One of the great strengths of Morrowind is the incredible modding potential. Post the mods you like the most - essential, serious, silly, awesome or strange!

I'll update this list as recs come in and the post has space, prioritizing lists of mods and guides. There's too many great mods out there to list in 2 posts. #firstworldproblems

Essential / Vastly improves the Game

Graphics and Sound Overhaul, which merges 100s of graphics and sound mods into a coherent, easy to use installer.
Download from http://www.ornitocopter.net/v3-0-release/

If the original installer has a problem, some people think these guides help. Other people report they make the problems worse. YMMV.

Morrowind Patch Project: Latest version is 1.6.6 from http://www.theassimilationlab.com/forums/files/download/1060-previous-patches-unofficial-morrowind-patch Many guides will have links to outdated versions, but 1.6.6 is the latest.

Morrowind Crafting
Adds or expands hunting, sewing, mining, smithing, carpentry - if it involves crafting, Morrowind Crafting probably adds it. Used as a base mod for many other mods, which makes it important even if crafting is not your jam.
http://mw.modhistory.com/download-80-10477 - main mod
http://denina.fliggerty.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=161 - updated ESP with bugfixes (install after main mod)
http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/43439/ - Crafting texture replacer, since some of the items added by MW Crafting aren't included in other texture replacers.

Graphic Herbalism - http://mw.modhistory.com/download-1-5831
When you activate a plant, instead of opening like a container you will automatically try to harvest ingredients. Also the plant will change so you can see that it's been picked. This will save your sanity while gathering potions ingredients. Included in BTB's Herbalism for Purists from

Crafting and Graphics Herbalism compatibility fix http://mw.modhistory.com/download-80-3663
Graphic Herbalism is a mod that makes collecting plant ingredients more sane. This mod updates the Morrowind Crafting plants to have the same behavior.

Complete Replacements - Not In Morrowind
Arktwend
- Link: http://sureai.net/games/arktwend/
- Overview: "For an orphan, raised in the cloister of the small island-state Melee, it is now time to go its own way. But already after the one first night in freedom, everything takes its disastrous run."

Myar Aranath
- Link: http://sureai.net/games/myararanath/
- Overview: "Armies of Ahroma attacked Myar and exploited the country. But after the victory in the first war, parts of the country were freed and affiliated to the newly established realm of Fallas. But many regions are still left in the hands of the enemy. Recently rumors were coming up, saying that the Black Citadel of Narathzul was rebuilt, even bigger and more powerful than ever before."

Swords of The Perithia (SOP)
I just discovered the link below, but haven't used it myself.
Link: http://www.gamepressure.com/download.asp?ID=2756
SOP offers a new Main Quest and storyline. The entire game is set in a new Kingdom. 5 new cities (Balmora sized and bigger), with several new towns and camps. Over 80+ hours reported game time. New monsters with new skins. New weapons and armor. A whole new look and feel. Over 100 new side and misc. quests, not to mention a huge main quest. A much more puzzle based game, similar to the old "Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda".

mandatory sticky, since such list would have to appear sooner or later ;)
Gameplay Enhancements

Arrow De-nocker
This plugin allows you to de-nock your arrow. Needs Morrowind Script Extender. MSE is built into MGE, so if you are using the Morrowind Overhaul you need not worry. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-45-13221

FAIR MAGICKA REGEN
http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/39350/
Makes your mana bar refill slowly over time. (Normally in Morrowind, the only way to refill your mana is to drink a potion or sleep.)

Frostmoth Repaired
This mod repairs Fort Frostmoth as the Bloodmoon main quest progresses. Scaffolding and whatnot appear as the fort is rebuilt. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-65-10799

Galsiah's Character Development
Is not compatible with MADD Leveler. Leveling skills alter health, magicka, fatigue, and attributes directly. Removes the level up menu altogether. By design this mod favors pure warriors, thieves, and mages. Mixed classes suffer during GCD's use. http://mw.modhistory.com/download--6955

MADD Leveler
improves Morrowind's leveling system by making all the level up bonus abilities to x1 (rather than x5 regardless of skill point gains), and gives you an attribute point every time you raise three skills controlled by that attribute. Also contains numerous addons that remove the skill cap among other things. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-68-11157

