I detected a gl.dll render in the game directory and i saw that on the environment.cfg file it was using the Direct3D8 render as default, so by curiosity i changed it to OpenGL started the game and bam! much better graphics, the game menu became a tad dark but in game it looks miles better then the D3D8 version. This is no surprise because back then OpenGL was much superior to D3D.

Only true if you are playing at 1680x1050 because in D3D8 it renders the game at 16 bits, if that is your case then on the environment.cfg change the render to OpenGL and the 16 on the resolution to 32, problem solved, it seams there's some differences between the D3D8 and the OGL render but i personally didn't felt like something was missing.

Neat tip. I'm very stupid with computers, could you elaborate on how to change it? I assume it's just a tweak on the .cfg file in Notepad, yes?
yes open the environment.cfg with notpad. :)
Thanks for that.

Penut:
Yeah just go to your games directory folder in programs (under the GoG folder), find the environment.cfg file right click it and open or open with. Choose notepad to open it. Right up top you'll see it says D3D8. Just erase that word/abbreviation and type in OpenGL save it. Now just boot up the game. He was right about it being a just a bit darker, mostly noticeable in the menu, but it's minor. I did notice things looked better.. smoother.

Hey, thanks a lot for the tip! I'm under the impression that it also makes the game run a lot smoother, at least in my case. Before, on my rig the game speed was alternating in some levels, occasionally slowing down for a few seconds before going back to normal, not exactly lagging but it felt like swimming through molasses ... All that seems gone with OpenGL. Great, now I can enjoy the game even more. :)

This thread should get stickied!
It looks better? Can you post any examples? Maybe screenshots?

^ This.

I'd really like to see some comparison screen shots if possible!
There should also be a render selector in the Enclave folder that allows toggling between Direct3D and OpenGL.

Direct3D looks much more vibrant for me, and there also appears to be differences in some of the rendered effects such as the skys. Snapped a few quick images:

Thank you for the screenshots Amran!

I'm skeptical. Everyone, tell me what you think. I created a comparison video and uploaded it to YouTube:

That looks to be about the same as the results I had. Everything becomes faded, and some of the additional lighting effects for the sky are missing in OpenGL mode.

It might be worth noting that the game was made with D3D in mind, OpenGL is actually labeled as 'unsupported' in the official documentation.

No Like on the vid?!?!? LOL Only joking..

Yeah, that's the result I came to (bland coloring) so I switched it back to D3D8.
That's strange, on you guys screen shoots and the video it does look like the Opengl version makes the game darker, but to me it did looked better i don't have the game installed anymore so i can't test right now but i remember clearly that the textures looked much better to me like they add anisotropic/trilinear filtering on Opengl but simple bilinear on D3D8, on OpenGL the lighting also add better contrast, darker was darker and light was more pronounced. On your shoots however i don't see nothing of that, i don't know, i'm a AMD user so maybe their GPU's render the OpenGL differently?

I will install the game again and test.

Installed the game and yes it looked mush worse in d3d8 to me but i found out why now, it looked worse because with d3d8 it is rendering the game to me at 16bits! My monitor main resolution is 1680x1050 and the game only supports that resolution at 16bits and i didn't saw that before, i then tried to change that on the environment.cfg but to no avail it stills renders at 16bits, then i changed the render to OpenGL and bang 32bits rendering at 1680x1050, looks much much better, need to test more but it seams this problem only seams to effect people playing at 16:10 resolutions.

Pic link doesn't work.

Ahhh, that would make a bit more sense. If you look in the description (or read the credits) of my video I put my system specs (vid, os, cpu, etc.) I ran at 1024 x 768.

Ah, I'm pretty sure there is a confirmed bug with this that was never fixed/solved. The highest resolution defaults to 16bits.

Sorry it works now.
Yes at that resolution it renders at 32bits but unfortunately my screen only supports well 16:10 resolutions and works best with 1050p, but i really didn't felt like something was missing with the OpenGL render it looks good to me so no problem. :)
