Stilton: Could you clarify your a la carte comment?
Have you experimented with Linux?
Ixamyakxim: I have experimented a bit with Linux yup! With Mint - I like it but I do worry as it spins up my fans on my GPU when doing mundane tasks (think browsing). This worried me a bit (head frightens me when it comes to computers!) - I'll probably put more time into it when I either 1) update my GPU or 2) whenever new drivers come out.
By al a carte I mean I worry it'll shift to subscription and / or "app" pricing for an increasing number of functions. I worry that certain aspects of the OS will be moved over to monthly or yearly subscriptions, or small functions will increasingly require an app like purchase. The notion of it being a "service" is what triggered this and I'm fully willing to dive in should my worst fears not pan out.
I've tinkered with Linux a little, but I can't say I see it challenging Windows for my needs for a long time to come. Its pretty amazing how quickly its got to where it is, and it has some very good ideas, but as of now its more a day to day utilitarian choice than one to make me happy I'm using it.
Thanks for the clarification. If it went the way you fear it would be massively disappointing. It sounds all too possible with the way things are fracturing like fireworks. I suppose a modular approach is sensible in some respects, but having a price tag/cons attached for each choice could ruin the ease that most like and want from a single complete OS.
