adaliabooks: Broken puzzles (or anything I suppose) suck, you would think someone might have spotted that at some point and it would be fixed...
Bugs on the other hand can occasionally be quite funny :)
*May contain spoilers for Montague's Mount, please don't read if you intend to play the game.* Well that's Montague's Mount finished. It took me 3 hours 8 minutes, according to the game statistics. Overall, due to some things I discovered (see edit), I would say 2 stars for me.
I'm in two minds about the game. If it was just on the gameplay, I would say 2 star, but I liked the story mostly and I think this brings it up to a 2.5 star. The puzzles to begin with were okay, a little far fetched but okay. Then towards the end they get so silly (like a hidden lock on a basic country gate that is triggered remotely from a special number puzzle further down the beach, or candles moving a locking mechanism). The story was okay, but I thought the ending was rather rubbish, and not finished. Clearly there was meant to be a sequel, but without the sequel to complete the story, I can't really recommend it. Perhaps if the ending had been better, then it would be worth it. But for me personally, I would give it a miss unless you can get it cheap from a bundle.
Edit: Also, the whole based on a True Story is mostly just there to make it seem more emotional. It turns out that the only thing it is based on is the creator feeling isolated when he moved to Ireland from England. There does not seem to be any evidence that any of the actually story is based on anything true. Personally, I think this is a bit of a jerk thing to do to make your game sound more emotional. In fact, I am knocking my rating back to 2 becasue of that, as I feel it is uncalled for to try to trick people to be more interested in the game.
Here is a extract from an interview with the developer:
"Yeah it’s one of those things like in cinema where there is a certain amount of artistic license used with a statement like that, but it’s based on me really. I’m originally from the UK, and I moved over to Ireland probably about 7 or 8 years ago, so coming over was a bit like a fish out of water scenario. The way of life here is so much slower than the cities of England, and although I wouldn’t say it’s strictly semi-autobiographical, there is a lot of me in the story.
In the game, every object you see is described in Irish, and I added that to convey the feeling of alienation. The narration is the player’s default language but the in-game objects descriptions are in Gaelic, with a very small subtitle, and I did that the heighten that emotion and force the player to read what is actually going on.
Getting back to your question, it’s one of those stories that could happen anywhere but it is loosely based on parts of my life."
