Tarm: I crave Civilization 4 on GOG! It was the last one in the natural evolution of the Civilization game series.
The fifth went another way with bling and streamlining before gameplay and I care not for that.

Matewis: What I miss most are the wonder videos :P
I'm still cranky about the removal of Palace videos. :/

Everybody seems to miss the wonder videos and me included. :)
Also bring back Armies so I can forget about this 1UPT nonsense clogging up the map!

You mean the ones they had until Civ 3 (included)?! Yeah, that and the throne room/palace.

Oh yes, and while we're at it, how about the city view? Civ3 was the last one that had it (and the palace view come to think of it) and it looked pretty damn cool. Imagine an updated one that is actually animated, with cars on the road, planes landing at the airport etc.

The 1UPT does make combat more interesting, but it clogs up the map too fast and doesn't make any sense how archers can shoot over entire rivers. What I'd like to see is a 2/3UPT thing where you would place for example swordsmen and crossbowmen in the same tile, with the crossbowmen shooting ahead of the swordsmen charging when you order the combined unit to attack another tile.

Civ 4 had wonder videos, and they were damned excellent. No palace though, that ended with 3

Lajciak: It is good to see Take2 Interactive games appear on GoG. Does this mean the Civilization series is coming to GoG? I hope so! Do we have any news on this?
We haven't. It may come. I hope so. (Although I used the No-CD patches for Civ 3/ Civ 4 all the time, so I will not feel much improvement anyway.)

Oooh city view! Thanks for reminding me. Yeah that one was a brilliant feature. :)

1UPT doesn't make anything interesting or better for that matter. It's a feature to make combat simpler and easier to understand so mainstream gamers can understand it. Civilization 5 was successful in its mission. Even console gamers (Strategy games are severely lacking on consoles so they're not used to them.) can understand it.

Ah, they were so good :')
I understand why they had to go, though.

Ah yes, that was nice too.

Civ4 has patches that are removing DRM from the game and expansions. If you have the disc versions, you can still find those patches. So basically, Civ4 would not be to hard to be brought on GOG.

blotunga: Until then we have Call to Power 2 which with the Apolyton mod is pretty good imho.
Last time I checked the Apolyton mod when applied to the GOG version makes the music not work.

Thanks for the link, that was a very interesting read :)
It's interesting to note that he feels that on the whole Civ5's combat mechanics are better than the previous civ games. The biggest issue it seems for him is the congestion that inevitably results. That's one issue I have with it, but my biggest gripe is that compared to Civ4's stacks, large scale warfare doesn't feel as realistic.
So they are bringing back stacks with ATG, but of limited size, determined by what the tile can support. That's great! What would be cool is if an individual unit's performance is affected by the other units presence in the tile, or even if 2 or more can attack together. We'll see I guess. ATG looks absolutely delicious!

By the way, there is one place where I think 1UPT works pretty well : the scenarios. Especially because the scale is dramatically reduced, both dimension wise and time wise, so that 1UPT starts to make a bit more sense. My favorite is Scramble for Africa, where it's particularly delightful to have the Boers chase the English back out to sea :D
I never really gave the scenarios any thought, thinking they were stupid, but after a bout of boredom I checked them out in Civ4 and was surprised to find that they were sometimes even more fun than the main game itself.

Yeah, it would've been too big a task to create dozens of videos of an acceptable quality compared to what the standard had become :(

I have to check when I get home, I have it installed there. It might be that you're right, but because I rarely pay attention to game music, I haven't noticed.

Well yeah, but not having music is a pretty big strike against the mod, you'd think they could fix it considering that CoP2 has it's source code available (I think)

There is a DRM-Free retail version of IV too. If I'm not mistaken, it's the North American one.
Civilization Chronicles also had Civ4 (without the expansions, which weren't out at the time) DRM free. That was also the Mastertronic's Civilization IV: Complete Edition (the one that had the new Colonization included), also DRM-free.

The Civ4 Complete physical version is DRM free. It'll run without Steam and even without the CD in the drive.