Oblivion Style Vampires
Do all story quests, barter, stay at inns, and do everything you normally would, while being a vampire, similar to how vampires worked in Oblivion. http://morrowind.nexusmods.com/mods/42209#

Talrivian's State-Based HP Mod
Changes health formula to ( (Strength + Endurance) / 2 ) + ( ( Endurance / 10 ) x ( Level - 1 ) ). Fortify endurance potions are now useful, and increasing your endurance early on is no longer necessary. Do not use this with GCD! The mod is compatible with MADD Leveler. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-90-6521

TIRELESS RUNNING
http://www.fileplanet.com/195330/190000/fileinfo/The-Elder-Scrolls-3:-Morrowind---Tireless-Running-Mod
Running no longer drains your stamina bar. (Combat will still drain your stamina, like normal.)

NPC or Animal Behavior

Animated Morrowind
Adds some PCs with schedules and better animations, including musicians. http://arcimaestroantares.webs.com/animatedmorrowind.htm

Delayed Dark Brotherhood Attacks
No longer will a random prisoner be attacked by assassins in the dead of night. This mod delays the Dark Brotherhood's attacks on the player until either by being proclaimed Nerevarine or being made leader of a major guild or great house. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-90-7300

Hospitality Papers
Hospitality Papers were supposed to be required to engage in any services in Sadrith Mora, but it was not implemented into the game. This mod corrects that and makes them necessary. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-53-6206

Illy's Solstheim Rumor Fix
Normally everybody and their uncle knows about the island of Solstheim in Morrowind and every imperial has a son there. This mod gives only select people have knowledge of the island. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-21-13960

Less Generic NPCs
Aims to have each NPC in every town, village, or camp to have his or her own personality and back story. Releases are town by town. As with all crowd-sourced writing projects, YMMV.
http://lgnpc.org/ and http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-less-generic-npcs-project/downloads/lgnpc-bundle

Living Cities of Vvardenfell
Adds schedules to many NPCs. Old, possibly broken. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes3Mod:Living_Cities

Morrowind Comes Alive is an absolute must, it makes the place.. well more alive. More NPCs, NPCs with jobs, etc.
http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/6006/?

Children of Morrowind
Adds kids and kid-related items to Morrowind. Parents and grandparents also. Has multiple addons and new clothing. http://lovkullen.net/Emma/kids.htm

Nastier Camonna Tong
This mod gives the Camonna Tong more insulting greetings. Racial slurs and all are included in this mod. When you download this mod makes sure to change the name of the "sounds" file to "sound" before you drag it's contents into your Data Files folder, or you will get some errors. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-64-14233

Protective Guards
The guards in Morrowind will bravely defend you against a rat, but won't bat an eye at assasins. Now guards will defend you from attacking NPCs as long as you did not commit a crime first. Needs Morrowind Script Extender. MSE is built into MGE, so if you are using the Morrowind Overhaul you need not worry. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-8-11605

Random Passive Cliffracers
Few can deny that cliffracers are the most annoying creatures in Vvardenfell. This mod adds passive cliffracers to Morrowind's leveled lists, so not all of them are hostile. This lessens the frequency of their attacks without messing up their place in Morrowind's lore. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-26-11265

Shut Up!
This mod makes it so that NPCs will only greet you if you look at them. You can now walk through the streets without being constantly yelled at. Needs Morrowind Script Extender. MSE is built into MGE, so if you are using the Morrowind Overhaul you need not worry. http://mw.modhistory.com/download-15-6248

Here are three mods that I consider essential:

FAIR MAGICKA REGEN
http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/39350/
Makes your mana bar refill slowly over time. (Normally in Morrowind, the only way to refill your mana is to drink a potion or sleep.)

TIRELESS RUNNING
http://www.fileplanet.com/195330/190000/fileinfo/The-Elder-Scrolls-3:-Morrowind---Tireless-Running-Mod
Running no longer drains your stamina bar. (Combat will still drain your stamina, like normal.)

