GR00T: There was a thread a while ago that brought this up (not sure if I can find it now), but the bottom line is they do have to comply: as soon as they opened a German storefront, they were bound by the German rules.
I disliked that decision from the start, but then again, I guess I was kind of arrogant for thinking that an English language store shouldn't pose a problem to most Germans. Would have been interesting to learn how well that panned out for them, if they've got a huge influx of new German customers after that which made it worth paying this price. I think there's been a lot of German (online) gaming news coverage for GOG since the change, which is good, but the German language forums aren't that more active than those for specific games, and they also seem a bit neglected with regard to news threads (my superficial impression is that not each and every news thread from the English site shows up on the German forums, too). But that doesn't tell us anything about the financial side - maybe the new German customers just buy games and don't hang out in the forums that much? The few German gamers I know in real life still prefer to shop elsewhere though, I think.

Also, since noone else seems to dare asking the horribly indiscrete, off-topic tabloid questions: Did you have to pay travel costs and lodging out of your own pocket or was (at least part of that) included in the invitation? Sorry, my curiosity got the better of me. XD

Klumpen0815: We had at least one dev here claiming, that regional pricing is the standard option on GOG, so I find this statement strange at best.
avatar
MarkoH01: Just to understand you correct. You mean a dev told that he was "forced" to regional pricing for his game?
Not forced but supposedly it was the standard (and therefore recommended?) option so he didn't think about it and just went with it. It's somewhere here on the boards.

Klumpen0815: What about the lost PMs?
avatar
MarkoH01: I asked you in chat before. What PMs do you mean? The ones that were lost after changing to the new account system with chat?
All the private messages that went poof when the chat was implemented.
I know you asked about it as a side-note outside of the Q&A sessions but that can't be all.

MarkoH01: I could imagine a possible reason for this not being officially announced. This should always be a feedback from community members to community members. A newspost from GOG would feel more like a marketing gag and not like impressions from (small) part of the community.
Perhaps you're right. I'm good with it as it is to be honest, but I don't think it would have sounded like a "marketing gag" if they wrote it in a direct and honest manner, and it needn't have been a newspost, but maybe a friendly forum post from fables at least.

You know, something to cut the cloak & dagger feel from it and appease conspiracy theorists :). It's the GOG forums after all and I can't help but thinking that a "GOG is recruiting forum members to spy on us" thread will show up in a couple of days at least :D.

I asked them about that and they said devs and publishers can choose which price model (flat-priced or regional pricing) they want (except for the classic games). But most of them want the exact same price than on Steam (and other stores).

We did get said info, but not sure if we can share it or not. Same with the expenses, though I think the expenses part should be OK to answer. But we'll have to double check before we say anything.

Both fables and elcook are currently out of office. Not sure if us posting this has anything to do with that or if it's just a coincidence ;)

We spoke about that, too. There was indeed a huge influx of new German customers after the German storefront was opened. Partly because many Germans want the games in their native language and partly because there was a lot of coverage from German gaming sites and magazines. Today Germany is one of GOG's most important markets.

I understand, thanks. And the second part of your reply sounds like half of an answer already. ;)

Well considering I didn't get to go and therefore didn't sign anything I suppose I could answer ;P

Nice to know a few of the people who did get to go and to know what went on.

I think many games were available in German already before the change though, weren't they? But the second part makes sense, and maybe the English language storefront put off some German customers then so they wouldn't even check whether a game had German language support. In any case, thanks for the reply!

So many people were asking for pics - well here are some of Warsaw and the CDPR/GOG building (the second sign with GOG on it is not on the main building - they are not working inside a barn ;)). Actually the building is quite big.

Interesting. Thanks for telling us about the stuff you are allowed to talk about :-)

They paid for everything.
What a cool move by Gog.
I hope that they'll listen to some advices from the community.. and that you guys suggested well! >:D

Btw, I wish I could have had the chance to meet some staff & goggers too.
A sudden trip to Poland is a bit difficult though..
Also, NDAs are scary lol.
