANGE: A Homeless Survival Experience Download" are cracked Steam versions (v2.0). A GOG version (v1.9) appears later in the results.

This piracy argument is complete bullshit.

I always scoff at this argument, because I always see releases pirated from Steam and other sources, even when the game is released on GOG (see attachment).
I also don't know how releasing a game DRM-free elsewhere is supposed to protect it from piracy. Security through obscurity? Pirates haven't heard about Itch.io and somehow never will? Make it make sense.

Now this I don't doubt. If you paid attention to the two Insomnia sales, you've noticed hardly any sales even for popular titles. I can easily see how a niche game would completely fail to find an audience here.

A few years back I had some "Internet Guy" tell me torrent sites are full of GoG games.

So I popped onto t well know site looked at the top 200 PC games ranked by Seed.

20 Games per page, and not a single GoG game on the first 2 pages

Only 1 in the top 50 (it was Spore IIRC)

In total there was less than 20 (18 is the figure that comes to mind but this was a while ago) GoG games in the top 200 shared games. And over half of those were also available as higher ranked Steam torrents.

So I presented this "Internet guy" with my findings

His reply

"You're doing it wrong, you have to search for GOG to make it work"

The Argument GOG releases increase piracy is, and unless Valve fix their DRM, will always be extreme BS!

That probably depends on where you look for it.
If you are searching some crackwatch sites, obviously GOG versions never show up there, because there's nothing to crack.

But if you use some torrent search engines, GOG versions actually can show up first.

I don't think too many people use Google to search for pirate games.

I love how that statement is so wrong in so many ways.

First of all, I love how his alternative to GOG people is first to pirate the game, and only after that consider "Steam or something".

But there's also a lovely logical error there.
If GOG is the cause of piracy, then where does the latest version for the disappointed GOG users to pirate comes from? Steam?

And how would updating the GOG version "at the last minute" have anything to do with piracy, if pirates have already got the game during the earlier minutes?

I used Google search because the Google search index also reflects the popularity of a link, i.e. clicks, several sites having a link to a website, probability that a user clicks on a link, etc. I also looked on other sites now.

The last version on GOG is 1.9 from 2021-10-25. On one site (with torrents) you can find a Steam build which was released in February this year. Other builds (with version 2.0) also include the DLC which is missing from the GOG version. The DLC was released in April this year. On another site you can find the version with the DLC and the guy from above in the comments asking to buy the game. It was a month before the outdated version without the DLC got delisted here.

Always has been. I remember Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot claim "95% of PC gamers are pirates". Of course when uncrackable Denuvo was slapped on Ubisoft games, sales never went up even 2x let alone 20x that would be actual proof of that... ;-)

I've just looked at the most well know site

top 100 PC games

There are 3 GoG titles, the first was place 74th

The ONLY reasons a GOG game will show up first is

1) The only working version comes from GOG
or
2) The GOG version is considered vastly superior
or
3) You put "GOG" in the search box

That is it
