donsanderson: No idea how I did that, one showed up and when I refreshed there were two.
Yes we certainly did spend our money, I think with shorter, faster paced, sales we would have spent more though.
I don't worry about having multiple backups of files I can re-download like GOG's. I DO however have at least 3 backups of important and irreplaceable data, 2 offline and one online. Seen too many customers shed big tears when you tell them 10 years work just went away. :-)

HypersomniacLive: I don't consider any online store an extension of my storage devices, so everything gets downloaded and neatly backed up.
All data I value get the same treatment.

I think I'm ready to try catch some rest. See you all tomorrow, good night.
Hope you get some good sound sleep, see ya tomorrow.

CarrionCrow: Also, might as well put this here as a way to lock myself into it - once I get the logistics worked out, people can expect two things - a stream of Escape Goat (so people can see that I'm not exaggerating when I talk about how INSANELY FRIGGING HARD the post-game levels are), and yes....dooming myself right here and now with a commitment to stream my gradual loss of any remaining sanity with a rousing playthrough of Hatoful Boyfriend.
I look forward to the EG stream.

I will do everything in my power to deny the existence of the other stream, however. Fortunately I can be quite stubborn.

Figuring that one will have to be start to finish. I think that's the best way to show the progression (or unholy descent, if you prefer) from tutorial, to standard difficulty, to hard difficulty, to "dear gods kill me now I don't wanna play anymore" difficulty.

I just freed up 70 GB on my hard drive by deleting the entirety of the contents of my downloads folder!

I remember years ago (we're talking nigh on 14 years) I used to burn my downloads off to archive CDs in the thought that I might want them again someday. I don't think I could keep up burning CDs these days! :D Then again back then I had a 6.4GB hard disk and that was considered pretty big...

And I don't think I used one of my archive CDs more than once. ;)

Good morning, everyone !!

Only sporadicly slept last night (for the second time since the beginning of the week... lol), thanks to the germs.
I try to look not in a too bad shape at work, but my face doesn't lie.
I need more coffee. Much more coffee !!
How are you doing ? Much better than I, I hope :))
I also think about buying a new external HD to put all my games and data on... one of the 2 we had broke down a few months earlier ; we still have one (with many movies, tv shows and data), but if it also dies, we'll lost almost everything... :( and since we seem to be quite out of luck lately... we shall not tempt fate. But I must wait January... at least !

Good morning! I'm doing great. :)

I gave up on buying external HD's recently, they all die sooner or later and that can be REALLY frustrating. I think you're better off paying for a decent cloud storage service like dropbox and store all your stuff there. In the end you'll probably spend the same as if you keep buying new hard drives every year. :(

Crikey, that's bad luck! I've never dabbled in external drives but internal HDDs have seldom let me down over the years - certainly not to the level that I've had to buy a new one every year. What brand(s) have you been buying?

Well, I do admit that "once every year" is a bit of an exaggeration. It's been more like once every 2 years, which is still disappointing, imo. I've had mostly Western Digital and Toshiba ones.

I have Western Digitals too. One portable, 1 To (passport), and one "big" (which stay at home), 2 To, both bought 2 years ago ; the one which broke down was a "big" too, 1 To, bought 5 years earlier (we don't know why it's "dead")...

Yeah, 2 years is still pretty bad - when you consider drives used to have 5 year warranties (maybe that's why they reduced the warranty). WD should be good enough too. I tend to ignore the horror stories about one particular brand being worse than another - think people have a bad experience with a drive and forever taint that manufacturer in their mind.

To be honest, I've almost always bought Seagate Barracudas and never had a drive go bad that wasn't many years worn. Bad sectors, yes (which is annoying if it happens to take data out you need).

Although I wonder - do your drives just go kaput completely or do they just start struggling to read certain data?
avatar
tinyE: Well shit, how am I going to derail this!?
Ha, my thoughts exactly! Although my derailing style is quite different from yours we share the same affliction, I don't even know what to do with this thread :)

They never go completely kaput, usually they just struggle to read data and get bad sectors. It has also happened to me that they can't write or delete data but they can still read it.
Actually I use them very seldom, it's not like they're spinning for 2 years non-stop. I guess lack of usage could cause problems too.
