jsidhu762: Does your arachnophobia kick in when you see them while playing something?
Nope. Though to be honest, I wouldn't go so far and say I suffer from arachnophobia at all. At worst, I feel a little at unease if the spider is too big (that is, in real life). But I have an aunt, which I would say, suffers from arachnophobia - she screams, jumps on chairs or countertops, and cries for some time, even after someone removed the spider.
It's kind of 'funny' to watch, but also makes you real glad for not being that way. A niece of me has a terrible phobia towards any buzzing insects that fly around her head. I'm not kidding: I daresay she'll die some day, because she'll panickly jump off the walkway, and in front of a car/bus/truck, just to "escape" a buzzing bee.
In contrast to my aunts reaction to spiders - watching my niece react to insects isn't even funny, anymore.
jsidhu762: Does the game's art style (realistic vs animated) matter?
Nope.
jsidhu762: Do semi-spider creatures trigger your fear? An example: driders from D&D, or the crypt fiends from Warcraft.
Nope.
jsidhu762: Does the size of the spider matter?
Nope. However, I once was jumpscared by a giant spider dropping from a cave ceiling right in front of me (
can't remember the game...maybe Skyrim?)
But in all honesty - I think that was more due to the "didn't see it coming", than to the size of that particular spider.
jsidhu762: The most reliable way to cure a phobia is through exposure.
Would you recommend someone plays a game with spiders in it as a type of therapy?
If anything, I would recommend such a person to play "Deadly Creatures", a game for the Wii.
In that you played some levels as a tarantula, others as a scorpion.
While I didn't like the scorpion levels too much - playing the tarantula was awesome.
And of course - whereas in all other games, the spiders are the enemy, trying to kill you (
which might not be the best way to counter someone's fear of spiders) - in "Deadly Creatures",
you were the spider...absolute amazing.
And it might give people with arachnophobia a new insight into these fascinating animals.
