I've never really played grand strategy games. I've mostly been into small-scale strategy games.
If I were to ever give it a try, what game(s) would be best for a newbie like me?
No idea. I know, I'm very helpful. :-)

I have never played any of them, the only game similar to them I have played is the first few Total War games, up to Medieval 2 Total War.

Which era interests you the most? Medieval, Pax Britannica, World War 2?

ddickinson: I end up getting distracted a lot while playing games, especially if I am also reading a good book at the same time. I will end up leaving the game to go read some more of the book. Plus I have been working so much since Christmas that with the little free time I had I spent it doing more important things, and reading some more books. Luckily I am now getting a bit more free time so I can start enjoying some games.
That is the reason I am playing Pharao at the moment. There are waiting times where I do not really need to do anything just waiting for money generation or for completing a monument building. Ideal breaks to read in between :D

I'm glad you like the look of the games. History is my number one passion, and the games do look nice, but for the moment they are not high enough on my list for me to pick them up. Maybe once I have played some of the games I already own then I might pick them up when on sale again. Probably during the next Winter sale.

As for guessing where you are from, using the names on the screenshot. I will go with Naxos?

I do that kind of thing with strategy games, while I am waiting for resources to be gathered and other things. I have been picking games at random to play, and so only few of them are games that give me the spare time to read. So I just end up leaving the game and reading instead. But I am getting there, slowly but surly.

I hope you have a nice time with your friends at the restaurant. I bet the kids looks so cure all dressed up.

Yes! That's where I come from indeed! :D You win! (Um, I have no clue what you should win though...)
And this small guessing quiz helped me decide I prefer Victoria rather than Europe Universalis atm-at Victoria I can at least play as Greece and liberate Crete (Yay! :D), while during the timeframe of Europa Universalis mainland Greece is under the Ottomans and Crete under the Venetians (and the Ottomans after the mid-17th century, as Crete is conquered then by the Ottomans)...

Stilton: dd, I hope I'm not one of the group you referred to yesterday who are too rough, tough and macho to be into the 'huggy' thing. My concern is, being a colossal brute of immense strength, I'd fear if I hugged you I might break your ribs, or worse still, make you fart. I know ladies don't do such things, but you'd have no choice if I gave you the old Viking squeeze-machine. I've had full grown grizzly bears run away screaming as soon as I've taken my hands out of my pockets, so its not to be trifled with, believe me.

That sounds like a good choice. It is always fun to play a game that you can relate to more and that features your country. I am sure you will have lots of fun liberating Crete.
