Last year was a very challenging time for all of us due to the ongoing global pandemic. Since March 2020, our team continues to work remotely from homes, which is not always easy. Having that in mind, we’re even more proud and happy to share these facts and numbers with you.

Leroux: It seems to me like they got those statistics from this survey
Huh, you'd think that such a survey would be the biggest, most obvious thing on the front page, and also pointed out very visibly on the forums. Guess not. Thanks for pointing it out. And good thing they sorted out that issue... But other questions/answers are quite biased anyway.
And not seeing a general comment place, to be able to say Go back to your values! Why is it even a question now whether a game that exists on GOG may have single player elements locked behind DRM(/connection/client) requirements? Or whether the plain, normal, offline installers are on par with the Galaxy ones? And, you know, remember that time when you had two clear, specific, values, the second being that "little" thing about pricing? And when you wanted to change the industry, not follow it for the sake of constant growth and mass appeal?
avatar
ssling: Maybe people abusing the system, as unlike on Steam and others you can still keep the game after refund? Although I don't know why would anyone bother instead of just pirate it.
Can be certain to not get undesirable "bonuses" this way? Can make a statement which is more likely to be heard, as in if a company needs to refund you because you're unhappy, they're more likely to actually listen to your reasons? Or just want to stick it to GOG, since transactions imply some costs on the store's part, so a full refund means some loss actually, not zero?

Great. Now invest some of that doubled revenue into better forum software. You desperately need it! WE desperately need it!
"73% of users prefer mostly single-player, role-playing and story-driven games." - Oh. I'm a statistic! xD

Data is beautiful. Love this kind of stuff. Thanks for sharing! Growth is a welcome blessing during a pandemic. Not all are so lucky. Glad GOG is doing better than I had imagined. ;) Am surprised by the amount of free stuff claimed here.

Best feedback I can give: Listen to the needs of your community! It's a great way to stand out from the competition. This is how loyal bonds are strengthened. And in turn, more future growth!

FoxTwo: See, 73% prefer SINGLE PLAYER, STORY-DRIVEN GAMES.

That's what I have been saying since the mid-1990s :p

KingofGnG: And remember, folks: cloud is the future, lol.
They're not all that related, nor was the original comment actually true. GOG's playerbase is not the majority, and it should be obvious with all the popularity of games like Minecraft, Among Us, etc, that people still prefer multiplayer experiences. However, the cloud thing is more on point, just unfortunately unrelated. I think the article's a little overly pessimistic, but i think to some degree the cloud is forever here to stay. Virtual servers are how things like this inevitably work these days, and that future is here, but the whole idea of streaming games isn't going to work. Meanwhile, streaming an IDE does work (especially if it's VIM). People just need to learn to see what technology actually will work for what purpose. Cloud is like a Japanese longsword, and things like photo and file preservation is like cheese, while things like gaming are tanks, while tasks like distributed computing are like people. Now, ask yourself what things you would prefer this tool for cutting. You don't want to try cutting block of cheese with an expensive and unweildy kitchen knife that's longer than your arm, right? You also don't want to go against a tank wielding a melee weapon made of the same materials as the tank. However, dealing with a squishy foe with a long sword who might also have a weapon of some kind isn't unreasonable.

TZODnmr2k5: I know I'm not the only one to say this... Please GoG more JRPGs, please!

Sure I do love my WRPGs but I and others have a real soft spot for JRPGs, for me I started out on consoles and JRPGs from the PlayStation era really showed that RPGs were no longer a niche market in the u.s., as before the PS1 we were looking at 1-2 JRPGs (Forget about WRPGs they were much rarer) every 1-2 years!

Anyone else remembers when the secret of mana 2 (3 in Japan) 7th saga 2 and a few others was canceled due to there "not being a market for the u.s.?" Sony too was under that mantra, but thank fuck they did a 180 on that bullshit idea!

