Eight days ago, The Battle for Wesnoth was put on Steam Greenlight. Four days later, it has already been greenlit.
1.14 in next year is scheduled to be the first release of Wesnoth to support both traditional Sourceforge-Installer as well as a Steam-Version. (probably with Auto-Updates and so on)

In my eyes there is still hope left for GOG to become the third option if they hurry up enough to get in contact with the wide-spread development team. As Wenoth is probably one of the greatest modern classics of Turn-Based-Strategy it would fit in really well in GOG Portfolio and could extend the small amount of Free Games on GOG. Get your hands on it, GOG-team!

Nice, but does this mean that BFW is both free and commercial? O_o
Looks good, voted for it.
I'd appreciate if you reciprocated with a vote for Krai Mira. It is very similar in look and setting to Fallouts 1 and 2.

It wouldn't be the first. I believe this http://store.steampowered.com/app/351700/ is identical to the free version

Same with Vulture for Nethack, it's probably a "The game is still free on our website, but you can buy it on Steam to help development if you want" deal.
What is Battle For Wesnoth? No links to the game or even a detailed description? Just "This game is greenlit ask for it here too!" My google works, but give me a reason to care beyond "This game got greenlit". So did literally THOUDSANDS of garbage games that don't deserve mention here.

It's a turn-based strategy game, taking place on a hex grid, with very minimal RPG elements (units can gain experience and level up, and can be carried to the next mission), that takes place in a fantasy setting.

I believe they said the Steam version will be free as well. Just that it will be available there as well (for people who think "Steam or bust").

Not seeing what the big news here? Is it now going to pay only? If so, not interested. If its free, why would I want it on some DRM platform, so not interested? Why would we need it on here, its free - no benefit to GOG - no real benefit to the public, get it from their website, or install the portable version on portable apps.

If your just touting steam as a platform then that's another matter.

Hmm, I see your concerns and I can't deny they appear valid. I'm not sure what would be the benefit for GOG (maybe attract some more people to join GOG via the game's official webpage advertising?) but I can already see the benefit for the developers of Battle for Wesnoth; their game will meet with massive popularity. Not everyone knows about it and, hopefully, the more gaming platforms hosting it, the more gamers will potentially get to know about it.

Extrapolate that further then. Whoa, big audience on Steam, well we could charge a little just for maintenance costs...

Nothing good ever comes or came from Steam.

It could be the way you describe, but "Wesnoth will remain completely free, and nothing will change for the people using the SourceForge version. We know this is something a lot of you have inquired about over the past few years. Sadly, it's taken us a long time to sort things out internally to enable this to happen, but we hope it was worth the wait." (source: official webpage, July's 23 post)

In any case, time will tell if you're right. Personally, I wouldn't mind to pay for it if that was the case (on GOG that is) since it's definitely worth it and I already played and had much fun with it. Sadly, you can't even donate (though there was this option long before I discovered it).

Wow.
Another of my favorite game (First one is Warsow).
I hope it will come here.
Also may be they are going to make commercial version HD (Like Cave Story) of going to add some extra content as paid DLC.

in case any new member is wondering in "Battle For Wesnoth" Wesnoth stands for West and North.

It was a big wish in the community for a long time. The major goals were to attract even more players, less download traffic on wesnoth.org, enabling easier updates and so on...
Why GOG should join in:
1st: The current freeware title lineup is weak.
2nd: If BattleForWesnoth Steam-Autoupdate will become reality, there would be no way to have this DRM-free without GOG joining in.
3rd: It fits the catalogue.

I guess others will find good reasons as well...
...concerning your fear of turning the game in non-freeware version: If this would ever happen, the game would fork up in a commercial and a non-commercial version.

Sorry, but i guessed that wesnoth.org would be enough. Anyways, OP-section is now edited to https://www.wesnoth.org so everybody can directly spot the link. :)
