Surely in the trenches, it was the individual soldiers that endured and overcame the horrible conditions to win the day.

If I remember correctly, Germany was the best equipped with large and small artillery and the industrial production to back up their forces. and tactically were strong with both offensive and defensive deployment, France was next being the most organized, except they were weak with their defensive tactic and strategies. All the other continental forces involved were conscripted armies, with 2 to 3 years of service, except for Britain, which had volunteer soldier that served for 7? year period, and had career officers, many that rose through the ranks.

<sigh> I can't remember what it was about the officer core of the BEF that stuck out for me to think of them, but I'll try to remember or look up some things later. :)

Also, I'm laughing right now because I find dialogue railroading amusing.
Guy mentions a problem, I get the option of saying I don't care about it and that I'll get back to him in a few days when it's resolved, after which I am immediately railroaded into doing the quest anyway.
I think I'll just vent my anger by killing shit with an oversized sword.

So many games to do that with.

Before going all "screw you" on me, eh? I guess that's better than them going "la la la la la la la, I can't hear you" and then "screw you" on me.

I don't hold much hope, and will probably be left with "at least I tried". Worse case scenario, I'll ask GOG to buy me a fancy mobile device to use their site, it sure looks like it's designed for one. ;-)

First World War Short Fact #2:
A quick follow up to my previous fact about British soldiers and their marksmanship. During the war, the average British trained soldier could shoot (accurately and aimed, not just random shooting) 16 rounds a minute. That is less than 4 seconds to aim, shoot, and reload the breech (as the rifles were bolt-action, firing one round at a time).
The turks were lucky, the british had some incompetent officers at Gallipoli. I also think there was some racially motivated underestimation of the ottoman forces too.

Also, the ottomans had Sanders Pasha :D A german officer.

You were not wrong with your comments about the officers, I was just trying to point out that not all of them were good. There were of course officers who were wonderful, but there were also those who were not. British officers were indeed often career officers, hardened through many of the wars fought during those times of the British Empire. The British officer training academy has always been highly regarded, which is why many nations still send their higher ups (military and royalty) to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. It was often the discipline and dedication to duty that made all the difference. As I mentioned earlier, the British army, especially in those days, relied more on the skills of their soldiers and officers, rather than numbers (mainly because we are an Island Kingdom, and could not field the numbers some of the other nations could).

Looks like GOG's working on stuff. Last time my game count was at 795, now it's at 799.
I thought everything had been unbundled already.

Again, it goes down to them being used to a different style of warfare. The First World War was the dawn of the modern era of warfare, with the introduction of things like tanks and military aircraft. You only have to look how the Ottomans would mess up to see my point about all sides finding it difficult to adapt.

For example, the first confrontation between Britain and Germany was a cavalry charge between two mounted divisions. In fact, and I can't remember the actual battle, but during the end of the war, the British led the last ever successful cavalry charge, against the Ottomans. The fact they still fought with horses, sabres, lances, and cavalry charges shows just how mixed the fighting styles of the war was.

Also remember that the British in those regions were often ill equipped and relied on colonial militia to bolster their numbers, and unfortunately these militia forces were not as well trained and would flee or turn traitor.

I often use my tablet to view the site while I am at work, as I am out in the fields and use the cell signal. From my experience, the site is slow, and quite annoying to navigate on a mobile device. I prefer the PC site so much better, even if it is starting to look like a mobile site.
