Convert the OGG files in the DK directory to WAV (use any tool you like, I'm using Foobar2000), then open GAME.INST in a texteditor and replace all instances of
.ogg" MP3
with
.wav" WAVE

Save as DUNGKEEP.CUE ... you should now be able to use the CUE sheet in most CD emulators, or (if the emulator doesn't understand BIN/CUE) applications that let you compile a cuesheet to an ISO.
As this thread goes on, it sounds like the mod is more and more complicated to setup properly...

Anybody talked to support about possible inclusion?
About the music: you need to put your Dungeon Keeper CD in your the drive OR mount a .iso image (using stuff like Daemon tools), just be use the drive is the first one if you have multiple cd\dvd drives (eg. if you have a E: drive and a K: one, use E: )

this is true both for KeeperFX and the original win95 game

edit: hansschmucker solution is pretty awesome too

So.. I unzipped the dk95.exe archive into my install folder, and when I try to run either keepd3d.exe or keep95.exe, I get the image of the disc loading screen with a question mark. I thought I updated my install path in the keeper.cfg file, but I guess I didn't do it right..?

OP, can you clearly define "correct path" for the CFG file? These instructions are a bit sparse..

My screenshot is way darker than it should be. It's the swirling red disc loading screen you get at the start, with a question mark on top.

I was playing with the CD inside my drive, I think this can be a CD copy protection.
Try keeperFX instead :)

I don't have a CD, I bought the game on GoG. I haven't touched Keeper FX yet, I'm still trying to get the D3D/Win95 patch you provided at the top of the page working.
Ok, so I figured out how to do the correct install path, though I still haven't dealt with Keeper FX.

1 - Downloaded and installed Daemon Tools to create a virtual drive.
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/products/dtLite

2 - Mounted GAME.GOG in my virtual drive. It was located in my base install folder for Dungeon Keeper. I had to specify 'all file types' when I was directing Daemon Tools to mount the image.

3 - Edited Keeper.cfg in Notepad, specifying INSTALL_PATH=E:\KEEPER
The actual drive letter could be different for other users.

Where I dicked up was that I had my install path pointing to the game folder on my C:\ drive, and I had it in quotes to account for spaces.

Now to work on Keeper FX..

Keeper FX is not really a mod, it is basically a clone of the original game (you don't need the original to play it) of somewhat dubious legality. It has some fan "improvements" but it was really a way to make the game available when it was hard to find. It's the DOS version adjusted to run on a modern system, Really no reason for GOG to offer it, and GOG would not want to piss off EA by including what amounts to a pirate version of the game.
It;s easy to install, the hard part and what is under discussion here is a way to convert it to the Hi Res Win 95 version . So we are talking about a mod to a mod, really.

Tried changing the cfg path, and still get the "Not a Valid Windows Application "when I try to start it.
Screw it until somebody gives a detailed explanation of how to get KeeperFX to run in the Hi Res Windows 96 mode that actually works.
Sorry for the misunderstanding:
KeeperFX doesn't need anything to run, and you CAN'T make it run with the windows 95 files, as you would override KeeperFX own exe.

The win95 and d3d files are for the GOG version, that's the dos one. If somebody wants to convert it to the direct3d one now he can, simple as that.

KeeperFX and the win95\d3d version of the game are two separate things that cannot coexist, you just choose one or another.

How I play the game:

- I've installed KeeperFX
- I've an .iso of the Dungeon Keeper CD mounted on a Daemon Tools virtual drive (it's needed only if you want the game soundtrack)
- I've modified KeeperFX's cfg file to run the game at my favorite resolution
- I've no GOG version or other versions of the game installed, just KeeperFX

I'm also owner of an original Dungeon Keeper Gold CD, I'm not a pirate, if you don't own the game, buy it on GOG even if you plan to use KeeperFX. You can have both Gog version of the game and KeeperFX installed (in different directories of course) if you want to check what is best for you.

The win95\d3d files I've provided are for the GOG version, once copied you NEED to run them instead of the dosbox launcher, those are the original game files, so they probably are copy protected, something you need to fix in a way or another on your own (one way is to mount an iso of the game CD, another way is provided here http://www.bumcheekcity.com/pages/82-dungeon-keeper )

hope it helps!

im having trouble getting this to work as well.. Now im really confused, do you need the win3d files or not?

