KingOfDust: As for what happened with the
The Twelve Kingdoms anime, I recall reading about financial troubles and the studio having to cut back on their initial vision. The anime adapts the content of the first 4 books, though it makes changes to most of them. Especially the first book. Some of the changes actually improve over the novels, while others are just awful and I can't believe they went ahead with them.
VeTrack: What about that new novel that was supposed to come out last year?
I read about the author working on a new novel in the series last year, but I don't remember seeing a release target anywhere. So, dunno. If it hasn't come out, it's probably still a work in progress. With any luck, this new novel will complete Taiki's story, which has been left hanging for years now.

MiKiL: I think that one reason too? for stopping has been "Because the character designer for the 12 Kingdoms series is currently having health problems, no more episodes of the series past the current 45 will be produced."
ANN (2004).
I did like the anime (watched it in our local anime society's monthly watch-list back then) without knowing the differences to LNs and did want to somehow get those Japanese versions even when my reading was totally bad.
The Twelve Kingdoms is actually one of my favorite anime. And perhaps the one I rewatched the most. Every time I did rewatch it, I learned to love some aspects of it more, and hate other aspects more as well. Especially after I read the novels (well, the official french translations anyway). Some of the changes they've made in the anime actually blatantly contradicts some of lore established in the later novels that didn't get adapted.
But that's not the worst. The worst is Asano. Quickly followed by Sugimoto. These characters simply shouldn't have been added. They feel completely out of place and poorly written. They're distracting. And in the case of Asano, completely useless. This idiot doesn't bring anything to the story. At all. Asano doesn't exist in the light novels, and Sugimoto is only mentioned at the very beginning to establish some of Youko's character flaws.
On the other hand, the anime also makes some big improvements for book 1. Can't really get into them without going into spoiler territory, but the light novels are far from flawless as well.
