muntdefems: This one isn't on Kickstarter yet but it will eventually be, so this is basically a notification in advance. :P

Today I discovered The Padre. It's basically a mouse-driven (and voxelized) modern day Alone in the Dark, and it doesn't try to hide it. There's a downloadable demo at Gamejolt, and I'm liking it so far.
It's live now. There's no mention about whether it's gonna be Steam-only or not. I've left them a comment asking about DRM-free options. Fingers crossed...
Hey, gang!

My monthly Kickstarter review series is back for November. I know at least a couple of the projects I'm showcasing haven't been mentioned here. I'd love to know what you think about my selection and the article itself.
If you don't mind furry characters:
"Something To Do With Love is a romantic, slice of life dating sim with multiple paths and a cast of animal people."

Personally, I like the "VHS tape" stylization of this game.

@Michael R.: HA! Now that's good marketing right there ;-)
- There will be a DRM Free Version
- Steam, GoG & Others
- Systems: Depends on the success of the Kickstarter. For now its PC. We're probably going to make Mac & Linux versions in any case. PS4 & Xbox One are stretch goals.

Only 74 minutes left for https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1757963851/my-time-at-portia-an-enchanting-sandbox-simulation btw! ;)

hummer010:

The whole thing is being developed on PCs. The same type of computers that has been used to develop World of Warcraft! The entire development team is based in Europe, the same continent on which Game of Thrones and Star Wars were filmed, and many of our developers are carbon-based lifeforms, just like J. K. Rowling, Mel Brooks and the creators of Dungeons & Dragons!

hummer010: Alright, these guys at least have a sense of humour!
This appears to have been extended by Kickstarter.

edit: Oops, my mistake. They did it themselves:

I saw this one receiving some much deserved love and support on Twitter. Here's the synopsis for anyone interested:

"Sense - 不祥的预感: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story is a 2.5D game inspired in design by Clock Tower and Fatal Frame, and story-wise by sci-fi classics like Bladerunner as well as heavily from Traditional Asian Folklore. Set in the year 2083 in Neo Hong-Kong, the story follows Mei-Lin Mak, a young woman with cybernetic eyes pulled into the maelstrom of an unsolved supernatural mystery from centuries past. As she peers deeper into the mystery, her perception of reality slowly crumbles around her, leaving her to question every intricacy of her surroundings."

And amazingly enough, it has reached it's not so small goal already. Happy times. Amazing for a point&click adventure game, seing the problems several other great projects have had recently.

K'nossos isn't asking for much, and yet it's having a really hard time getting there.

And then we have the unfortunate failures of several very promising projects...
Shakes & Fidget
Harold Halibut
Shadow of the Mask
The Puppet of Tersa (... being only chapter 1 might have something to do with this one)

It's especially interesting the comparison between Trüberbrook's success and the traction it's getting and the lack thereof that Harold Halibut had. Seing how similar both games are graphically (I like HH a little bit more with its full commitment to motion capture).

Yep, it's surprised me too considering how high it was (in my eyes) the entry tier for a copy of the game. I'm a strong KS supporter, but 25€ seems a bit too steep for a game from some unknown studio without previous credentials. Up to $15/15€ seems acceptable to me, but I always thought only bigger, more known names were able to pull it off with higher 'demands'.

Kickstarter fatigue definitely plays a part, I think. I don't visit the site nearly as often as I used to, and I only found out about Trüberbrook through the link here. I did hear about Shakes & Fidget due to backing a previous King Art project, but I missed Harold Halibut altogether - shame, as it looks like it could have been pretty good. :(

It was faster than expected, but not totally unexpected.

1) They come from Germany, where the genre has very strong roots. I saw somewhere that over 1000 of their current backers are from Germany.
2) They don't tell us what they would like to do. They show us what they have done already. That's convincing.
3) They have a very well thought campaign otherwise too. Kickstarter page is informative, video is both fun to watch and also shows exactly what the game is all about, and they even answer questions bilingually in the comment section.
4) The whole thing is very unique and hasn't really been done before.
(Okay, technically it's close to what "Jack Houston and the Necronauts" is trying to do, but since that project has really gone nowhere in the last five years, it's still unique.)
5) Having Ron Gilbert appearing in the campaign probably doesn't hurt either.

Overall, they are showing how a good campaign is done, and that there's no "Kickstarter fatigue" to speak of, if what you are presenting is good enough.

rgnrk: And then we have the unfortunate failures of several very promising projects...
Yeah. I haven't followed all those you mentioned, but have followed some, and some others you didn't mention.
In almost every case, they did something wrong.

Shakes & Fidget? Well that was a surprising failure, but they didn't show at all the real game in their video, even though the video otherwise was fun. Maybe they relied too strongly on their franchise and on the other hand the success that their partnered developer had had.

Then again, we really don't know how close they could have come to their goal, as they themselves canceled the campaign.

I wanted to mention this earlier but I forgot. Yeah, his sole appearance there may have tipped the balance for some doubtful potential backers.
