bought Alpha Centauri on the website, then downloaded the GOG client, then installed Alpha Centauri. When I try to run it, it states that "[it] needs the following feature: DirectPlay".

When I tell it to install it, it instantly tells me it was successfully installed, and that some apps that need to use it should be restarted.

When I close that window, another window pops up saying "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022)".

When I access the Control Panel page to turn Windows features on or off, Legacy Components and the Directplay subfolder inside it are checked, but when I press OK to close the window, whether I flash the check or not, yet another one pops up stating "Windows couldn't complete the requested changes. Unspecified error. Error code: 0x80004005".

I've tried running axstart.exe, terran.exe, and terranx.exe in compatability mode for Windows XP (service pack 2), as well as running them as administrator. Zero change in behavior.

Is there a way to prevent the requirement of DirectPlay, or another known solution to this issue? My googling from the past few days resulted in nothing of value, unfortunately. I just want to play a game I loved from my childhood ;_;

Have you got Direct X 9.0c installed?

I've just installed on my Windows 11 laptop and it seems to work, although I did install legacy DirectX and Visual C++ redistributables ages ago.

I don't seem to, no, dxdiag is showing me having dx12 only. Currently looking into it now, will update later on how it goes.

There are also some unofficial patches you might want to take a look at https://www.gog.com/forum/sid_meier_s_alpha_centauri_/unofficial_patches/page1

If you have a game specific problem, it usually helps to look at the game specific forums first https://www.gog.com/forum

I've already attempted what that link's telling me to do, as I detailed in the 4th paragraph/line in the OP, so unfortunately that's a bust. Tried doing it a second time with Windows Defender off, but that also did nothing to change it.

I didn't recognize there were game-specific forums though, that's my bad, sorry!

Unfortunately, the installation of DX9 seems to be failing. After using the DirectX Web Installer, I got thrown the error(s) in the attached image, tl;dr got thrown error 0x80131700.

edit: nvm initially missed about the error code

Update: I followed the error code thrown by the dx installer, which pointed me at a .net issue. I went back into the Windows Features page, and realized that .NET Framework 3.5 was switched off. I checked it, but after trying to install it it threw another error, 0x80073712. Following this one points to a windows update issue, so I ran the windows update troubleshooter (which found nothing) then manually ran Windows Update...which threw another 0x80073712 after trying to install something.

I then admin-ran CMD, and put in "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth", which passed 100% and said the component store is repairable, then "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth", which... stopped at 84.9% and threw yet another error: 0x800f081f.

It then wrote "The source files could not be found. Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature."

I tried manually downloading what Windows Update was trying to download, which was a batch that fully downloaded but one security update that I wont put on here for obvious reasons. Tried /restorehealth again, failed at 84.9% again. Damn.

AC better be as good as I remember it being for the amount of trouble im going through to get it lmfao
That's weird. I've just installed it on my Win 11 and installation + startup went by without a hitch.

Did you happen to have these installed?
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170

Plausable this could be overlooked. Get x86 and x64 versions, as they coexist side by side.

If nothing else it adds them incase you need them. Also getting all the .Net and DirectX stuff can plug many holes too.

But you may consider the possibilty of malware in a low key manner disrupting what you are doing.

Try MalwareBytes or something not to drastic if you are passively curious of malware. Also, ClamWin.
https://portableapps.com/apps/security/clamwin_portable

Its even portable, but can be used on a static pc just fine.

Downloaded both the x64 and x86 links, and scanned with clamwin. It highlighted 8 infected files, all of which I got rid of.

After restarting my computer... absolutely nothing along the string of errors has changed. Unfortunately, nothing's been fixed. :c

Maybe a prelimenary scan with Clam. But Clam is a weaker AV. If it could find something, this may be a reason why you are having problems. Try MalwareBytes freebie. That is a little better. Will it fix everything? Probably not. Will it expose a a deeper problem? Im thinking yes.

Before you do, consider if you can backup anything you need, but a heads up. USB memory devices can transfer malware. Sorry if this makes you paranoid.
So I take it that the Windows Feature panel got rid of the "Legacy DirectPlay" option?

Hah, guess it's time for you to spin up BoxedWine or move over to greener pastures.

no, it's still there - and checked - it just seems to be lying to me about something, is all.

MalwareBytes highlighted and quarantined 8 additional things, but still changed nothing. At this point i might give the BoxedWine thing darvond mentioned a try.

Did you toggle the option in the ini file?

ini? which ini file? I thought you were just talking about the "Turn Windows Features On or Off" window.