I own this game already, My disk is scratched and wont install anymore.. Been waiting years to find it again.

The onlything thats bugging me is the mouse moves so fast, and cant zoom out. higher resolution might help both these but im at a loss right now..

i just reinstalled in another directory the DOs version just to play till i figure it out.
For all of you, the procedure for correct installation of KeeperFX:
1) Install GOG version (anywhere, let's assume C:\Games\Dungeon Keeper)
2) Extract the KeeperFX archive (in my case I downloaded keeperfx_ccp_0_40_complete.7z) into a different folder (let's assume C:\Games\KeeperFX)
3) Mount file GAME.GOG located in C:\Games\Dungeon Keeper as an CD (e.g. using DAEMON Tools Lite as myself) (let's assume your virtual CD has a letter D)
4) Locate file keeperfx.cfg in the C:\Games\KeeperFX and edit the second line to INSTALL_PATH=D:\Keeper)
5) If you want higher resolution edit also:
INGAME_RES=640x480x32 1024x768x32 (in my case I wanted to have 1024x768x32 available in the game but you can insert any resolution you want)
Note: when in game press ALT+R to switch between resolutions (in my case between 640x480 and 1204x768)
6) Start keeperfx.exe

Please note that at least for me the mouse was a bit laggy in higher resolutions

What I was not successful in is how to make music work. If anyone would suggest any solution. So far I have created another image containing both music files in wav and the game data from GOG.GAME. However when burnt as Data CD the game does not recognize the music files. I may need to name them correctly, or? (of course this is not a problem when having image of the original CD)

For music to work, you need to mount your CD image as the first letter, or at least the first letter available, before your actual CD/DVD drive(s) in alphabetical order. I've a French computer (Windows Seven) so I'm not sure about names but: right click on Computer, then "manage" (the option which needs Admin rights), "storage", "disc managing (?)", then right click on a virtual drive and change the letter. A: is often best ^^

Otherwise this type of music format won't be recognized. It should work - provided the .gog file has music in "redbook" format (one track for data, others for soundtracks). However I don't think creating a new CD with wave tracks could work with this method. An original CD should work indeed, but if not it need to be copied as a .cue/.bin image type and mounted as explained before.
I got the gold edition of Dungeon Keeper as well, and did get it working with KeeperFX.

But it also reminded me about why I did not play the game through, at least not the Deeper Dungeons. Too much baby sitting your minions with really annoying controls. I think most things works much better in DK2. With some tweaking I have got it working at 1920x1080, running it with a unlimited zoom exe file. The only problem I remember having with DK2 was how the sound was glitching, and that seems to work very well in this game. I have only had one random crash, and that was before running the game with 32bit and nogamma settings, and changing graphics type from 4 to 2.

hansschmucker: Convert the OGG files in the DK directory to WAV (use any tool you like, I'm using Foobar2000), then open GAME.INST in a texteditor and replace all instances of

.wav" WAVE

Save as DUNGKEEP.CUE ... you should now be able to use the CUE sheet in most CD emulators, or (if the emulator doesn't understand BIN/CUE) applications that let you compile a cuesheet to an ISO.
Well okay, there was no 'GAME.INST' that I could find in the KeeperFX v0.4 folder. So I copied the one from the installed GOG ver. of Dungeon Keeper and pasted it into KeeperFX's folder.

Then I did the editing according to your instructions. Then I renamed it to, as you said, 'DUNGKEEP.CUE'.

Well my Daemon Tools Lite usually understands .BIN & .CUE images just fine...except in this case when there's no .BIN file to go with the .CUE.

So then you say something like use an application that lets one "compile a cuesheet to an ISO". Well I have CDburnerXP. I was just going to try to create an .ISO, but I didn't know what files to put into it, exactly, or what to name the damn thing.

So how is this done, eh? I've been working and tweaking this KeeperFX v0.4 ALL DAY and INTO THE NIGHT up to now. I'd really love to play this via KeeperFX for (I think?) the hi-rez, but I will NOT play it without the stock-soundtrack that I can play with it no problemo with the GOG ver.

Could someone tell how this is done completely and specifically? Guesswork sucks ass! I don't want to dick around with this much longer, see. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, with all this confusion, I almost forgot to ask about how to clear/reset the High Score List? All this tweakin' and runnin' and tweakin' and runnin' has mucked-up my High Score List. So how? ???