MORROWIND GRAPHICS EXTENDER (MGE) v. 3.8.2-rev.0178
http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/files/Beta%20Releases/MGE%203.8%2B%20SVN%20builds/
The MGE tool improves graphics, creates distant land, and increases resolution and field of view. Normally Morrowind has a very small view distance, with objects popping in out of the fog as you explore the world. This tool can generate distant land and objects (similar to Oblivion and Skyrim) which allows you to see all the way across the continent. It also makes some visual improvements to the graphics, and lets you increase the screen resolution and FOV. The tool has an almost overwhelming number of settings, but there is a handy wizard which automates the process and recommends default values for most settings. Unless you have a really good computer, you will probably want to scale things back a bit from the maximum values or your frame-rate may dip at times, especially when looking across great distances.

SourceForge, NexusMods, and most other websites list version 3.8.0 as the latest stable release, but I highly recommend using the 3.8.2 "beta" version I linked to above, because it includes an FOV setting that most of the earlier versions do not include. (In my opinion, the default FOV is too low for a modern 1920x1080 screen.)

I should also mention that when using this tool on my current machine, I've encountered a weird situation where the modified graphics only take effect if I launch the game from the actual .EXE file; if I launch from a desktop shortcut, the modifications are ignored somehow. I thought I should mention that in case anyone encounters that same issue.

------
I have not used the "Morrowind Overhaul" that some other posts are recommending. I think it includes the MGE tool, but I'm not sure what version. I don't know if it includes the other two mods I mentioned.
An important note is that the Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul introduces a number of annoying bugs if not carefully installed according to this (somewhat lengthy) guide.

http://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/43479/?

If you just rely on the base installer, you will create problems in your game.

Good to know. I've never had a problem with it, but I hope this helps anyone who does.

Some of the problems are nitpicky purist issues, but from what I've read it can introduce some game-breakers, depending on how people play through the game. Mainly it has to do with the overhaul using outdated versions of several of its included mods. Hopefully there will be a proper update in the near future, but for now, this guide does the trick, and is pretty easy to follow if you've got a little bit of free time to sit down and work through it. :)

Ah, the joys of extensive modding. Way back in the day when I was new to modding I managed to get a game where I had 6 of everything. Getting through doors in a hurry was a challenge. :)

MWGSO is a great way to easily install graphics mods for every aspect of the game, so it's definitely worth installing. I hope the developer can make a proper update one of these days - that someone else can, it's a mod after all - but I think the dev's busy releasing their second game.

EDIT: I've updated the OP with the official installation guide from the Bethesda forums and your link so people can choose. Modding, why you so complex sometimes. :/

Once you think you are "through" with Morrowind and its official expansions, you may wish to try its "total conversions" (mods which are separate games using the Morrowind engine). The bigger ones are about as complex as Morrowind's main quest.
My favourite ones are
- "Swords of The Perithia" (may not be easy to find today)
- "Arktwend" and "Myar Arannath" (from the same guys who created Nehrim for Oblivion, should be easy to find).

Could you please add in links and a description? I'm happy to compile a mod list but I don't have time to go searching all through the internet.

I'm going to update the OP with suggested mods sometime in the next few days and I'll add mods with a link and description.

Daggerfall

For Daggerfall, there are unofficial patches and add-ons such as the official CompUSA "limited edition" quest pack available at UESP:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Files

This page also has a few language translations, and save game editors if you should run into issues.

With Daggerfall, Bethesda added cheat codes in one patch to help you get around glitches that occurred with the randomly-generated dungeons, such as unreachable goals, or falling through the floor only to die in the void.

List of cheats: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Cheats

I'd say that the Imperial Library is also valuable enough ;)

On the other hand it isn't related to modding, so it's your call :)
Thank you guys so much, i've only ever played the original Xbox version and wouldn't know where to begin with fixing the pc version.
Wow, when creating my thread I didn't realize this thread existed. The only reason I saw it was that it has just been made a sticky. This proves that sticky threads do have a use! ;)

I have a question, can Morrowind Code Patch be used with Morrowind Patch Project?
