True. If I were german I would think seriously not to contribute to this project.

I'd hold out for a DRM-free version. I don't see why that would be out of the question for a game that is primarily single player.

Even with that... Many DRM free games sold in GOG need codes for the multiplayer mode, like Sacrifice and UT.

Well yeah, but will it even have multiplayer? I guess that will depend on their budget. Which doesn't look right now like it's going to be too small.

Multiplayer has been confirmed - including 'offline multiplayer' .. ie local LAN play with no internet connection.

Fox and Hounds mode confirmed as is a 'Be a Ped' mode where you have to survive as a pedestrian...

Primarily single-player? Multiiplayer is huge! So much fun!

This game will have large amount of replay value and fun from the multiplayer ;)

Navagon: It's possibly the case, but it doesn't really answer the question. I really would appreciate more clarity when it comes to Kickstarter projects.

In any case I asked them directly. Naturally I want to know what's going on before I cough up any hard earned money. Even if this is another of my childhood / adolescent favourites being resurrected here.

jimbob0i0: In case you missed it they have a US law firm contracted anyway to handle negotiations and legal issues over there for publishing their games in the US....

That law firm set them up a holding company registered in the US to act as the kickstart sponsor and to receive the kickstart money once the target is met and kickstarter send them the money... then they'll transfer this over the their UK accounts I guess for them to work with.

So now that the path of the money is clear and definitely going to them for this project - you'll pledge yeah? ;)

romulus16: $350 to get a retail box ..... :/

jimbob0i0: $150 now for a retail box - and it includes the 4 digital copies alongside the retail and that card game at $100 ..... trying to convince myself not to up from $50 or my missus will go nuts ;)
I would hug you if I could :D And hmmm may get it and sell the keys :3
The first Carmageddon and expansion are now free but those cheeky monkies did a good job of ridding the net of ISO's for part 2 and replacing it with a heavily ripped copy.

I'm just hoping the reasoning for that is not because they're afraid that Reincarnation will be too similar to 2 and they don't want people burning themselves out on 2 before Reincarnation comes along.

And BTW - Weren't the first two on GOG and why are they no longer on here anymore?

First game is free?
Any official info or links on that?

He's talking complete bollocks and flies in the face of all current information and sanity - to put it nicely.

First two were never and have never been free (legally which is all we're concerned with here) - and neither have ever been on GOG.

On the Carmageddon forums there's a fairly active group who have worked together, carried out fan patches etc to get the first two games working on WinXP/W7 (the third game doesn't exist... similar to how there's no Matrix sequels or Star Wars prequels...) and when asked about getting the first two for sale again their position has been:
RPS: Is there any scope to re-release the original games too, or is that tied up in whatever’s left of SCI?

Neil Barnden: We go round and round with the discussion on this one. We do own everything, so if we want to we can – we absolutely own the rights to all the previous code, even the stuff that’s Carmageddon-related that we didn’t work on ourselves. It’s all ours. But I think because it’s so easy to go online and find a copy of Carmageddon from a warez site or whatever, it doesn’t feel to us like there’d be an awful lot of point in just rereleasing the originals. We had talked about it, but on our website now we’ve got guys talking about how to get it running on Windows 7, various patches which make it look nicer and high-res, so rather than try and shut them down and go after the people distributing the game, we just thought we’ve got to embrace that and let ‘em have it. They can do with it what they want, because there’s been a really loyal, core modding community who’ve continued to put stuff out for the games. They’re still going.

Since the start of the kickstarter there has been a vocal group (of which I am a part) who would like the originals legitimately available - and if Stainless need to raise some money to finish C:R we pointed out that Carma1&2 on GOG would be a very viable way of raising funds separate and in addition to the kickstarter.

If you read the comments from Stainless I have quoted you will see the fact that they have commented on looking to find a way to make the old games supported on modern systems and specifically on the last communication Stainless made publicly on the comments page "About GOG: more soon" (slight paraphrase... exact quote in my previous postings).

Based on that very clear evidence I call total BS on carnival73's claim that "the first carmageddon and expansion are now free" and about "they don't want people burning themselves out on 2 before Reincarnation comes along" as it bears no resemblance to any of their comments up to this point in time.
Just as I thought, but on a positive note they own all the rights and the code to everything.
It would be cool to play the first one and Splatter Pack.
Here's an excerpt from the recently updated FAQ.

"Will there be a non-Steam version?
We'll be using Steamworks for our online services on PC, so we require Steam. Steam is lovely!"

Ouch...
The good news is, GOG versions of C1&2 seem likely.

"Will you make the originals work on current hardware and available to buy?
Stay tuned!"

I may be shooting myself in the foot posting this (because a lot of you guys are WAY more funny than I am), but here goes.

Stainless is having a competition, for funny quotes/phrases/sayings, to put on the kickstarter page.
Win 3, 2, or 1 Carmageddon t-shirt.

The whole Steam thing is an interesting one....

Since they have explicitly stated they'll be supporting LAN only (no internet connection) multiplayer they can't be using Steamworks for the netcode AFAIK... which means it's self written like in the old days.... which means that outside of achievements and friend lists they could potentially separate from there to sell elsewhere too (such as here, Desura, etc) .... and as shown by Alan Wake that specific stuff can always be disabled/removed...

One of the earlier set of responses they had was:
@ Mineo Geoffrey: We might not need to tie the boxed version to Steam. It could be that we’d make it optional. We’ll have to look into it further, and let you know.
So hopefully they might do a non-steam version at some point - and Feb 2013 is a long way off... at this point in time if they *can* port to Linux as well they'll have to do a non-steam version for that anyway....

At any rate they have said they will look into it and see what is feasible for them - so fingers crossed!

Hmm.....looking again it might be a demo

http://carmageddon.en.softonic.com/

Also, I think I'm getting GOG mixed up with Home of the Underdogs (it's one of those things I took note of in subliminal passing but never gave full attention - I'm constantly browsing game lists on many different sites).

EDIT: Ah...and I was confusing a MOD with the official expansion:

That looks very odd... claims to be carmageddon but the screenshots seem off...
First is carmageddon Max Damage/Die Anna selection screen from Carma1
Second is Carmageddon 2 with the nosebleed expansion/patch it looks like (has the Eagle II not the first Eagle in the screen shot... plus the feed back of 'Vlad is out for blood etc' was a C2 feature.... there is no opponent health or thought status in C1).
The last screenshot is the Eagle III from the sequel that doesn't exist ;)

There was a C2 demo though and this appears to be a C1 demo ....

Given that the link you had requires installing the 'Softonic Downloader' I didn't grab the file to compare....

Edit: HOTU is possibly feasible.... It is on there looking now it seems but just the first and not to download directly but rather just info about it... and HOTU just like Abandonia and so on are not strictly 'legal' ways of obtaining games ;)
