Doom 3 vanilla has better mods available that are of higher polish than the slight graphical update in the BFG version.
I would love to see GOG over the stripped down basic vanilla version, but that is probably unlikely.

There were mods released for BFG that improved that, however this BFG has absolutely no MP.

Vanilla doom 3 had LAN, ID released BFG with full steam integration and removed LAN support.

What we have delivered here is Doom 3 BFG without LAN play re-enabled so quite honestly they should have knocked at least 30% extra off the current sale price as they are delivering what is essentially an overpriced cut down version of doom 3 bfg.

For a game like Doom cutting out the MP entirely which is what they have done here radially reduces the value

Wow even shitter a deal than first apparent. *tips hat to you*
LAN and direct ip is not enabled/hidden, not missing, but since is not supported by Galaxy and lacks official servers it's not mentioned on store page.
I'm honestly disappointed that we don't get both in the same package. Other games have done it here, for example Spelunky and the X-Wing games.

I couldn't care less about the multiplayer aspect, but I am annoyed by the fact that only the BFG Edition is included, because I much prefer the original. There's too much ammo, it's too bright, it's not compatible with a lot of mods including a personal one I use to port the DB Shotgun into base Doom 3, and it has a shoulder mounted flashlight instead of the original swappable one, destroying all tension as you ruin the lighting in all the areas rather than relying on natural lighting and enemy fireballs to locate them and fire. It's a stripped down version designed purely for people who sucked at the base game, I feel.
I don't care about DOOM3's multiplayer. My whole issue with the BFG Edition is that the light limitations are the thing that make the game stand out as an experience. I would also love to explore the modding community, and frankly I think I would rather be playing games with that design aesthetic in mind. It shows a lot of creativity, and it is just a shame it wasn't as well received as some other games like Halo and COD. DOOM3 > COD any day.

These are really the big reasons to get Vanilla over BFG. Steam still sells the original, so i was surprised GOG ended up with the BFG version. BFG also narrows the FOV pretty badly. The only other major difference is BFG only supports 5.1 whereas Vanilla had 5.1 and EAX 4, but honestly Vanilla's EAX implementation was god awful so no loss there.

So I played this game now for a while, and I actually rather like it.

What I read about it being too bright, I honestly expected it to be much worse. It looked just fine to my eyes, maybe they changed the brightness again in this release?

There was some micro stuttering, but turning off the GOG overlay fixed that.

I had some tearing, but enabling v-sync in the driver, and not the game, fixed that.

There is a FOV slider as well and I like the easier difficulty.

I still believe the Vanilla version should be included, maybe GOG will come through, but all in all I'm quite happy with the release :D

Has the game crashed at all with Galaxy installed for you? The game has crashed on me a couple of times just by having it installed on my machine (mentioned here) and the only way I was able to get the game to stop that was either removing GOG Galaxy entirely or use the RBDoom3BFG source port which means no playtime or achievement tracking on my GOG account. I remember seeing microstutters in the original Doom 3 on my machine and MSAA was very taxing for such an old game for some reason for me, especially when lots of smoke and lighting/shadows were being cast, but with BFG Edition I didn't have any microstutter as far as I can tell, even with in-game standard V-sync enabled, and MSAA not being as demanding in BFG Edition over the original.

I noticed the game was much brighter visually compared to the original in terms of atmosphere, but with a console command "set r_lightscale 1", I was able to get the game closer to the original Doom 3 in the atmosphere and darkness, though I noticed one cvar called "in_toggleRun" didn't work whether I enabled it or not and I believe it's supposed to let you toggle if you want to run by pushing the button once instead of holding the Sprint button down. I hope the GOG stuff is listening to the issues some of people like have are reporting with this release, especially the broken Galaxy support in my case, and possibly giving us the original Doom 3 as a bonus, I don't why they are not doing this anymore lately. Games like Rune Classic on GOG got to have its original version as a bonus download for those that want the original over the updated re-release and same for System Shock and other older games.
It hasn't crashed yet, but I've only played 56 minutes so far!

Here are some screenshots attached.

You should also give RBdoom 3 BFG source port a try:

https://github.com/RobertBeckebans/RBDOOM-3-BFG

I think you can use the texture mods with this. Also has some other added features

Another way to get the wulfen textures to work with BFG is to use the Doom 3 BFG mod launcher and download the mods from here:

I have tried this launcher before and sadly it seems to be very out of date since it doesn't work with the latest stable build of RBDoom3BFG and ships with an outdated version. Is there any way we can get in touch with the dev of this fan-made launcher to get it working with the latest versions of RBDoom3BFG because that forum thread hasn't seen any post for some time?

Just tried the mod lancher again and it still works with the latest preview build of RBDoom3BFG.
I'll post what I did to make it work with the latest RBDoom3 tomorrow it's a bit late now.

Is there a way for this workaround of yours to work with the latest stable build, though? I tried to use the preview build and the HDR lighting looks very off and a performance killer, and I tried to disable it but it ruins the colors and lighting of the game.
