comicbookgrunty: Did anyone else have a problem launching the Dungeon Siege 2 after installing the Broken World mod? After installing the mod all I get is a black screen when trying to launch the game.
avatar
MysterD: Did you install the Broken World registry files for your OS version?
Without them, it won't work.

If you skipped that skip - go do that step. You need it.
Thanks for the reply. I did run that bat file. It said 64 bit os on the top than gave a list of options. I chose option 1. It was the only bat file in the download. (I followed the directions in this steam guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1165078098). Is there another file that needs to be downloaded?

Option 1 in the registry batch is just for DSII.

You only need to copy the file to DSII's directory and run option 2. (Make sure to run it as administrator.)

Option 2 adds Broken World's needed registry details. Without that the game will not start.

Wrong. Option 1 is for Broken World to know DS2 is installed while option 2 is to run Broken World through Elys Succubus Manager.

I thought I made the descriptions clear enough so it wouldn't confuse anyone, guess I was wrong. The BAT is a bit outdated btw, I added logic to restart the script as admin without needing to right-click > Run as administrator.

You can get the latest version over there: https://github.com/GenesisFR/DungeonSiegeRegPatches

I'll gladly take any feedback to make it better.

Well Broken World didn't run for me until I ran option 2, and i'm not using Elys's Manager.

Edit:

I even re-installed it from GOG's version to test this when I first installed the game.

Choosing 1 did nothing. 2 Broken World worked with it.

Then put it on another PC (that has never had DSII installed and just tried option 2 and Broken World worked straight away.

(I then re-installed it on this PC and choosing 2 worked straight away.)

Weird, I just did 4 then 2, Broken World wouldn't run. Then I did 4 then 1 and it worked.

Did both twice with the same result. I'm using the Steam version btw.

Hi, downloading this Registry patch and choosing option 1 worked for me on 2 different computers. Thank You.

I'm going to put this out there because I don't know if its coincidence or not. The first computer I installed this and had trouble with the game loading, I also installed Nvidia Legacy PhysX driver for a different game. No idea if that helped the game to run or the newer Registry patch was enough.
THANKS!!! Will try

GOG should pull of a Diablo -> HELLFIRE stunt on those games, though. It is a real shame to sell incomplete packages and that directly conflicts with the "offer complete packages" policy of theirs.

This is more of a mess than the whole Diablo situation was.

Let me explain.

Square (the IP owner now) and/or GOG needs to get the rights to these expansions. There's a bunch of parties involved in this mess.

They (Square and GOG) would probably need to talk to the owners of the rights first and hammer out some kind of deal with $.

DS:LOA might be owned by 2K (who owns Mad Doc Software AKA Rockstar New England - which developed LOA) and/or Microsoft (who published LOA) at retail.

And 2K actually published DS2: Broken World at retail.

The only other party that might need to be talked to is Gas Powered Games, in which that is now owned by Wargaming. So, might also need to talk to Wargaming.

Chris Taylor (who once owned GPG) left WarGamming, so....dunno if he'd also need to be talked to also.

Thanks for the explanation!

But still, 2K is on GOG anyway... And since as you say, one of those products is already sold in retail, then it can also be sold digitally, even easier than in physical form; no?

I myself would like to finish up the collection and build myself a nice, LEGIT library. Paying a little extra is no problem, at least for me; i want COMPLETE COLLECTIONS!!!

Oh, I definitely get it - you want to own it legit entirely.

Luckily, I have all of this stuff from retail on disc - DS1: LOA Edition (with everything): DS2 base-game & DS2: Broken World expansion; and Space Siege.

Side note: I also own DS3 & Treasures DLC on Steam.

Sometimes, there are different rights for distribution involved in retail vs. digital. And even if different regions, too - there could be different distribution rights.

For example - Some games and/or publishers still might have to use a big publisher or distirbutor to just get in at retail (b/c they don't have the big money $ and/or clout or reputation to get in w/ retailers - i.e. see Square Enix and Deep Silver trying to get original Dead Island into retailers), but could maybe just use their usual publisher and/or self-publish possibly on Steam or other digital channels if need be.

Another example - Sacred 2: Ice & Blood expansion was not released in USA b/c CDV held the rights to all expansions for anything Sacred 2 in USA. Though, in UK - Deep Silver had the rights to everything Sacred 2 and later bought the IP out. So, to get USA rights, Deep Silver went through the whole process and got a deal hammered out with CDV so then they just straight-up released Sacred 2: Gold to the USA (with the expansion). Of course, now - well, looks like a trade was recently made and THQ Nordic will be using the Sacred IP for new Sacred games (since Deep Silver wasn't doing anything with it, after Sacred 3 tanked).

Anyways, all these companies need to talk to Square: GOG, 2K, Mad Doc Software, Wargaming, and Microsoft (if Microsoft are still involved). All probably need to be talked to, to figure out who owns what rights, or if Square wants to purchase all rights out right, or whatever....for both Dungeon Siege 1: LOA and DS2: Broken World.

These things can get complicated - I mean, the whole No One Lives Forever is still up in the air, b/c so many different companies might own pieces of the rights and actual game. It's a mess.

You are right. Too much complicated. My head is spinning already, ouch!!!

A real shame, though. Many wasted opportunities and games becoming abandonware pointlessly, where and when many people would gladly buy.

It's all money.

Companies might own rights for a certain game or the IP - whether it's a soundtrack, name of the game, characters, story, the entire IP itself, where to publish the IP at retail, where to publish digital, or whatever.

Licenses can be an issue too, as those often only run for so long...then the developer and publisher had to pay to keep the game in print, re-release it, and/or keep it on digital stores like GOG and Steam.

Some games - like games w/ licensed soundtracks of music - you'll never see again, unless the music gets pulled from the game; i.e. go see Mafia 1, which pulled the music when it wound up re-released on GOG and Steam.

Sports games are probably an issue too - as they have to pay for licenses for the players association and the leagues. They often use licensed music in those, too - so then there's another issue, that can crop up later. Doubt we'll ever see the old Madden games re-released b/c of this.

Racing games, too - as then there's licenses that need to be paid for with having certain car brands and whatnot. I would love to see Need for Speed Underground series return....but, b/t the music and car licenses, probably won't see that return.

Moral of the story: if you have the $ and are interested in certain games, try to buy games while you can; especially games w/ licenses, which are often a limited-time thing...especially if it ain't worth the $ for the company to re-release them, since they're going to run things like a business.

Is that for real? Thanks a ton, buddy! I was considering to buy the Mafia series, too. But i hate shady practices like those, whether they are legal or not.

As for the moral... Damn, it directly conflicts with my modus operandi, both as a collector and as a gamer. I buy games many year after release and get down to beat them, after everything has been found out, inside them. Imagine that only now i started playing THE, Dooms! Will try to, though.
Hi, I've got a dumb question: If I already started the DS1 vanilla GOG version campaign and install the mod now... will I be able to use old save games? I don't want to go through the 2 hour intro again :-D
The game is on sale. Loved it back in the day, might buy it.

But just so I understand, the whole expension is released as a MOD to the game? Or do I need to buy somewhere the expension, and the mod is to make it compatible with GOG/Steam?
