tinyE: Has there ever been a game where you play as a spider?
Yes. It was called, surprisingly enough, Spider. It was pretty good and had some nice music by Barry Leitch.
I don't have a problem with spiders in video games. (Though, some people find it enough of an issue to make mods that change the spiders into other creatures; Legend of Grimrock got such a mod before the mod tools were released, and I hear Skyrim has it; even Daggerfall has such a mod.)

With that said, I am currently playing TES: Arena, and spiders are overused in the game. They are a common enemy in the earlier main quest dungeons, and are relatively weak (especially once you get past the Ice Fortress with some golems that are worth a lot of XP), and then several levels in the game puts you in a spider theme dungeon, after spiders are already old. (The game has a problem of overusing weaker enemies and waiting too long to give you stronger enemies to face; especially annoying for Sorcerers, who don't get to use their innate spell absorption ability enough until later. Also, you go way too long without any new enemies until the last couple of dungeons when you *finally* encounter Vampires and Liches.)

By the way, Spiderweb Software games do, indeed, have spiders, including some that cast spells at you, and some friendly talking spiders. Avadon 2 even has a spider boss, which I believe is accessible even in the demo.

I believe SaGa 2 has spiders, and you can put monsters into your party that can be turned into spiders with the right combination of meat. You can even make the main character a spider! (The main character isn't special in SaGa 2; they can be any of the game's races, and unlike in SaGa 1, have the same starting stats as a companion of the same species would have.)

I believe Pokemon has spiders, at least in the 2nd generation (there's a move called "Spider Web" in 2nd gen).

Sim Ant as I recall you could play as the spider and attack the red ants.

jsidhu762: Hello!

Spiders are probably the most common enemy in games. Does your arachnophobia kick in when you see them while playing something? Does the game's art style (realistic vs animated) matter? Do semi-spider creatures trigger your fear? An example of this would be the driders from D&D, or the crypt fiends from Warcraft. Does the size of the spider matter?

The most reliable way to cure a phobia is through exposure. Would you recommend someone plays a game with spiders in it as a type of therapy?
First off nice thread, though you might have used spiders as an example and made the thread about phobias in gaming in general(and asked for examples and how people treat them/view them)......just my two cents.

1st bit above: If the sounds are creepy enough, the spiders deadly enough, etc then I will be a bit tense fighting them.....though I do LOVE them as an enemy type(among a few others like the cliche zombies).

2nd bit above: I would recommend it as therapy or just to have fun and get to know and love something one dislikes or fears over time(as you said sort of)....well unless they were badly triggered by such and actually couldn't be around them(even in media) without being made "immobile with fear" or similar.

I LOVE spiders.
I refuse to kill them and I typically rip anyone who does a new asshole.

They are WAAAAY too important to fear and or destroy.
Charlotte in the movie of same name is fine and some others as well, but if they are huge and deadly then fuk em they gonna die or I gonna run away while pooping myself. o.0

Cyker: GOG, I've been virtually demanding you to get a several games into your catalogue recently, but I'd be also very happy if you never ever get Arachnophobia. It is technically Old, but definitely Not Good.
Eh,if the game is tied to the movie of the same name it might be fun to play in that setting.

"Hi" 'Helllllo'

I love em even in the older titles where they had sound/voices.

Baldurs Gate (expansion/2) and Neverwinter Nights have spider transforming as well.

jsidhu762: Does your arachnophobia kick in when you see them while playing something?
Nope. Though to be honest, I wouldn't go so far and say I suffer from arachnophobia at all. At worst, I feel a little at unease if the spider is too big (that is, in real life). But I have an aunt, which I would say, suffers from arachnophobia - she screams, jumps on chairs or countertops, and cries for some time, even after someone removed the spider.
It's kind of 'funny' to watch, but also makes you real glad for not being that way. A niece of me has a terrible phobia towards any buzzing insects that fly around her head. I'm not kidding: I daresay she'll die some day, because she'll panickly jump off the walkway, and in front of a car/bus/truck, just to "escape" a buzzing bee.
In contrast to my aunts reaction to spiders - watching my niece react to insects isn't even funny, anymore.

Nope. However, I once was jumpscared by a giant spider dropping from a cave ceiling right in front of me (can't remember the game...maybe Skyrim?)
But in all honesty - I think that was more due to the "didn't see it coming", than to the size of that particular spider.

If anything, I would recommend such a person to play "Deadly Creatures", a game for the Wii.
In that you played some levels as a tarantula, others as a scorpion.

While I didn't like the scorpion levels too much - playing the tarantula was awesome.

And of course - whereas in all other games, the spiders are the enemy, trying to kill you (which might not be the best way to counter someone's fear of spiders) - in "Deadly Creatures", you were the spider...absolute amazing.
And it might give people with arachnophobia a new insight into these fascinating animals.

No because I'm not a child who gets scared of fictional things.
I had a moment while playing Pillars of Eternity. I was strolling along with my merry band of heroes, kicking over and slaying spiders no problem. Then I entered a room and all of a sudden this giant honking spider the size of a greyhound bus came crawling from out the darkness. I promptly noped the fuck out of there.

Spiders are fictional? XD

Man, Peter Parker is gonna be pissed.
I hate spiders, I hate insects more though. I sometimes act comically when encountering buzzing flying insects (kinda like BreOl72's niece), I really hate that sound.
Yet I don't usually have problem when playing games, I feel disgust if they get too close, but I'm not going to panic because of something I know is not real. I'm playing Metro series now and enjoying burning cobwebs with spiders on it, it feels very zen.
I have severe arachnophobia stemming from trauma with a black widow when I was a small kid. I tend to kill anything that even remotly resembles a black widow around my home. I tend to leave other spiders alone or attempt to move them outside.

I don't have that reaction to spiders in videogames. I might think they're creepy but otherwise they're nothing special. I guess knowing they're not real helps.

I don't like spiders in my vicinity, but I'm actually kind of fascinated with them from a safe distance and especially in fiction. So I'm not triggered if they appear in movies and games, I actually love it! But then again, I'm not sure if it's considered arachnophobia already, if, like me, you just feel a slight unease or shiver, when a spider is close, and you're not exactly keen on touching them, but you can keep your cool and are not totally freaked out by them. So, up close in RL - ew! Behind the screen in fiction - cool! ;)

In addition to what's already been mentioned:

Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon (by the devs of Waking Mars, pretty good for a mobile game)
Along Came A Spider (I think it was on Desura and in some discontinued bundles, no idea where to get it now)
