Yes, i'm talking about the Survival Horror game develpoed by Terminal Reality, released in 1999.

This is my favorite game in that genre (i've played Resident Evil 1, 2 & 3, Dino Crisis 1 & 2, and many others indie and more mainstream).
This game does NOT have a large Fear Factor (like Alan Wake or Slender does), but it has the GREATEST atmosphere i ever witnessed in a game and the most awesome protagonist in a game : Stranger, an anti-hero that's in it, only for the kill.
The game had 4 chapters that were put in order chronologically, but with no apparent conceptual bonds.
When you finished the last chapter, there was a cliffhanger, that promised a new game (others said movie), but still to this day it has never happened.

Much of the staff from Terminal Reality back then has been fired or quit and the company holds the rights to the name, as you can read in this -fairly old- interview :

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/terminalreality/interview.htm

There also was a guy named "Agent Heretic" that had made 4 maps for the game, now lost forever.

Anyway, since there's not a mod kit around for the game, and since it's more likely that a company of fans can do much more than a single crazed fan, what do you say we try to revive that game?

It's pretty akward, because the ones that made the game do not have the license and the company that owns it, seem to not give a fuck about it, or the genre.

We could try and convince them, that fans can fund its development through Kickstarter (it's been a while since i pledged there anyway).

If a team of indie developers would be interested, i believe there are many of us that would like to contribute, money and ideas for the creation of a new Nocturne game.

What do you guys say? Is that too much of wishful thinking?

(Do i really have to request the game being brought here, after all this? :p)

You forgot to mention that the game has mouse look and the ability to fire at two targets at once. Jill Sandwich never learned that.
Plus, the main character had a cameo in The Blair Witch Trilogy. Plus, GOG has Bloodrayne, which is built on Nocturne engine and borrowed the vampiric tits with blades character.
WAIT!

So that redhead is Svetlana Lupescu, the dhampir? I didn't know this!

Yes, everything you said is true (btw, who's Jill Sandwich?). That game was built on Demon Engine (created by one of the founders of Terminal Reality), but unfortunately it didn't become popular.
Stranger saved Ellspeth's ass at BWP: RP (the only game on the Blair Witch series created by TR).

But still, whatever Survival Horror i play, i will still miss the morbid cynicism of Stranger and the atmosphere of those games (both Nocturne and Blair Witch).

There is a wishlist entry for this awesome game :

http://www.gog.com/en/wishlist/games/nocturne

I have the original, managed to get it running but still not the best experience a few weeks back.

I REALLY hope that GOG manage to secure rights to work their wizardry on it and return it to the masses. I have only ever finished the first episode with the vampires, loved the town that you go through, very eerie.

Reason I only got through first episode is that when I bought it initially I only had a 4Gb hard drive so never installed the other episodes as it was a mess about. I did start the episode on the train the other week though and got killed seconds after taking control!

I thought, you said, you played Resident Evil 1 :)
iirc the game hates any windows after XP, so it would need serious patching.

A great game though, there used to be a really cool spookhouse forum a few years back, where you could get help running the game etc. but I dont have the address anymore.

I believe they said that Svetlana and Rayne are half-sisters. Also, the castle from Episode 1 of Nocturne and... chapter 3? of Bloodrayne are the same, with the same artefact.

I absolutely LOVED Nocturne, I remember when it first came out and nearly dropping a brick over it's 1GB install requirement (haha fancy that). I am actually looking at my original cd-rom copy over on my shelf as we speak. I would love to have a way to be able to play it again without going to Hell and back to get it to run.

haha, i totally forgot their names.
The thing i loved most about the game, apart from the gore, the dismemberfest, the characters and dialog, was the period that it was set. You really can't beat 20's and 30's. That's the reason i want this game back like hell. The period were you had the first Universal Horror movies, Lovecraft, mobsters etc.
There's no game like that in the survival horror genre.

Anyway, i see most people are not into the idea of creating a new one from scratch. I have few experience with map design (from the Hammer Source SDK kit), but i believe i'm better in realizing the maps rather than creating them. Still, we would need modellers, actors (Lynn Mathis - the voice of Stranger, unfortunately died in 2003. RIP) and a few programmers if we were to create our own engine.

By the way. Demon Engine (the Nocturne/Blair Witch Vol 1 and 2 Engine) was very suitable for Horror games. I really didn't mind that it was fixed, and you had limited visibility. I thought it added to the atmosphere of the game. But you'll need to have awesome skills in directing, otherwise you'd waste a lot of time trying different angles.

Anyway, does anyone know a good fresh (post 2005) engine suitable for Nocturne?

Best that we can realistically hope for is a GOG release. A complere from scratch rebuild is simply not in the cards.
Well the main reason for this thread was the idea of creating new chapters, dialogue, maps and characters for the game. I know it's kind of hard to do that under that name, since we don't have the rights for the name, but my hunger for new Nocturne stuff is abysmal. I would contribute with everything (well not EVERYTHING exactly) i got.

"Cameo" is understating it a bit. Elspeth Holliday was the main character in the first BW game, and both The Stranger and Svetlana make appearances. Blair Witch: Rustin Parr was, to all extents and purposes, a Nocturne sequel.

I actually played the Blair Witch games before I played Nocturne. For pre-rendered backgrounds, the graphics were incredible at the time, and they still don't look bad today. I'd personally love to see all four games on GOG (not sure how much the Blair Witch licence would scupper this, but still)

I still have this game on CD-Rom. I only played it for a few minutes before quitting, Why did i quit? The whole laser sights on my pistols in the 20's made me laugh. Maybe it's a good game but the aforementioned ruined the whole experience for me.

I think the whole laser sight thing was more to give you an idea where your bullets were going to go as the camera wouldnt always allow you to see where you were shooting and of course the whole firing two guns at different targets could be really confusing without it.

I suppose you could excuse it by saying that like MiB, they had advanced tech to deal with the paranormal.