So to the blue texts how about releasing more JRPGs as the full series for Atelier, wizardry, the tales series and Neptuna?

Naturally, we love our WRPGs as well, but more JRPGs, please; otherwise, keep up the excellent work I hope to see GoG meet steam's position or at least become second place if not first! <=(Pipe dream I know, but still...)

avatar
polecat1: Thank you GOG!
I am especially grateful for the release of Horizon Zero Dawn.
Hopefully more AAA titles will follow.
Maybe Nier Automata, Mirror's Edge Catalyst or Unravel. ;)
avatar
TZODnmr2k5: ...And the entire tomb raider re-booted trilogy!

EDIT Added new games and context...
May i suggest this?

This is a site that sells mostly DRM-free games, and I did a custom search for you (on the R18 side, so i could get the R16 games included) on this site for turn-based JRPGs that are in english. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the sight, this means only 25 results (alot more if you include adult results, i assure you), but this might sate your thirst. There's also a DRM-free game there that is also being sold on steam, and they are promising an english translation, soon, that's a mix of ARPG and turn-based RPG at the same time: https://www.dlsite.com/maniax/work/=/product_id/RJ290851.html
It's interesting to scroll though this thread and see how many of you are from the woodwork.

Some thoughts:
• The version of MojoSetup that GOG uses & the forum software are both 10+ years out of date. This is not a good impression. Especially with all the bugs & misfeatures we've discovered over the years; a lack of emoji support alone is strange.
• The requirement to work in Poland is shortsighted at best, and insane at worst; the types of jobs that GOG is asking for do not require physical presence. Swallow that national pride and deal with it.
• Someone in the management of GOG seems to have an unhealthy obsession with "Agile". Make sure they're not drinking marketing kool-aid. (There are saner & better development flows.)
• I'm not looking for much in terms of Linux support. But I am asking that the standard surpass the effort that Steam puts into the platform.
• The reputation system on the forums has been a pointless eyesore of a feature for the longest time, and I'm not sure why it's kept around.
• Preventing spambots would be as simple as requiring a valid purchase on account. Why this, or some other solution to the spambots hasn't been implimented, leaves me utterly baffled.
I know it's due to Germany, but I presume an 18+ verification system that would sate the problem wouldn't be that hard to dev for. Think about it.
• Now that Humble Bundle is as good as dead, perhaps considerations might be taken in uplifting titles from Itch.Io? I know there are several (Jimmy & The Pulsating Mass, for example.)
• New blood helps keep us cynics from getting too edgy. Are there easy inroads or is the actual forum about as well hidden as the individual game forums?
• Ratings being number/star based leaves a sour taste; even if I had to though and re-rate all the products I've rated, I'd rather prefer :)/:(/:| over the current system.

mqstout: Missing possibly the most important metric:
"Games on GOG with DRM" and the increasing numbers. :(
avatar
Dark_art_: Not a single mention of DRM on the page.
avatar
ReynardFox: Also where's the percentage of games with DRM statistic? That's been rising too you know.
There are 10 single-player games that have DRM and most of them are cosmetic. If you buy those games, there's nothing stopping you from completing them. For multiplayer, there are 49 games limiting players. You can view them here: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/drm_on_gog_list_of_singleplayer_games_with_drm/page1

avatar
blotunga: Well, if it was 10 users and now there are 80 users, it's +800% :)
No, it'd be 10 +800% = 90 users

|final - initial| / initial * 100% = % change

In your example, going from 10 to 80 users is +700% change.

avatar
phaolo: - Gog's increased revenue is surely caused by CP2077's hype and it will drop next year.
avatar
BranjoHello: CP2077 driven data but hey, numbers going up are numbers going up, nobody can deny that.
These stats are based on GOG.com alone. CP2077, Witcher 1-3, and Gwent are part of CDPR's assets highlighted in the annual report (p.30-36): https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/wp-content/uploads-en/2021/04/consolidated-financial-statement-of-the-cd-projekt-group-for-2020.pdf

