I was eyeing the game for years, and I have read that it is an absolute pain to run. People tried Win98 in a virtual machine, but I never mustered the patience to test it.

So finally, here it comes, and with the superior 3DFX graphics as well. It's true that the performance is far from optimal, but we should be happy we can play it at all...

What a chatty game, and those voice-overs, those are... not the best I have heard in a game.

But the story looks complicated and interesting enough.
Both Redguard and Battlespire were not considered great successes;probably they were trying to turn the Elder Scrolls into something more Diabloesque (after Diablo, which came out roughly the same time as Daggerfall, trounced it in sales) . There a reasons that Bethsads skipped over them when numbering Morrowwind.

Hey Kamamura, how are ya?
What do you mean by "far from optimal"? Performance is different from the original, you say?
Can you elaborate a little more? I remember playing this one back in the day and, judging from a video I saw just early, it's about the same deal.

Thanks!

Battlespire and Redguard were officially spin-offs, not parts of main series. Just like Crisis Core or Dissidia to Final Fantasy franchise.

Exactly, they didn't skip over Battlespire or Redguard in the main series numbering, because they were never intended to be main series entries.

The only thing I can figure is the game is being emulated in DOS and then the 3Dfx hardware is being emulated on top of that which is destroying the butter smooth framerate I used to enjoy on my top end 3Dfx gaming rig. It's an action game and the chop, especially in the cities and higher polygon landscape areas, ruins the swordplay IMO.

Nice tale to tell, LiqMat. Back in the day I wasn't so worried about specs as I am now, so this game in particular ran pretty smooth on our house computer. The thing is that, damn, this isn't unplayable at all, no sir. It's just that I have to, let's say, -double-admit that yes, the game is smoother and yes, it's incredible to play it in modern OSses (:P), current displays and so on. As for myself, I'm having lots of fun with Redguard. What an astonishing game for its time! *
My honest opinion? There'll be a fix that will "return" all the smoothness to this remarkable title or at least something like that. People will look it up on youtube and compare with the GOG version (much like I did) and see there's a noticeable downgrade in terms of performance.

See ya!

* yesterday there was a huge blackout at work, so internet was totally out. Since GOG and their amazing drm-free philosophy is so unique, I was able to play it for 3 hours, since my pc was the only one that didn't black out :P

Unfortunately, most of the Youtube videos I have run across have either the emulated Dosbox/nGlide version running or their screen capture software is seriously reducing their framerates as most software based recorders do. So watching this game on Youtube does no justice for it. The GOG version as it stands runs way better than what I have seen on Youtube. My point was and some others in these forums remember how this gem of an adventure title ran on a really good 3Dfx rig over 15 years ago. I wish NVidia had left native 3Dfx tech in their boards back when they bought out 3Dfx. I remember my jaw dropping and my eyes bulging out of my head when this came out. So impressive for the time and still a fun action adventure.

I pretty much don't buy games anymore unless they are DRM free. So that limits me to GOG, Desura and some of the Humble Bundles and to be honest... that's plenty.

What config are you currently using? I'm running Redguard on an 8GB laptop, with a mid range Nvidia gpu and I still experience occasional hiccups. The thing gets a little more slow-ish on open areas.
And I surely didn't know that some "youtubers" used software to, well, record using software that reduced framerates. That's why I love cam recordings, where you get to see the real deal.
Anyway, 3DFX was surely a thing for its time, with Requiem and Motorhead, for me, being two fine examples. So fluid, right?

And keep on Goggin', willya!? :)

16GB Toshiba Qosmio with a 670M. Works well with most GOG titles. Had an Alienware dual 780M SLI laptop about two years ago, but through some of my mad scientist experiments with overclocking and heat pad manipulation I blew up both 780M GPUs. Oh what a dark day that was. :-)

My setup is way more modest ;)

ps: wish I had a Toshiba Qosmio, didn't know them and they're incredible!

Toshiba discontinued the Qosmio. I have an older X875 model. So no more new models. I can't believe ASUS is releasing liquid cooled laptops now.

Impressive, nice tip. Thanks!
Unfortunately, in here, a water cooled laptop is for those who happen to be sons and daughters of monarchs or something, exclusive to the royal family :P
You know, rich :)

Oh, it's absolutely ridiculous and at that point one could spend way less money for an equivalent gaming desktop, but the absurd is amusing to look at.
