Grondor1: Good points, squid830, though imo quests were written pretty nicely. But they focused too much on writing and removed all the fun exploration and survival of Conquistadors. But the worst part about Vikings was that trash loot. You arrive new town, spend ages looting every basket there is.
I guess it was in Steam forums, people asked DLC for Vikings, but they said they have already moved into the next project. Kinda shame, since Vikings has that huge map, you think it was made for future dlc in mind, like Ireland, Norway or Frisia, but whatever
Yeah that loot drove me nuts as I'm one of those autistically-inclined RPG players that, if they see something to loot, they must loot it, no matter how tedious it is. That, and there is the occasional piece of useful loot amongst all the crap, so I didn't want to miss anything.
I set myself a rule on subsequent playthroughs though, which helped my sanity: basically, I would only loot my home town, or places that would be realistically lootable (i.e. after I'd conquered a place, or defeated enemies in an area such as someone's house, etc., or if I'm pushing it then maybe also areas where there is no one else visible on the screen at the time). That also makes more sense to me, since it's bizarre that no one seems to mind you rooting through all their stuff - doubly so since there obviously some objects that are "off limits" (i.e. you can get caught "stealing" from there), but this isn't applied all that logically (though they apparently improved this in the latest set of patches).
On your second point, I agree in that the map seems more sparse than the ones in Conquistador (if one doesn't include all those campsites). But I also respect them for not milking it with DLC and moving on instead - I'm probably in the minority here, but I'd prefer a new game in the same setting rather than DLC (unless the DLC is a new campaign - which is effectively a new game, just reusing the same engine/lore/environment).
Oh and I didn't mean to say the quests weren't well done or well written - just that the writing seemed to have more impact in Conquistadors for some reason. There were some parts of that game that I still remember, such as that one racist crewmember who gets drunk and murders your "wife". I ended up killing him in a duel even though that reduced my crew by a further member.
I did like being able to get a nutty pagan priest to sacrifice his own son - but it's not as messed up as rescuing that half-Taino/half-Spanish chick from a sacrifice in the first act - she almost died and she gains the "traumatised" trait - and then in the second act, selling her as a sacrifice to the Incas... ;)
One thing I think Conquistadors also did better is how the dialog was matched to the character's personalities - despite there being much less "unique" character dialog as such. They kind of did this with Vikings, but IMO not as well, and sometimes it doesn't match up well. There were a few times when Gunnar came out with stuff that really didn't fit what I'd imagine him saying for example.
