bought Alpha Centauri on the website, then downloaded the GOG client, then installed Alpha Centauri. When I try to run it, it states that "[it] needs the following feature: DirectPlay".
When I tell it to install it, it instantly tells me it was successfully installed, and that some apps that need to use it should be restarted.
When I close that window, another window pops up saying "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022)".
When I access the Control Panel page to turn Windows features on or off, Legacy Components and the Directplay subfolder inside it are checked, but when I press OK to close the window, whether I flash the check or not, yet another one pops up stating "Windows couldn't complete the requested changes. Unspecified error. Error code: 0x80004005".
I've tried running axstart.exe, terran.exe, and terranx.exe in compatability mode for Windows XP (service pack 2), as well as running them as administrator. Zero change in behavior.
Is there a way to prevent the requirement of DirectPlay, or another known solution to this issue? My googling from the past few days resulted in nothing of value, unfortunately. I just want to play a game I loved from my childhood ;_;
