ddickinson: Okay, so I'm planning on doing another Star Wars giveaway next week, for the general forum this time. I was thinking about doing a fun "Nerd Edition", where I would pick some questions and a random winner would have to answer those questions in order to win a game. I have a few ideas about it all, but I was not sure it would be a good idea for a giveaway.

Heres what I was planning to do:
1. Ask everyone who is in to PM me at least three trivia questions about Star Wars, as difficult as they can make them.
2. Once I have all the questions from actual Star Wars Nerds :-), I will make a list and pick 10 at random.
3. I will pick a lucky winner and get them to answer 10 questions in 2 minutes (to try to stop them just Googleing the answers). If they post within two minutes of me making my post of questions, then they get the prize. If not, it goes to the next, until I run out of questions. Of course, I would have to check they were online and ready to answer before I post the questions.
4. If no one answers all 10, then it goes to the highest score.

What do you all think of the idea?
I think it's a good one. A twist on the standard giveaway is always a good thing.

There's more logistics involved, for the person and yourself, but the primary potential problem I see is the possibility of someone's internet going to crap at a horrible moment and messing with the time limit.

The forth and firth game were bad as well. It went from English developers with English humour, to German developers with German humour. They even turned Simon into a Yank, to try to appeal to the 'mericans. In fact, most of the game play and story in the fourth and fifth game have been dumbed down or changed for the US market.

They do look pretty cool. They look a bit like King's Quest in regards to all of the cliches and fairy tales, but with a more humorous tone. (Is this thought accurate at all?)

My suggestion - go with Simon the Sorcerer. It's cheaper, and it's on sale. Rebellion's price is going to stay at 5.99 for the next few months at least.

XD You know there is a R2 replica I saw the other day for $3000. If I had any kids I'd probably trade one of them for it.

I am German and the German version was not that bad. But the translation was horrible, so I can see how anyone playing it in a different language would not like them. They were far from being as good as the first two, but also not bad.

Of course you would say that, you're German, you get German humour :-). But to take a game with British humour that many people loved, and then just Americanise it and add German humour is not a good thing. I did not mean any offence by my comment, just that British and German humour is quite different.

I know, but it was the only way I could think of limiting peoples ability to cheat and use Google. I will have a think over the weekend and maybe start it next week, just in time for the next batch of releases. If it ends up not going well, then I will just pick a winner randomly and share the questions just for fun afterwards.

I never understand why companies do such poor English translations (looking at you Daedalic!). I would think English would be the most popular language for games, not just because of the US, but because it is one of the largest spoken second languages for many people. But for some reason they do a really poor job, not just in the translation but the quality of the voice actors they use. Just look at A New Beginning - they would like robots.

I think that is a leftover problem from times when a lot of adventures were only produced for German costumers since publishers did not see they could be profitable in other countries. Of course you would think now with all the digital distribution the companies would have caught up and invest more in doing good translations but yeah... they are slow.

[edit] And these poor translations is another reason why I am often angry at companies for not offering the German languages pack. I can understand them and they are often better, so I want them -.-

Understandable. Having a trivia quiz gets difficult when a contestant can pull up info on virtually anything in less than a minute.

I can understand that. I have spoken to several people who's primary language is not English and they have said the same. Before I started chatting on GOG I would never have thought that different languages were part of different licensing agreements/owners. I always assumed it was all part of the same game and all in one package.

Okay, now a bit of silliness I have always been curious about.

I have heard that many Germans love it, but I know some find it poor taste. I was just wondering what you thought? If it causes any offence then please accept my apology, that was definitely not my intend. I know that John Cleese got a big fan base in Germany from German people who loved the scene and the show. The character has had a blow to the head (hence the bandages) and that is why he is behaving like that. Not that his regular character is too different. :-)

Edit: The joke is supposed to be about the Englishman's ignorance and ill manners due to his blow to the head, not about insulting the Germans.

I will probably start it next weekend, that way all the new Star Wars games will be out and other people's Star Wars giveaways should have ended, as I don't want to take attention away from their awesome giveaways. But if anyone else used my idea before I get a chance to, we will all know they stole it here. :-)

Fair enough, it was only a bit of silliness. And I was kinda getting worried that I might actually cause some offence, which is the last thing I would want to do. It was just a scene from a 1970's BBC comedy.

As I mentioned above, the joke is supposed to be about the Englishman's ignorance and ill manners due to his blow to the head, not about insulting the Germans. In the episode the Germans are the polite and respectable people, while the Englishman behaves poorly due to his injury. I wonder if this is why many people in German loved the show? A bit like the old BBC comedy Allo Allo, about the French resistance during the War. It makes fun at the French, but also at the British and shows the British as idiots whos secret agents can't even speak French properly.

Don't worry. I am not really into all these nationality stuff and normally do not get offended by stuff about that. Because nationality is just something that happens to you it is not like you choose where you were born. Of course it influences you but that does not mean you are like everyone else in the country or that silly clichés or prejudices apply to you :D
I would only get offended if someone was spouting insults or lies about a nationality and would not be able to accept that probably most of the people living there would not fall into the category of things he was talking about ;-)
