The DRM-Free Revolution Continues with Big Pre-Orders and Launch Day Releases!

Good news! GOG.com is going to bring you more fantastic launch day releases, preorders, and other exciting new content from some of our favorite developers. We've lined up 3 big titles that we will be bringing to GOG.com in the next couple of months for sale or preorder that we think will be hits with all of our gamers; and we have more equally exciting games coming up soon.

If you've been a member of the site for a long time, you may recall that when we launched sales of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com, we had to add in regional pricing. The game cost different amounts in in the US, the UK, the European Union, and Australia. We're doing something like that once again in order to bring you new titles from fantastic bigger studios. Since we don't accept currencies other than USD on GOG.com right now, we'll be charging the equivalent of the local price in USD for these titles. We wish that we could offer these games at flat prices everywhere in the world, but the decision on pricing is always in our partners' hands, and regional pricing is becoming the standard around the globe. We're doing this because we believe that there's no better way to accomplish our overall goals for DRM-Free gaming and GOG.com. We need more games, devs, and publishers on board to make DRM-Free gaming something that's standard for all of the gaming world!

That brings with it more good news, though! As mentioned, we have three games we're launching soon with regional pricing--two RPGs and a strategy game--and while we can't tell you what they are yet because breaking an NDA has more severe penalties than just getting a noogie, we're confident that you'll be as excited about these games as we are. For a limited time, we will be offering anyone who pre-orders or buys one of them a free game from a selection as a gift from GOG.com, just like we did for The Witcher 2.

If you have any questions, hit us up in the comments below and we'll be happy to answer (to the best of our ability).

EDIT: Since we've answered a lot of the common questions already here (and lest you think that we've ignored you), it may be handy for you to check out the forum thread about this and search for staff answers by clicking this link here. (hat tip to user Eli who reminded us that the feature even exists. :)

groze: Just wait and see.
Is that a motto of yours or something? Why is it important for you that instead of voicing their concerns, people just shut up and "wait and see", on a discussion forum of all places? Who would benefit from such noble stoicism – in addition to GOG and publishers who would see it as a sign of consent?

Gonchi: So will you be giving GOG credits to those that will have to pay more due to this?
avatar
TheEnigmaticT: Well, for these initial games we're talking about we have a plan to offer free games from a selected list. Beyond that, it's going to be on a case-by-case basis for a while I imagine. We certainly intend to try and offer something for every game that we sell we regional pricing. We know that 1 euro isn't 1 dollar, and we want to try to offset that.
I think it's important for others to see this. Int he past when GOG has had to do regional pricing (well in one case .. Witcher 2), they found some legal way around it (supplementary titles) to help make up the difference. GOG has always been against regional pricing, but if it's a legal issue, then there's not much they can do ... but they do what thy can to help offset it, and that should be appreciated. People should also notice that the regional pricing (even though I dislike it) only applies to the new release, major pre-orders. We see no talk now, and there has never been any talk before about adding regional pricing for anything else. have a little faith. GOG has a history of being one of the good guys. I think that counts for something.

JohnnyDollar: It is too much, but if you have any experience at all on forums, you'll learn that it's typical. I imagine you already know this, but I'm just pointing it out. Drama, FUD, and hyperbole are the norm here after news such as this, unfortunately, and using reason to try calm others down is futile. :/
Better to vent now that the staff is missing. When they return, the crowd will have calmed down a bit.

Drerhu: Seriously...I don´t understand how people could have problems with this, but not with steam abussive regional pricing =_= (imho)
avatar
Stoibs: Did you miss the part where I specifically said steam 'KEYS'.... you know us Aussies etc can buy steam activated games from GreenManGaming, GamersGate, CJS, GetGames, Nuuvem, Amazon etc. etc. right... -_-
Who said I didn't have a problem with Steams shitty price gouging either?
Well..GMG and Gamersgate still have region price, and I hate how steam keep locking games if you have purchased it from another guy.

Don´t get me wrong, I understand must be a pain in Australia :\ (I don´t know how much painful, but I can have a idea since I live in the Eurozone)

But I saw other people saying "Bye Gog, I keep buying on steam" something that doesn´t make sense for me x)
Has media picked up on this yet?. Might bring regional pricing issue in general to forefront.......

Our sanity would definitely benefit if you calmed your mammaries a bit.

[EDIT] calming down doesn't mean shutting up, by the way. Voice your concerns, but let me voice my motto as well.

GOG staff might be shocked at the reaction when they return to work on Monday (if their weekend colleagues havent passed on bits and pieces yet) LOL

roelibex: Lets just all not buy these 3 titles and see how that goes for those "AAA" games. Let them rot at the bottom of the Top sellers list. Let your voice be heard through the wallet.
Probably one of the sanest things that has been said since this was announced :)

Vel_Grozny: Regional pricing... Not cool, GOG. Unless you do something similar as you did with the Witcher2 (another game as a compensation for higher price).

GaminggUy45: This is what was posted on the front page. we will be offering anyone who pre-orders or buys one of them a free game from a selection as a gift from GOG.com, just like we did for The Witcher 2
Who says that I will like this selection? the only selection that would be good enough is a free choice of any game I choose from the catalogue with the same monetary value as the games pushed forward to choose from.
As quoted before: "Oy, That is *not* money"

Well I won't buy on steam, but DRM free is not something that can convince me to buy at premium. Most of the games I've bought here I bought to support the site because I loved the fact that everybody had the same deal offered. But now for example I just grab Syberia II from Groupees instead of here, because I don't care anymore.

Will they really? I still recall people accusing TET (while he was still online) of spewing shit. Perhaps they made the announcement on Friday to take a weekend break to psychologically prepare for the week.

Gearmos: Nice one.

GOG/Valve/Microsoft/Apple/Whatever sets a regional price based on the average VAT across Europe. The average is about 18%, and they increase prices at 35% (with 1$=1€ conversion). Fair price.
avatar
d2t: It has nothing to do with GOG, Valve, Microsoft of whoever - developer or publisher sets the price of their games and stores have to oblige. I've mentioned the VAT-thing because somebody earlier could not understand why the game would be more expensive in Europe than it is in the US. I'm not saying that charing 35% more is okay if the average tax is 20% + some conversion rate fluctuations.... at the same time, I'm saying that you simply cannot pretend like the 20%+ markup VAT does not exist for sales in the EU.
But, like I said, they have set up European headquarters in low VAT jurisdictions such as Cyprus or Luxembourg, which charges a 8-15% VAT. Not 20%. And 15% is far from 35%.

And I'm not pretending that VAT does not exist for sales in the EU since GOG Ltd is based in EU. VAT was included in GOG's prices since day one. ;-)
I think this thread has reached a good "concern" level..but since Gog won´t read anything until tomorrow, Imho to add more complaining but no ideas won´t be helpful anymore : \

And about people expecting to see regional price just now...seriously; Steam and Humble store switched this week, but Gog WON´T switch to regional price at the moment. Just three titles for the following months.

Ok, maybe this will be the beginning for a "region locked prices" in next releases-older releases, but until I don´t see that change in following months, I will stay supporting them.

One thing it´s true, if they have broke the flat price for three releases, they have broken that principle...but while other sellers are just selling that region priced crap for the entire weekend, we are in the same spot we were before the annoucement.

Wait please, we won´t lost anything for wait what will tell us this week, instead keep throwing logs to the campfire.

Excuse me, but wasn't it you who told us to avoid assuming anything? Now you're assuming that I'm thrashing all over the place. I suppose it's a safe bet to assume back that you're crying in a fetal position in the corner, praying god to end all this needless negativity on the internet.
