Book728: Charles, as I said in a message I just sent to Nicole, I copied the folder and subfolders to the desktop last night. It was the only place out of the choices I had to copy to. I am not sure I understand enough about what you say to do above (I half understand what to do, but not positive). I am not sure about the part if I can't find the saved game files after reinstalling the game. The folders where copies of the original files are at the moment is on the desktop but they are not the originals. I need to find somewhere to copy the 4 originals..
What you should do:
- look at the attached picture - this is the folder you should copy; store the copy on your desktop
You have backed up your saves now, no matter what happens, you'll be fine
- If you're not sure you can remember where you got the folder from, maybe write that path down somewhere? (As Charles said, in Win 7 it should be C: -> User -> ( User Name ) -> AppData -> LocalLow -> Red Thread Games -> Dreamfall Chapters )
- Next, uninstall the game
- You will be asked "Do you really want to delete the game?" - yes
"Do you want to keep your save games?" - yes
- After the game is uninstalled, install it again (version 5.4.1, that you have downloaded)
- start the game, look if your save games are still there
if yes) you can delete the copy you have sitting on your desktop now since you won't need it anymore
if no) copy the save folder sitting on the desktop, paste to it the location you got it from ( C: -> User -> ( User Name ) -> AppData -> LocalLow -> Red Thread Games

I now understand what you mean above, and have things the way you say, but it's probably too late because another problem has come up which I don't think I can solve. When I tried to uninstall the game. I got an error saying "Message file C:\Dreamfll.Dec.6/16 Dreamfall Chapters\unins001, msg is missing. Please correct problem or obtain a new copy of the program". I think what happened was my present Dreamfall chapters game somehow got mixed up with a previous Dreamfall chapters version which I should have deleted when I finished it. Whatever the case, its messed up now. I don't see any solution if there is any.

Even if I was now able to uninstall the Dreamfall chapters game I've played till the end of Book 4, it may not work. I would have to delete every reference to Dreamfall chapters on my computer and don't know if that can be done.
If I downloaded a fresh copy of the game from Gog, would I be able to play that game by starting over from the start of the game? Probably not.

Have you tried uninstalling the game via Control Panel? That might still work...
Otherwise, you could try manually deleting the game files (for me that would be in C:\GOG Games\Dreamfall Chapters).
Since you made a copy of your save files, you can always try to get them back - they won't go missing or anything.
You only need to download the files from Gog once - there's no need to download them several times.
Downloading =/=installing ;) This does not work like it does on Steam - you download the installer (once), you can use it to install the game as many times as you wish...

I tried uninstalling the game via control panel and that is when I got an error and wasn't able to uninstall the game. I finally used Revouninstall and got rid of Dreamfall chapters from the Uninstall list, but that didn't help. I tried a lot of things and I think I've FINALLY made some progress. I was almost ready to give up but always thought I will try one more thing. Thanks to you and other people here who gave me their input, I've learned a lot of new things which is always worth while..

I deleted all versions of Dreamfall chapters setup files by their date from "Downloads" where I usually put downloaded files from Gog.com. I deleted versions of Dreamfall chapters from 2015 and 2016 which I had played before. I also deleted 2017 version which was the one I was using at present, but that version ended in Book 4 and I was missing Book 5 and that was the subject of my original message here.

Then I downloaded the newest version of Dreamfall chapters from Gog.com which was Part 1 to part 4 of version 5.4.1 - I didn't download any patches.I also left the saved games from the game I was playing which I left short cuts on desktop, and one other place I think.

After the fresh game was downloaded (I just use my browser to download games, I don't know how to use Gog downloader which I think you asked me before) - then when I clicked on Setup of the new game I downloaded, the screen came up with "Book 5" on the top of the menu that is displayed on the game so I clicked on that, and Book 5 started up. I had expected the game to start on Book 1 since I downloaded all the parts of the game as if starting over from the beginning, but I did not expect to see Book 5 as the start up. I left the saved games in the game I was playing before I deleted all the old Dreamfall chapters games - was that how the fresh game I just downloaded yesterday came up with Book 5? By the time I had tried so many different things trying to get Book 5, I knew exactly where the saved games were you told me and still do.

Now when I finish game 5 and if I wanted to start the game over, would I need to delete the old saved games from the new game I am presently playing in order to start at Book 1?

P.S. Ive never used Gog installer. I just used my browser IE 11, so I think I would have to download a game more than once if I deleted the entire game and wanted to start the game over. .

Hey, glad to hear you got it to work :)

Yes. Because you left your old savegames intact, after the fresh install the game "knew where to look". It checked for saves, found them, and bumped you to the beginning of Book 5.

I haven't actually finished Dreamfall, so you might need another user's input, but it's very, very unlikely that will be necessary.
Once you get to the end, the game should offer you an option like "start new game", which will then automatically overwrite (meaning: it will delete the old savegame info and replace it with the new information) your save without you having to do anything else.
It would be another matter if you wanted to keep your old savegame for whatever reason. If you wanted to do that, you'd have to do exactly as before - make a copy of the savegame folder and store it somewhere else (desktop, for example, or a separate folder in documents etc).

There's really no need to learn about Gog installer if the browser download works well for you. Gog is slowly dropping support for the downloader, anyway. I was merely assuming your download might have been corrupt (it has happened to me once or twice while using the browser to download).
The browser (like the downloader) will still download the actual files to some place (for me, it's users>username>downloads), so if those files are not broken and you haven't manually deleted them, you can always use them to reinstall the game. If you did delete them, then yes, you'll have to download them again for installing.
Those two work independently of one another: you download the installer, the installer installs the game ;) The game can then be played and doesn't need the installer at all anymore. Thus, you can delete either of those (game or installer) and the other one will still be functional.

That's what I thought.

I found out what happens after I finished Book 5. The next time I clicked on "Dreamfall chapters", when I clicked on "New game" instead of my usual "Continue" on the menu, it listed Games 1 to 5 so if I wanted to, I could start the game from Book One. But to start fresh with no saves, I would have to delete all the saves I used for Book 5.

I see you are playing Dreamfall chapters. I thought it was a good game.in general. But as with many games, I found some parts I liked better than others.

The browser is quite slow and I don't have a high usage amount, but gets there eventually, but I use it because I at least know how it works. Thanks for your and others input.
