j0ekerr: Interesting, would you demonstrate its effects before a live studio audience?

And where's Billy? Why isn't he here shouting; "3 MINUTES TO GO"?

Ah, there he is, right after I said it.
Sure as long as there's money in it (a lot)..

CarrionCrow: I'm listening to someone describe a horcrux from Harry Potter, and my brain just keeps screaming, "That's called a phylactery, you fucking hack! I read the D&D books describing it, and they came out a hell of a lot earlier than your bullshit!"
Yes. Harry Potter sin't very original but i remember seeing a thread on imdb.com claiming that Tolkien (!) was ripping off Harry Potter.....

Hmm...nothing for me in the new round....

I love Potter but everything in it, and I mean everything, is based off of other things that are based off of other things. A three headed dog guarding the key to immortality? Come on! XD To Rowling's credit she more or less admits that in much the same way Lucas did with Star Wars, coming right out and saying, 'These are taken strait from the adventure stories and the mythologies I grew up reading.'

And I'm paraphrasing that, so don't come in here asking for a specific time and place for that quote. :P

What do you expect out of J. K. Rowling? The more serious the books became, the more she showed what a hack she is.

I read Raising Steam recently. It was a bleak experience. The book felt so flat and uninspired. And When I read the Maurice book right after and found it as brilliant as I hoped, I realized just how much it had affected him.

I don't have a problem with it that she admits that she was ...uhm inspired by other stuff....and i enjoyed reading the books...

And that I'm gonna argue with. I think she can write very well. That's part of the reason she can get away with borrowing everything, she can actually write.
No Rogue Squadron… guess I'll sleep through it and see what tomorrow's deals will be :P

(slightly tempted by Outlaws but, I've got a question: is it more than just a generic "run in and shoot them all" FPS?)

She can write, no question on that, she can write, funny, charming, optimistic, whimsical children books. The early ones were the best precisely because of that. And I loved them. But as the books slowly became more grim and gritty I lost all interest in them. Reading through them was a chore, and too often I felt the characters were given the idiot ball for the sake of plot.

I never got around to reading the last one because of that.

And about the games. Oh lookie there, Anomaly defenders. Remember the almost-Keaning?
This should make Crow's day. Just thinking of all those unsuspecting souls who will enjoy these great games.

Her most valuable thing to me is that good or bad, original or not, she got kids reading. Those are the only books my nephew has ever picked up. Yes you can say, but there are better things they could be reading, but I think in this day and age getting kids to read ANYTHING is a minor miracle. Do you realize a lot of kids don't even know what a newspaper looks like? :P

Have you tried giving him some Pratchett?

And I agree with Rowling's value being in her ability to hook kids on her books. Although if that was all they ever read, it kinds of fails as an entryway into other forms of literature.

I think Discworld would be very enjoyable to most Potter readers. Except to the hardcore Potterheads that won't accept a wizard doing magic without a wand.
Hooray for the forum eating the latest entry of the tracker so I got to go back and do it again.

Note to self - write it somewhere else and assume that something's going to go to shit before pushing the post button.

Additional - up 4 more, but after the previous round, this one is virtually dead by comparison.

I have a number of decisions to make this round, much less boring that way. ;-)

I give this 2 more days tops and people are going to start getting more and more annoyed at the wait time.

Most likely. I'm OK with it so far though, I've been doing housework and shopping and stuff without fear of missing anything.
