My current upgrade plans:
* An SSD for my desktop (currently has 120GB SSD and 2TB HDD)
* An SSD for my small laptop, if it has a slot for one (currently has 64GB eMMC; according to some sources, supports M.2 SATA, but *not* M.2 PCIe)
* Once prices settle down, perhaps a discrete GPU (will be lower end)

If I do get a Ryzen 5000 series CPU, I'll probably wait for a G model to become available at retail, or for me to decide to get a prebuilt with one (I have a spare M.2 PCIe SSD I could put in one).
Yeah, pretty much the only affordable upgrade right now is the SSD/NVME if you get one on sale. RAM fluctuates wildly. Honestly, you might be better off getting a prebuilt, with the way prices are going.

CymTyr: However, I'm going to have to wait for scalpers and miners to stop their obsession with stockpiling GPU's until I can get one.
I feel like by the time you can just log on to NewEgg and buy a card casually there will be 3070 Supers or even 4070s.

CymTyr: Did some more investigations. There's no point in upgrading anything other than my GPU until another generation or two of processors comes out.

its all about the right combo of cpu and gpu plus other stuff. high end gfx plus high end cpu has the same results in gaming as high end gfx plus mid range cpu. as this benchmark shows (one example). athough it also depends on the games one wants to play, if you wanna rock in arma 3 then the cpu can't be high end enough. also it all deopends on the resolution and settings one wants to play a game.

I agree. At this point I feel somewhat lucky I even have a 5700 XT.

Good points. My mid range cpu is good enough for me, now that I'm no longer streaming and only casually recording YouTube vids. The GPU is more than enough for 1080p, I just want everything maxed all the time when really, I can get by with decent graphics in everything.

Right now I'm considering an interstate move within the next 5 years, so I have to consider that and start planning accordingly. Moving ain't cheap. :)

My requirement is lower: The game needs to be playable and run at full speed with some graphical settings. I'm willing to play on low settings , as long as doing so doesn't impede gameplay. It's when gameplay slows down or there's significant input lag that it becomes an issue.

Very doable requirements and in a normal economy, you'd be able to have your choice of cpu/gpu that would do the trick within your budget. It's a shame that there's a chip shortage in pretty much every industry which exacerbates the supply issue even further.

Hang in there, I hear by summer of '22 most supply chains will be back to normal.

You bet. For anyone running on old equipment that are on its last legs, should be doubling the frequency of dusting to keep those caps cool. I'm very sympathetic to anyone whose GPUs died in the 9 months.
Ryzen 5 5600G and Ryzen 7 5700G APUs will finally be available for DIY market on August 5th.

Great news for people who can't get their hands on a discrete card!
Bumping my own thread. I ended up getting a 5600X and I can definitely feel a difference over the 3600. I ended up reinstalling Windows, and my 5700 XT graphics card bumped up almost 100% in performance, so obviously there was something somewhere that was messing things up.

The 100% increase in performance was before upgrading to a 5600X.

The 6000 series ended up not coming out because AMD are doing refreshes on the 5800(x) by releasing a 5800X3D, and the GPU upgrades are not that much better than when I currently use, for the PSU I have.

I have a 700 watt PSU so I can either upgrade to a 3070 at the moment (non ti) or a 6750XT. The 3070 offers the hugest performance increase, but at ~$650 and up, it's not enough of an increase to justify the price when the 3070 still doesn't perform 4k very well in some cases, and is targeted at 1440p.

I think at this point, if someone wanted cheap 4k gaming, they'd be better off with an Xbox series x or a ps5 (yeah right good luck getting a ps5 here in the States) for $500 + Tax over the ~$850-1k for a 4k capable gpu.

I'm sure I missed something here like a 3070 using dlss to upscale to 4k, but I'm talking in terms of pure rendering power. Last I checked, retailers actually had series x in stock and had same day/next day shipping. Pretty tempting, even if you don't agree with console makers and some of their ideas for gaming. Just remember if you get a series x, set it to your home console so you don't have to deal with the internet going down and missing out on games. Their DRM literally revolves around that, for the most part.

Sorry for the necro - wait no I'm not, this is my thread and I'm not sorry - Also one last thing - where the 5600X was selling for ~$300 in most places last year when I started this thread, I got mine for ~$200 USD plus tax by being patient.

You might say cymster, why didn't you wait for AM5? I don't have hundreds of dollars for new RAM and a new motherboard ;)

Good luck out there, and remember to have fun.

Ryzen 6000 only for mobile, at least for now. Seems to be very good but much too few models for sale.

I wish I could buy the excellent R 5800X3D and upgrade but they sold out in the blink of an eye and the price is very high. I spent a whole €8 on Lotto with the aim to buy if I won. Of course I did not win.

Gamers should stay clear of the R 5500 as it has much less cache memory and is only a little bit cheaper than the R 5600 non-X.

Would be foolish of them to release both 6000 and 7000 series in the same year. Zen 4 should be out in September. In the meantime, Ryzen 5 5600G dropped in price below 180€, very tempting.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. I almost got the 5800X because I had the money for it, but in the end went for the 5600X because I don't do a ton of encoding, and because it's 65w vs 95w, and my cooler is ok but gets pushed around at times depending on what I'm doing.

I'm more impressed with how much performance I gained on the 5700 XT. People say nuking windows does the job, and boy are they right.
After almost a month, zero regrets with the 5600X.
