Let me just say, Eador: Genesis is awesome. There's no better word to describe it. I thought that AoW:SM is the best game of this genre then Eador: Genesis came out of nowhere and... just wow. Even more amazing is the number of people develop Eador: Genesis, i.e. not many.

Then come MotBW. My first thoughts were, "Well, it's still new and there will be bugs everywhere. I think I should wait for another 6 - 12 months." I don't know about you, I think that's a reasonable choice and I genuinely thought that many people would make the same choice.

But a quick read of this forum and Google shows that people actually bought the unfinished version of MotBW. Which brings me to my question, "Why do people bought the unfinished version of the game?"

Seriously, why do people bought it? Is this some sort of consumer culture I haven't been exposed to? Also, why do people care about multiplayer? Personally, I will not play multiplayer unless I can slap the other player physically.
That is the same question as "why do people preoder?". Some people preorder games, others don't. There are a couple of big and numerous small reasons why :)

Simple.. People are rich so they can afford to buy a bad game once in a while.
Some don't read russian and didn't know the game was still beta.

With the added fact that unless you followed the fan forums, or did the beta yourself, there was no real way to know that MotBW was a REMAKE of Genesis. I actually did quite a bit of looking both on their site and gogs and nowhere do they state it's just a remake or anything close to that.

If someone can prove me wrong please post the link. To be clear I do not mean anything in forums OR PLAYER reviews, as when your buying a game you don't always have those with a fresh release or especially with the Pre Ordering fiasco.

Well, I guess so.
I can hear EA laughing from here as they plan out their next games.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Small off topic:
Oh yes, the disaster with the latest sims/or simcity was such a disaster.. But im 100% sure people will buy next sims/simcity in a blink of the eye.. :D
I got the gae because the market wasn't overflowing with fantasy TBS games and I heard really good things about Genesis.
I knew that it was a remake, only with better graphics and as such that was perfect. Didn't know anything about the state of the beta.

While first impressions weren't that great it really wasn't a disaster people make to be, plus the devs are really tackling the issues fast. At this rate it will be on par with Genesis really soon and 20$ isn't that much compared to the AAA industry.

Having experienced the disaster that was Heroes of M&M VI this is nothing, that game is unplayable for most people to this day, most patches introduce more game breaking bugs than they solve. The speed and willpower of Ubisoft to fix problems makes Snowbird look like the best development team in the world.

That was my first thought. My second thought was: This is a small time developer making something that I really really love and almost nobody else deals in.
They need the funds and a show of interest, so I will gamble my 20$. Worst comes to worst I lost 20$ but if I am lucky they will be honest and finish the game

Because people didn't know it was unfinished. Dumb as hell question now isn't it ? Why would people buy an unfinished buggy game if they knew Oo
I think because MoTBW is the superior version? It has everything from genesis and also more variety of shards and events.

The reason to play Genesis instead is that MoTBW is in patch process. But that's a temporary thing.
With the campaign karma bug fixed I can't find any reason to play Genesis now.

After that it's 3d or not 3d? I don't think anyone can credibly claim that MoTBW graphics are ugly. MoTBW is the prettier game.

The downside is the same as with all 3d strategy games. They aren't suited to laptops with poor cooling and even on desktop you have to live with that video card fan noise.

I'll take the Genesis graphics over the new game's graphics every time. Why? Because Genesis takes 2 seconds to start up on my computer. If you're going to play for hours and hours, that's a much bigger benefit than "prettier" 3D.

Besides, the impact of graphics doesn't last. In five years the new game's graphics will be outdated and people will complain that it's ugly.

What about the slow animations and longer wait times between turns? Have those also been fixed/improved? I want to play, not wait.

I take your point. But I disagree with regard to this game. I think snowbird did a good job of recreating the 2d look only with the advantages of 3d (lighting & shadows). I don't think it'll age badly.

I agree that the game has performance issues. The loading one I'm not seeing, game loads no slower than genesis for me, but turn time yes.

Yes, the graphics are a real throwback to the 2D era, it's all how you approach design.

The biggest successes in this regard are for me the new King's Bounty games and Trine.