I guess the increase in users, new users, and Galaxy users might be driven by CP2077, but the other stats mainly pertain to GOG.com users only.

avatar
Sok4R: That's all nice, but since most numbers are relativ (+x%), they don't say anything meaningful. Like the Pornhub statistics blog, they use the same technique. Posting numbers without the number they relate to.
avatar
Swedrami: Echoing the request for concrete numbers to put on the "many messages from gamers" and the downloads of the backup offline installers explicitly through the gog.com website.
avatar
lazydog: How exactly was this report compiled and on what numbers?
Some of those numbers are from the annual report. All of this info is available on the Investors webpage and reports; you just have to look through them: https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/investors/result-center/

https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/wp-content/uploads-en/2021/04/management-board-report-on-the-activities-of-the-cd-projekt-group-and-cdc-projekt-sa-in-2020.pdf

avatar
Ancient-Red-Dragon: Generalized percentages are highly useless.

- What is GOG's amount of profit in USD in 2020?
GOG trades on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, not NYSE. So that's why you don't see USD.

1 PLN = 0.257061 PLN
Sales revenues (2020): 343,748,000 PLN = $88.4M USD
Net profit (2020): 20,655,000 PLN = $5.31M USD
Net profit %: $5.31M USD / $88.4M USD * 100% = 6%

The 6% is consistent with the same figure on p.108 in this report: https://www.cdprojekt.com/en/wp-content/uploads-en/2021/04/management-board-report-on-the-activities-of-the-cd-projekt-group-and-cdc-projekt-sa-in-2020.pdf

- What, exactly, is the honest & real reason why Devotion was banned from GOG?
Probably to protect their CP2077 sales in China. According to this report, 20.2% of their sales came from Asia. On page 48, China represents 52% of Asia and Pacific's video game market. Asia and Pacific representing 48% of the global market and are projected to grow in the future.

avatar
yogsloth: Man, those 6% of gamers from Asia really hold a lot of influence.
That 6% was only for GOG.com. I speculate CDPG is appeasing either the Chinese demographic buying their CDPR games or was an investment because the Asian global video game market is projected to grow further seeing as how they were noted for having 17.5% y/y increase and how 1.5 billion Asian people represent 54% of the global gaming market's population.

avatar
W3irdN3rd: * Customer support: 93% customer satisfaction rate.
A staff member already said that 93% was based on surveys they sent after resolving people's support tickets.

avatar
Ice_Mage: No wonder you're boasting such a high satisfaction rate: you simply don't count people whose issues aren't resolved.
It's random. Out of the 5 refunds I requested last year, I only received one survey. Trying to emulate and maintaining randomness in your surveys is the next best way to understand trends about your population when it's impossible to receive feedback from every single member and encounter and to process all of them to understand the population.

avatar
Leroux: Indeed, you're right. But do people put their actual birth date in there? I know I didn't. If that's what the stats are based on, I would trust them even less.
Yes, some people do. You can also show conditional data too (i.e., out of the people who did put in their birth date, these are the breakdowns of their ages).

EDIT: percentage difference formula, net profit % calculation, clarity.

Amazing, congrats GOG! ^_^
avatar
zlaywal: Asia only contribute 6% of the sales, wonder why?
avatar
pearnon: Goes to show the folly of bending over backwards due to "many messages from gamers".
Well, GWENT was excluded, and possibly everything they intended to milk out of CP multiplayer in the coming years ;-)

emter_pl: And yes, we count Russia under Europe.
What if (just if) there's some GOG fellow from Vladivostok? I mean the guy can drive for like 30m and go to... Asia.
Just sayin' ;P

For we are many. I was diggin' through some old games and recently tried Garry's Mod (after a decade, said there the last played it in 2011, no joke there) and 14min later here I am playin' Demonicon.

More than 75% of the Russians live in the European part. I guess for a store that's more interesting than miles and miles of tundra.
