Basically, If you have a game which supports both, you have to use 3rd person because you can see way more and around corners etc.
That is also the reason why it's less immersive if you have anything not mainly about what clothes you wear (MMOs) because you have to ask yourself why you're a floating camera all the time.
Of course you can deliberately use 1st person like GTA V on PC, and in single player that even works, but if you have multiplayer and other people use 3rd person, say hello to the situational awareness gap.
As it feels awkward in first person that you not look exactly at something when you shoot it, rapid precise aim is preferable and now you know why the joypad-using aka console games don't like to implement 1st person much.
And then there comes the accustomed factor like when you play all games in first person all the time, you go like "WTF this 3rd person shit i hate it" without even giving it a fair shake - which I did in the past and the thread opener too I think.
