I love Potter but everything in it, and I mean everything, is based off of other things that are based off of other things. A three headed dog guarding the key to immortality? Come on! XD To Rowling's credit she more or less admits that in much the same way Lucas did with Star Wars, coming right out and saying, 'These are taken strait from the adventure stories and the mythologies I grew up reading.'

And I'm paraphrasing that, so don't come in here asking for a specific time and place for that quote. :P

What do you expect out of J. K. Rowling? The more serious the books became, the more she showed what a hack she is.

I read Raising Steam recently. It was a bleak experience. The book felt so flat and uninspired. And When I read the Maurice book right after and found it as brilliant as I hoped, I realized just how much it had affected him.

I don't have a problem with it that she admits that she was ...uhm inspired by other stuff....and i enjoyed reading the books...

And that I'm gonna argue with. I think she can write very well. That's part of the reason she can get away with borrowing everything, she can actually write.

She can write, no question on that, she can write, funny, charming, optimistic, whimsical children books. The early ones were the best precisely because of that. And I loved them. But as the books slowly became more grim and gritty I lost all interest in them. Reading through them was a chore, and too often I felt the characters were given the idiot ball for the sake of plot.

I never got around to reading the last one because of that.

Her most valuable thing to me is that good or bad, original or not, she got kids reading. Those are the only books my nephew has ever picked up. Yes you can say, but there are better things they could be reading, but I think in this day and age getting kids to read ANYTHING is a minor miracle. Do you realize a lot of kids don't even know what a newspaper looks like? :P

Have you tried giving him some Pratchett?

And I agree with Rowling's value being in her ability to hook kids on her books. Although if that was all they ever read, it kinds of fails as an entryway into other forms of literature.

I think Discworld would be very enjoyable to most Potter readers. Except to the hardcore Potterheads that won't accept a wizard doing magic without a wand.

Most likely. I'm OK with it so far though, I've been doing housework and shopping and stuff without fear of missing anything.
