EndreWhiteMane: I've heard the term 'yes mum' used many times when addressing a woman of authority, that's why I thought it meant ma'am (pronounced 'mam'). Or is ma'am pronounced the way I would pronounce 'mom', 'o' as in mop not moment?
Any idea how mother became mum? I believe ours was actually of mother's day card origins. :/
Wow, this even confused me, and I wrote it. Good luck. ;)
As I said to Moon, there are many different dialects, so it's possible you heard it and it sounded like mom to you. It's definitely not supposed to sound like mom, it's supposed to sound like mam, but with a slightly longer A sound (maam), a bit like the word ham. I think it's the long A that can makes it sound like an O sometimes, depending on the person accent.

This American lady pronounces it about right.

As for the origin of the word mum, I have no idea of the top of my head. Probably from some Middle-English word, but I'm not sure.

How did things progress into a language lesson? :-)

Endres complaining lead to it ;-) But it is very interesting :-)

Ragnarblackmane: Oh, I have a Book of Grudges like any self-respecting Dawi.
That sounds like a very interesting book, one that binds the fate of all Dwarves in the Empire. I am not to upto date with Warhammer Fantasy. I was when I was younger, but then I drifted away towards 40K.

Most of the topics that develop in here are interesting. They start from such small things and end up picking up speed until they take over the general discussion. Only to be replaces a while later with something completely different. That is the beauty of the thread, well that, and the lovely people who live here. :-)

*sigh* And to think a short while ago it would have been hugs for all. Those non-huggers sure spoiled things. :-)

Nah to be honest I had often used that even before some people spoke up against the hugging since I was not sure if everyone was comfortable about it :-)

moonshineshadow: It is not like I am really against it, if people are happy with it, I don't care. But for me my "Ma" was always my "Ma" since even before I knew English and it will not change :D

EndreWhiteMane: Haven't heard the word Ma in ages. When I was young it was considered impolite because it was usually spoken in a whiny voice when you were complaining about something.
Oh Maaaaaaaaa! I don't WANT to clean my room! :-)
Pa was also used for Father and was more acceptable but it was usually pronounced 'paw'. ;)

tinyE: I use, "Yes Dominatrix!"

EndreWhiteMane: Another brief glimpse into the sordid life of tinyE. :-)
I think you mean sordid imagination. If any of you were to hang out with me in real life you'd shit. I never look anyone in the eye and I rarely if ever talk. :D

I know, it seems the whole hugging thing has become another quirky element of this thread. :-)

No wonder you don't get the extra stiletto heel treatment, no matter how many times you beg.

It's "Yes, Mistress." ;)

But just think how dull the place would be if we were all sane. :-)

It seems Crow go the 13,000 post a few pages back. We seem to be well on our way for the 20,000th post.

Probably not. I spend most of my time talking here, not offline. I'm not big on social events, I hardly ever use a phone.
This is what works.

You sound like me a bit. =)

Edit: Fun time to notice but I'm also trying to get 2 hours of sleep. Good luck to you with that also.

I think just for fun I'm going to archive this thread so we never lose it and start working on a "Highlights' document.
I think it would be a lot of fun to see some of the 'phases' we have gone through here. :-)
Well I had better try and get some sleep. I need to be up in three hours for work and I have a long hard day ahead. I hope you all enjoy what's left of your evening and that you all sleep well when you decide to go to bed.

*goodnight hugs for those who want them*
