hedwards: Isn't that pretty much every year though? Granted, the 20th century and the rise of mass media made it possible for huge numbers of people to be familiar with a particular artist, but since that point, pretty much every year has a long list of celebrities that have a huge enough following to be missed.
Yeah, for sure, you pick all your favorite musicians that are at least 15 years older than you and short of a fluke, they'll byte the dust before you.
And of course, you'll have a lineup of artists that pass on each year (and people will give you a long list of examples).
For me, Bowie, George Michael, Leonard Cohen and Prince were huge. George Michael was definitely in my top 10 for favorite artists and the other 3 were somewhere in my top 25 (it's not nothing, I have over 500 different artists in my music collection, I love listening to music while I work).
And except for Leonard Cohen, they died before their time (and Cohen while very old was still musically active too). Again, it is such a personal thing, but because of those 4, it was a shitty year for me for music.
I don't know enough about their lives to mourn them personally, but losing that much talent (especially when you listen to their music at least on a weekly basis) is always painful on some level.
Klumpen0815: Last year was worse.
Not for me, but that's life.
Anyways, I've written enough about it. Life is for the living after all.
In a way, those artists were fortunate. Their music will live on and make a ripple in the lives of people for a long long time.
