carnival73: The first Carmageddon and expansion are now free but those cheeky monkies did a good job of ridding the net of ISO's for part 2 and replacing it with a heavily ripped copy.
I'm just hoping the reasoning for that is not because they're afraid that Reincarnation will be too similar to 2 and they don't want people burning themselves out on 2 before Reincarnation comes along.
And BTW - Weren't the first two on GOG and why are they no longer on here anymore?
DodoGeo: First game is free?
Any official info or links on that?
He's talking complete bollocks and flies in the face of all current information and sanity - to put it nicely.
First two were never and have never been free (legally which is all we're concerned with here) - and neither have ever been on GOG.
On the Carmageddon forums there's a fairly active group who have worked together, carried out fan patches etc to get the first two games working on WinXP/W7 (the third game doesn't exist... similar to how there's no Matrix sequels or Star Wars prequels...) and when asked about getting the first two for sale again their position has been:
RPS: Is there any scope to re-release the original games too, or is that tied up in whatever’s left of SCI?
Neil Barnden: We go round and round with the discussion on this one. We do own everything, so if we want to we can – we absolutely own the rights to all the previous code, even the stuff that’s Carmageddon-related that we didn’t work on ourselves. It’s all ours. But I think because it’s so easy to go online and find a copy of Carmageddon from a warez site or whatever, it doesn’t feel to us like there’d be an awful lot of point in just rereleasing the originals. We had talked about it, but on our website now we’ve got guys talking about how to get it running on Windows 7, various patches which make it look nicer and high-res, so rather than try and shut them down and go after the people distributing the game, we just thought we’ve got to embrace that and let ‘em have it. They can do with it what they want, because there’s been a really loyal, core modding community who’ve continued to put stuff out for the games. They’re still going.

Since the start of the kickstarter there has been a vocal group (of which I am a part) who would like the originals legitimately available - and if Stainless need to raise some money to finish C:R we pointed out that Carma1&2 on GOG would be a very viable way of raising funds separate and in addition to the kickstarter.
If you read the comments from Stainless I have quoted you will see the fact that they have commented on looking to find a way to make the old games supported on modern systems and specifically on the last communication Stainless made publicly on the comments page "About GOG: more soon" (slight paraphrase... exact quote in my previous postings).
Based on that very clear evidence I call total BS on carnival73's claim that "the first carmageddon and expansion are now free" and about "they don't want people burning themselves out on 2 before Reincarnation comes along" as it bears no resemblance to any of their comments up to this point in time.
