I haven't been around, too busy. Anyway...

KingOfDust: I did try to purchase some of the volumes that were released in English, but Amazon cancelled my order due to being unable to get a hold on any copy.
That's unusual. What was shown for stock when you ordered it? "In Stock on XX date" or something like that?

I wonder how bad the overall sales were. Before Tokyopop, ADV already dropped it once and as you've mentioned, the French version was also dropped. I'm guessing those 2 weren't the only non-Japanese versions that are incomplete.

This reminds me, here's the trailer for the live-action Tokyo Ghoul.

Usually shows "Ships in 1 to 2 months" for these sorts of items. They don't seem to keep em in stock, instead they order them once in a while if there's demand. Probably. Just speculating here.

They did the same thing when I ordered the entire The Twelve Kingdoms anime on Blu-Ray. Except they only cancelled the order for the third part and only after about two years of leaving it open. So I got part 1 and 2, and I'm missing the final part of the anime.

Thanks Amazon.

Someone at animenewsnetwork has made a google drive spreadsheet of manga titles that are incomplete in NA.
ANN-link for thread . Just browsing it a bit, it's quite clear that Tokyopop took the biggest damage around 2008-2011. Restructuring, layoffs, declining sales, more layoffs, losing Kodansha licences.

I do remember when I found out that Tokyopop licenced 12 Kingdoms LNs, decided to wait more volumes appear and in the end, poof goes Tokyopop. Same thing with Kino's Journey LNs.. Not great..

MiKiL: Centaur's worries anime site has opened and finally shows some character design. :-)

WBGhiro: Monstergirls are my favourite anime trend right now, but for some reson the artstyle of this one made me avoid it. I can't really explain why.
I've been reading manga and character style is pretty good while comparing even from those few pics.
Manga is serious-side slice-of-life mostly centering everyday life main trio Himeno (Centaur), Kyoko (Satyr) and Nozomi (Imp).
I guess the world-building (some small amount of politics, race interaction etc.) is what fans like.

If someone wants to check it more, just saying that keep reading even after the odd and off-putting first chapter. X-)

Did you complain to their support? That's like ordering an apple and getting a rotten one with somebody taking a bite out of it 2 years later. (Don't ask how I came up with that analogy, my brain's almost dead right now)

MiKiL: 12 Kingdoms LNs
Come to think of it, I don't even know what happened to 12 Kingdoms. Pretty sure I can still recognize its anime OP but I don't remember where it stopped at and there was supposed to be a new novel last year but I didn't hear any news at all? If neither of you have mentioned it now, I wouldn't even think about it.

Ehh.... I like the anime, but I'm not really into live-action adaptations for anime in general... For anime I've watched anyway.

It's not really like that though. Technically I ordered 3 different items, and there's never any guarantee they'll manage to ship them to you. They don't charge you for an item until it gets shipped, so It's not like I had paid for it. It sucks but there wasn't much to do.

A few months after I ordered it, I checked if I could find it elsewhere. Only copies I could find were second-hand and went for over 300$, while the retail price when I ordered it was around 35$. Years later, you can still easily find the part 1 and 2 Blu-rays, but part 3 remains unavailable everywhere I looked.

As for what happened with the The Twelve Kingdoms anime, I recall reading about financial troubles and the studio having to cut back on their initial vision. The anime adapts the content of the first 4 books, though it makes changes to most of them. Especially the first book. Some of the changes actually improve over the novels, while others are just awful and I can't believe they went ahead with them.

Yeah, live-action can be very hit-and-miss. But there's something newsworthy about that Tokyo Ghoul's because of Fumika Shimizu.

What about that new novel that was supposed to come out last year?

I think that one reason too? for stopping has been "Because the character designer for the 12 Kingdoms series is currently having health problems, no more episodes of the series past the current 45 will be produced." ANN (2004).
I don't remember any good confirmations about this.

Edit too:
One reason that also supposedly was that at the time they didn't have enough material to continue.
Discussion of this at 12 Kingdoms Forum way back at 2003.

I did like the anime (watched it in our local anime society's monthly watch-list back then) without knowing the differences to LNs and did want to somehow get those Japanese versions even when my reading was totally bad.

Still no sign. Shinchosha apologized in the end of 2016 and told that Ono is writing but her illness is affecting.

I read about the author working on a new novel in the series last year, but I don't remember seeing a release target anywhere. So, dunno. If it hasn't come out, it's probably still a work in progress. With any luck, this new novel will complete Taiki's story, which has been left hanging for years now.

The Twelve Kingdoms is actually one of my favorite anime. And perhaps the one I rewatched the most. Every time I did rewatch it, I learned to love some aspects of it more, and hate other aspects more as well. Especially after I read the novels (well, the official french translations anyway). Some of the changes they've made in the anime actually blatantly contradicts some of lore established in the later novels that didn't get adapted.

But that's not the worst. The worst is Asano. Quickly followed by Sugimoto. These characters simply shouldn't have been added. They feel completely out of place and poorly written. They're distracting. And in the case of Asano, completely useless. This idiot doesn't bring anything to the story. At all. Asano doesn't exist in the light novels, and Sugimoto is only mentioned at the very beginning to establish some of Youko's character flaws.

On the other hand, the anime also makes some big improvements for book 1. Can't really get into them without going into spoiler territory, but the light novels are far from flawless as well.

Have you tried the VN? I found it to be a lot better than the anime.
Forgive me for sounding so ignorant, but could you explain what the VN is? I haven't seen or read it :-)

Short for Visual Novel, the game the Anime is based on. You can get it here:

https://www.jastusa.com/steinsgate.html or on steam (Requires a little fanpatch for better formatting)

As I said I liked the original VN more, including a lot of small changes and subplots, I simply think the scenes feel a lot more natural compared to the anime. It also has 6 different endings so there's something new even if you already saw both anime and movie.
